I am young and new to the whole musician stuff and I need some help with something that has been on my mind for quite some time. I recently started my own solo Viking/Black Metal project and I soon found a few friends who I chat with online who have volunteered to be part of this project as well. We have just released our first full-length and realised that my technique in recording is very amature (duh) and has had a terrible effect on the quality of our songs. I thought I did a good job with the music itself, but the quality is terrible. The vocals are quiet often, the guitar chords are very distinct, the keyboard is a bit out of sync, and the only good part is the drum sounds which I have synthisized to save us the trouble. Our music is pretty much digital-only and I was wondering what kind of recording/mixing programs or software I should get online to help improve our quality?

Problem #1: You don't know how to play your instrument(s).
1. Get a metronome.
2. Practice.
3. Practice some more.

Problem #2: You don't know how to record your instrument(s).

Just listened... holy shit I second Zodi's suggestion. this should have only been shared between you and whoever is doing this with. it's a working demo at best.

I know how to play, just the recording methods completely ruin the quality unfortunately.

No there is a lot that's way out of time. You might know how to play but not in time with yourself or someone.

I... just... what? how?

That sounds like you recorded a lowest quality youtube video with a over ten year old cellphone standing in the middle of the room and growling at the same time. Not to mention how out of time everything is.

What equipment and programs you used to record that? I'm genuinely interested, I don't even know how you can get that kind of a recording quality if you are not just joking.

I have to echo what's been said. That may well be the worst recording I have ever heard. Even the synthetic drums sound awful, and somehow out of time.

What drum program did you use? How did you record the guitars?

I'm literally impressed by how bad that sounds. I'm positive I couldn't make a recording that bad sounding if I tried my very hardest, and I don't know shit about anything.

Tip #1

Do NOT record with a cellphone. I know it's been said, but I'm pretty positive that this was recorded with one of those older Motorola flip-phones.

Tip #2

Minimalism has a limit.

1) Get a microphone (they can be found at wal-mart for as little as $5...it won't sound good, but it will work enough.
2) Plug microphone into computer
3) Get Audacity (it's a program, it's free)
4) Put some headphones on the drummer with a metronome while he records (with audacity)
5) Put some headphones playing the recorded drumtrack on the guitarist
6) Repeat for other instruments
7) Import each recording into audacity, adjust volume as needed
Result: Better than before.

Wow. I told myself I wasn't going to pile on, but I can't help it! Just what the fuck. I can't even guess how or why such a poor recording exists.

Do a quick search here on the forum, there are tons of basic tips and it sounds like you need to start over at the beginning. Assuming you've got a couple hundred bucks, buy a proper mic and an interface and then go from there.

Not even Ildjarn can get this necro.

Man, get some knowledge about using a daw in a pc, get the right gear to do the job and then practice a lot with your instrument.
