I'm not 100% sure which I should buy. So try to convince me which I should start - playing guitar or Bass. And what kind of good (but cheap) guitar you recommend to me.

Good first guitar would be Yamaha Pacifica (even the 012 is solid).

Good first bass would be Ibanez GSR200.

Bass is easier to learn but I suggest learning guitar first, then when you get to bass it'll be even easier and you'll have better chops. That's what it was like for me anyway.

Bass. There are already too many guitarists, we don't need new ones.

Not to mention, bassists are the best composers, make the best blunts/joints and have the best weed, and have the most fun!
I personally love bass, I swore an oath to my baby!

I would recommend and Ibanez SR300XD [such as I have], great bass, great look, great tone, everything!

There's no reason you can't play both! If I were you though, I'd go for the guitar, if you HAD to pick one. I've been playing for a little more than three years, and that's not slowing down anytime soon. It's great fun.

Well guys, he didn't ask about drums, he asked about bass and guitar.

I'm a bassist, so it comes natural to say you should play the bass. But, if at all possible, learn the guitar too. It's really cool to know them both - makes joining a band much easier.

I would recommend to try to learn play guitar first, then you have an base already, then try out the bass guitar.

(OFF: guitar is cooler :P)

If you plan on joining/forming a band than bass would be the way to go (if not drums).

I can make it more possible to join band with guitar. One of my friends is playing guitar and another one is playing bass (training band is not formed yet).

I personally play the bass...and it wasn't easy for me to play the bass after learning the guitar, because I play only with fingers, so the technigue is different....
I would go for the bass..=)

Bass, hands down. The world needs better bassists, ones that don't suck to.
I mean think about it, if Alex Webster sucked at bass, Cannibal Corpse wouldn't exist and/or be nearly as good as they are.

True. I think your statement would be stronger if you were to say the world needs more versatile bassists.

Just ask yourself wether you want to be in a leading (guitar) or accompanying (bass) role. It's also easier to be a mediocre bassist than a mediocre guitarist, but it's harder to be a great bassist than a great guitarist.

Haha, that's probably the lamest thing I've ever heard. Why would you try to be a mediocre guitar/bassist?

Because most are before they are great :)
It's just about how fast you want to get into the 'real stuff'

drums drums drums drums......this world is need for drummers not for more guitarist :)
but really man there is a huge deference between guitar and drums..maybe you should ask your self what to play,it's up to your taste.
BTW,being a drummer will assure that you will be asked to play in many local bands

I always say Bass, as there is usually a huge demand for bassists.

I say try out all 3, and see which one you like the best. I don't think anyone on this board can make the decision for you, in the end its up to you.

I'm surprised no one has asked this question:

Are you looking to join a band, play an instrument for your own amusement, or are you trying to become a full blown musician who writes his own songs?

If you're trying to join a band, I agree that picking up bass, drums or even practicing vocals will allow you to have an easier time finding other people to play with. There's always a glut of guitarists.

If you're just playing for your own amusement, just choose whichever instrument you like most. However, playing drums quietly is quite lame so if noise is a problem, you'll probably want to try guitar or bass. Also, I find it more "fun" to just learn a song on guitar and play it by myself than to play the drums from a song by myself.

If you want to write music, guitar is definitely the most versatile as you can write the basslines as well as the chords and leads all on one instrument. Plus, learning bass after you've already mastered guitar isn't incredibly difficult.

That would be too expensive.

I'm going to form band with my guitarist friend.

If it's just going to be the two of you, at least at first, drums would probably be the best choice. It might be worthwhile to buy a bass as well so that you can help to write the riffs with your friend. Plus, that way maybe you'll find a third person who could play bass, and they wouldn't need to have their own bass.

Drums are pretty fun if you don't live in an appartment or close to someone else who doesn't like real music.
