i just discovered this site and have had a look around. i read the FAQ but don't see any mention of my problem. when i wrote on my profile and used the devil horns \m/ the first slash is ignored... is this a known problem? or am i missing something? not a big deal really, just wanting to know if it's a problem at my end.

It'll be an escaping issue. Try using two slashes instead:

\\m/
