I use FL studio for drums and I think Ive reached a point where I cant go beyond typical patterns and fills.

Im looking for some fresh creative ideas for drum fills... Im open to anything...so if ya got any, Id love to read. :)

The best way to make new drum fills is to play with new rhythms. Create something interesting with just the bass and snare, and then extend that to the toms and cymbals.

Try mixing note values, such as 8th note triplets or 16th note triplets in with normal 16th note patterns. Also if you're doing a fill of straight 16th notes try orchestrating in a pattern of 6. This can create a nice poly-metric effect.

Im also using programmed drum and when I want new ideas, I listen to band with awesome drummer and focus all my attention on the drum patterns and fill. Maybe it would work for you as it work for me.

What alexaons said. I use a drum machine too, and I have a few fills memorized for different patterns. A lot of the time, there's something about each fill that doesn't sound right when I use it, and I have to tweak it a bit or come up with a variation on it. That usually ends up with some good stuff.

Another interesting thing to play around is where you start your fills in a measure. Trying taking the patterns you're sick of, and displace them by a 16th note. You'll notice that this gives them a totally different feel compared to the original pattern.

You could try mixing in and out triplets too.

Talk to a drummer! They know how to do it best, and as a non-drummer who has programmed drums, I don't know nearly as I could about how to make it work, and I learned what I know from talking to drummers and listening to the drums in hundreds of albums to consider how the composition works.

A fun fill is always to do two drums/cymbals no matter what they are, then kick, then change, then kick. Example:

Snare/Floor Tom, Kick, Tom/Crash, Kick

Also, doing a tom twice as if it was a triplet, but instead of a third tom hit, use a kick makes a really cool sound.

I just play through the song in my head whilst doing air-drums and when it comes to the part something usually just comes out.

kinda primitive, but effective for me.

Practice something called linear fills.

Generally in groups of eight notes, they're played in such a way in that no two limbs are hitting something at the same time and generally have mixtures of whatever you want. Really cool stuff when you get really involved in it and start doing all sorts of different combinations it gets really cool.

There's a channel on Youtube, I think it's called mikeslessons, that breaks down linear drumming pretty well.

Thanks for all the useful inputs everyone!
Yardstick / xeroxifcation and mattps ideas were especially fun and interesting. I have made a note of it and look forward to trying it out soon. :D

As for getting tips from real drummers at least on youtube, I realise how much that would help.

But let the ideas keep coming. :)

I also have a noob question on using rides in fills. How much can they be randomized? or is it that they need to follow a 'uniform' pattern, like 8th / 16th notes etc?

You shouldn't really randomize anything. I like to use the ride cymbal though, just pretend its a tom and do a set of 16th notes across it.

Another good fill I found is hitting any cymbal, then any drum, then kick, or vice versa. You can really be creative and it also accents triplet rhythms very well.
