I was giving Wintersun's Time reviews a read (giving the album a torrent now; quite curious) and man, there's 31 of them. Many of which are decidedly average (how did zodi's get accepted?!?). I remember a few years back when 25 was sort of an unofficial cap for review numbers, and doing another MoP/Reign in Blood review required either Wilde-level wit or a doctoral thesis. This has changed.

I'm inclined to thnk that this is because if you're a trusted reviewer you now get your stuff automatically accepted. This is cool, it saves time for mods. But the obvious downside is that I could write my usual cheap 'n' cheerful 4 paragraph stuff for a wintersun, or a Morbid Angel or whatever and it'd get thrown in with the rest.

So my suggestion: keep the trusted reviewer thing, but fiddle around with the programming or whatever so that it's only automatically accepted if there's less than 20/15/even 10 reviews on the album. That way the review queue is still pretty mod friendly, I think; plus you weed out superflous reviews on big albums cos maaan there's a lot of them right now.

Cheers!

I think it's kinda lame that the standards are not higher for albums with many reviews, but the admins' perception is not the same and we've been told not to act like there's an arbitrary review cap. I almost kill myself when I see a new review for Reign In Blood in the queue but that's the way it is.

If you find reviews that aren't really acceptable anymore, you can report them and their deletion will be considered for sure.

Yeah, but it always been like that. I don't see how the scribe status is changing this, if a scribe writes and submits a poor non acceptable review, he could lose his status, I guess. This never happened and we don't give the scribe status to anyone anyway. I know that's not what you're saying but I don't see the point of not approving the reviews of a scribe automatically even if there's more than 20 reviews for the albums.

first of all: baltic?

Regarding reporting reviews; well I guess I could do that, but it just seems like a bit of a snobby/OCD thing to do really. I don't want to be the douche that's filling up Oven Fodder.

Huh, really? I thought more review=more quality had been an established rule since forever.

The practice for many years was not so much an arbitrary cap, but a general belief or notion held among the mods who worked most on the review queue. That notion centered on the idea that numerous reviews for albums ought to be compared to one another in terms of content and quality, in order to avoid redundancy and improve overall quality of content. In other words, if there were X number of reviews, and 4 or 5 said the same thing, there was a tendency to judge which ones were "better" at proving the point (and to keep them). It was a form of "mod micro-managing" that the owners, notably Morrigan, felt was unnecessary and unfair to our reviewers. We were informed last year to forego that practice, and to strictly adhere to the review guidelines as written. Those guidelines imply that there is no "arbitrary cap" and no need for "mod micro-managing." If a review appears to us to give a reasonable assessment/criticism of an album's music, and does so with good grammar and formatting, we accept it. No further questions asked.

Fair enough. Thanks for clearing that up :)
