What are some recommended dynamic mics I could find new or used under $60 that might be a fair pic for recording black metal, stoner doom, and drone? I want to say I would also use it for vocals but a vocal mic is something to look at further down the line. If it doesn't seem like there's a decent choice then I will hold off a little bit and get the sm57, I just want to move away from vsts and recording with my amp, just without my nady starpower1 mic.

I mean, you can find an SM57 used for $60 almost without question. Even new, it's not like the thing breaks the bank. Just save a few more bucks, man.

Yeah I looked at this thread yesterday and had that same thought, "lower price alternative"? I paid like 70 or 80 Euros for my SM57 new. Just gotta search for dealers with good offers.

I'm going to keep that PG57 in mind, but I will also keep an eye out for used SM57s as well. Now what would I need to keep in mind when looking for a second microphone to be used for vocals opposed to the dynamic mic? This is further down he line but is there any model other than the Shure 58s I should be looking at?

Save some bucks for some SM57s, and check for them used. You'll use them for years and they're VERY difficult to break. Did a test dropping one 3 floors and it still worked fine and they can sustain an insane amount of SPL.

As for a vocal mic, a lot of metal vocalists seem to swear by the SM7B which I've never had the chance to use. I normally either use a U87 or AKG C414 for vocals but those are at quite a bit higher price point. The SM58 ain't that bad for vocals to start off with depending on what you want to do.

I like the sound of that durability, I think I will certainly save for that then. I will look at those two mics for vocals considering it will be a little further down the line.

You might want to check out the Samson CS, you can get it on amazon for ~$40 including shipping. It comes with two different interchangeable pieces that you can switch between depending on whether you want to record vox or instruments, so basically it's a SM-57 and 58 in one package. Very good value for the money.

If you have a 58 and want to record an instrument just screw off the mic's head and it's pretty much a 57.

I'm reading that the only difference between the two aside from the grill is that the sm57 has a higher output, is this in anyway a fault to recording raspy, glutteral, and shrieked vocals?

It shouldn't be a problem as long as you have a proper gain structure to ensure that you aren't clipping but that's the case with any mic.

A 57 should more or less be the first mic you get. You can never go wrong with owning one. If you want to use it for vocals just get a pop filter (or make one with a wire coathanger and a sock/tights/other thing fabric) and you'll be fine. 57s and 58s are close enough in sound that unless you're recording at a very high level there probably won't be much of a noticeable difference in a mix.

My pg57 picked up way too much ambient noise in the room when I tried recording with it. More experienced users will get around that obviously, but newbs like me will probably not want to pick this one up as an instrument mic.

I got this in the mail today and I'm loving it, the only little issue I have has more to do with my ux2 having trouble recognizing it's plugged in so I do a lot of scrambling plugging in and out trying to get it to recognize it. It sucks that it's not even working with the microphone input on my ux2 so I'm settling on the 1/4 inch cable for now but overall the mic does a great job, this will hold me down for a while til I can get an sm57 or better.
