That is the bass that i have (except mines dark green), it's an Ibanez SRX 505. i've been playing bass for 18 months now. Anyone who wants to play a really cool song on the bass i recomend Caught In A Mosh by Anthrax, it's fucking ace!

Does anyone else get hard skin forming on their fingers after a while? is it normal or is my technique of playing wrong?

It's normal, and even seen as a rite of passage. Some bassists are proud of their callouses (what they're called).

Don't do that... Use them to for muting instead.

Muting can be such a bitch sometimes.

Anyhow.

I think the bassist on Mudvayne is one of my idols. He plays pretty well actually.

Even though Mudvayne isn't on Metal Archives.

Left hand muting is so much easier than right hand. For me anyway.

Muting becomes so much easier if you know how to use both hands for it though... I normally (on slow parts) mute the strings below where I'm fretting with the fretting hand, and those above with my picking hand.

I pick with all fingers except my pinky though, so that probably makes it easier to use them for muting.

Today I tried one of these at Sound Control
Image

It was the best 5-string bass for the money, so I'm gonna get one of these some time soon unless I find one for the same price or less that's better.

Also got to play it through an Ampeg so it sounded sexy as fuck.

Yamaha are always incredible instruments for what you pay for them. Can't go wrong with them. I have an old RBX that I love playing.

I've tweaked the electronics a bit, but even with the original it sounded great.. I replaced and 80's fender jazz with it...

I have an RBX too, it's quite the awesome. But for running around like a madman, I prefer my Esp LTD

I love "different" time signatures. 7/8 and 17/16 are some of my favorites.

i also got a Peavey Grindbass BXP which I defretted
play those into a Digitech BP80 into a Peavey TNT 115 (210 watt) combo amp.

sounds like wretched ass through 1 15" speaker, but it's gotten me through a few gigs.

I own a Cort Action Bass and a Kustom Amp, good combination. The cort has a great sound, I had for three years and it never let me down the only fuck up that incurred was that when I started I used to tune the thing to standard C so I can play arch enemy and In flames, after a while it screwed up the pegs, so I have to fix the strings. Otherwise I recommend a Cort to anyone starting because its cheap and has a great sound, IMO over the Ibanez SG.

Quite agreeable. But onto my question, I was jamming with a friend and I used his distortion pedal, and I thought it sounded neat. My question, do any of you use distortion at all?

Full-out distortion, no (nothing wrong w/ it, just not right for TLF), but a little something to add some grit, yeah.

I am equipped with
Ibanez GSR 200 4 string
DR strings
Fender Rumble 15 W Combo

thats about it

so ya i plan on getting some new stuff in the next couple of months, heres what im looking for

-Pickups with a nice warm tone and versatile for most kinds of music, moderate price
-an amp that would be good for full ensemble jams inside someones house, not giggin or anything like that. moderate price
-some basic recording equipment i dont really know what im looking ofr there
-some pre-amp effects, specifically distortion, to describe the sound im looking to achieve that chunky death metal sound like on the new skinless records, moderate price

anyways if anyone could give me input on what i should or should not get thatd be great thanks

I'm playing on an RBX right now (mines black though) I think it ran me around $400.
Unfortunately I haven't had it a full year yet and I've already had to bring it in twice for shoddy manufacturing problems with the pre-amp. It was still covered by the warranty luckily, but it's a bit of a hassle. Definitely a great bass though, my first 5-string and it felt really comfortable, nice thick neck, awesome little indents for your thumb on the pick-ups...

I have two basses, been playing for a year. Self-taught.

Playing in two bands already. :)

The guy that asked how one can get better at 'rhythm' and got no answer: Use a metronome when you practice. Actually, use a metronome always. Go sleep while the metronome works. You'll sleep with rhythm. :)

I've heard numerous things about the electronics being a bit troublesome, batteries quickly running flat, etc.

-learn and practice your scales, theory, etc. until it becomes second nature
-develop a technique thatll give you a nice clean sound and not carpel tunnel or some other hand related injury
- i wouldnt recommened a pick, fingers are a lot better to me in my opinions
- listen to other metal bassists
-practice some cool songs

activebass.com is a great site for online bass lessons they have a whole section of lessons for learning metal bass

for guitars

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=515059

i highly recommend this one, great for the begginer, very versatile

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=511202

if you want a bass that looks more "kvlt" and "metal", this may be more visually appealing, i dunno how good it is

hope ive helped

If I were you I would avoid any of the cheaper BC Rich guitars and basses. The bronze series is horrible IMO.

What are your opinions on using fender precision basses for metal? I'm thinking of getting a used vintage 62 reissue version.

I have a p-bass and in my opinion i think they suck for metal cause they dont have the design and the sound isnt that good.

The design and shape isn't what makes me decide whether to buy it or not. As for the sound, i'll be playing power, traditional and a bit of black metal. I've heard that the p-basses are quite decent for playing any genre of music, and since I wont only be playing metal, but some rock as well I thought it might be a good choice, especially since I could get it real cheap.

I'm not sure what the proper name is, but I always remember the packaging.I use "D'darrio" I think thats the name, for the last 5 years solid. They've never rusted or broken on my yet, I clean them MAYBE once a month. They're pretty solid brand and I wouldn't stray from them. That's my suggestion.

I went over to guitar center today to try out some pedals but eventually got side-tracked and made my way over to the bass section.

I was playing around with several basses until I decided to pick up a fretless (hadn't tried one before). I played for maybe about two or so hours and talked to some of the guys there about fretless basses and whatnot. I was surprised that none of them really pushed me to buy anything, but they were still really helpful.

Anyway, I really liked a Schecter that I was playing, but I didn't catch the name of it before I left. I do remember it was a Stiletto-model, had 4-strings and was fretless, but nothing else really. The price was around $350. It also had fret markers but I want to try and get one without them cause part of me feels like I would be cheating :D

On another related note, I also tried out a couple of basses from a company I had not hear of, Ocean. According to the guy at the store they're a new company based in Germany but I can't find any info on them. The basses had a regular shaped body with an ESP-like head. The necks were pretty thin too. Most of the basses were priced around $700.

Any help on either of these would be very helpful.

The Schecter was probably the Stiletto Studio 4, since it's the only 4 stringed model that is available as Fretless according to their site.
http://schecterguitars.com/spec.asp?id=110

The only problem is, that the price is almost triple the price you mentioned.
