So I just got me a double bass pedal and am trying to figure out what works best for me--playing heel up or heel down. At slow speed any one of those works, but for playing faster, heel up would work best, except that I find it awfully uncomfortable, it forces my upper body backwards and away from the kit and it makes me sit only on my coccyx, so to speak. How do people do it without ruining their backs?

It's the way you are sitting. I don't sit like that and I play more with heel up. Hell most likely no other drummer would just put themselves in constant pain in order to play a certain way. That's why everything is adjustable to YOU. Maybe raise your seat more. Get yourself comfortable in how you are sitting before anything else.
