Wow! What a great guitar tone this album has! Does anyone know what amps, heads, pedals, etc were used when recording it? I wanna try and get something that sounds the same.

I think KK used a Crate Blue Voodoo, and Glen used a Marshall JCM 800.

Was the Blue Voodoo series out back then?

I've heard it was a Digitech rack thing, but I'm not entirely sure. It sounds a lot like the tone I get with my Marshall JMP-1 and VHT 2/90/2, so I'd expect a modded Marshall JCM800 with KT88 tubes would get close, and a boost would get closer..

Yeah, Marty Friedman was using them in Cacophony.

You'll definitely need a treble booster to get that terrifying screeeeeeeeeeeeeeaming sound on the high notes.

I know they used EMG 81's for the bridge pickup and Gibson 57's for the neck, if that helps.

Where'd you hear that? I used to look for this kind of information a lot a year or so ago, but I never found any information except pretty vague info.

i've always wondered the same thing. although i have noticed something, painkiller has an almost identical guitar tone to stained class, just with much more distortion of course. although painkiller never sounded much like marshall amps to me, i'm starting to think they were just using jcm800's with ALOT of treble, which would explain why it doesn't have the normal dark tone of the jcm800. i'm pretty sure they used marshall master volumes with mxr distortion pedals in the late 70's, maybe they did the same thing for painkiller. i have an 81 mxr distortion + which i use with a fender amp, and it gets me a tone that's pretty damn close. if i use the mxr into a clean tube amp i get a tone identical to brittish steel

Painkiller has one of the best guitar tones ever!

the guitar is freaking awesome the only thing that makes the song kind of a turn off is the way that gay guy sounds when he sings. he's much better in my opinion for vocals in "breaking the law" and "you've got another thing coming"

You're faggotry and offtopicness astounds me.

The guy just needs a lot of tube distortion and screaming treble boost.

Painkiller's tone does not sound all that warm and tube-y in my opinion. In fact I think it is rather synthetic.

Thanks for the help everyone. So far I've gotten about 70% of the way there with my 50 watt Marshall 250DFX. I have gain at 8 o'clock, bass at 12 o'clock, contour at 12 o'clock, treble as high as I can go, a tiny bit of chorus, and my pickup selector set to bridge for that "sharp" sound.

It sounds very glammy, though. I might try getting a treble booster pedal.

If I remember correctly, KK and Glenn had Hamer guitars with maple necks and fretboards. These can be contributing factors to the exceptional brightness of their tone.

Oh here's a pic:

Maple, definitely.

I hear ya. That's Digitech right there.

Speaking of Digitech, they do include a preset called TIPTON on their multi-effects, you might want to check that out.

Then I'm in luck, because my guitar has a maple neck.

I saw a picture of their guitars a while back on the net. Can't remember where, or I would've posted it.
