So I've made this report a while ago and no one seems to have picked it up. I know there's a lot of stuff in the queue and I'm not bashing anyone for it still being untouched, but I though it would be better to bring it up here and in the process clarify this doubt which made me do the report in the first place.

So when are releases considered compilations and when are they considered simply reissues with bonus material? In the case I reported the 7"EP was released in CD format with the first album and the demo of the band. Should that stand as a compilation or a reissue? And why?

I'm hoping that someone with higher powers can answer these questions.

I know I'm not someone with higher powers, but I personally only consider something a compilation if a) it's marketed as such, or b) it's given an entirely different name compared to the albums it compiles, like this. If a release maintains the same name and cover art, or is marketed to the public as a reissue of the original album, I would simply consider it a reissue. In that Funebrarum album's case, I'd consider it a reissue instead of a full new compilation album.

Wise words indeed. One thing does come to mind though, and that is the example provided by Depravity's compilation on DDR last year. Same cover and name, except with bonus material and marketed as a compilation instead of a reissue.

So from the factors described above would it only need one of them to be true as to not be considered a compilation? Which in the case in point (Depravity's) would be it being marketed as a compilation instead of a reissue, despite having the same cover and name?

Hmm, you provide a good point. After looking at that Depravity album, I'm not sure what to make of it...I'm leaning slightly towards it being a compilation instead of a re-release, simply because it's compiling material from five different albums (which is almost certainly unheard of for reissues, which usually only have one or two demos as bonus material), but that sounds like a rather arbitrary way to divide the two. I suppose, when in doubt, you could rely on the type of release the label refers to it as, which would be a compilation in this case.

I agree with the reasoning you provided on your early post, but then again those kind of examples do arise. I guess it's as you say and all comes down to how the label releasing a record markets it.

Thanks for the insight.

Yeah, that should be ok. Also, it's not the same cover. Look again.

Yes it's not 100% equal, but you know what I meant in the first place. :p
