It depends on a number of factors, but they all narrow down to one point: would it make sense to include it in a metal encyclopedia? The reason we lean towards accepting (as exceptions) non-metal side-projects from notable musicians, or even in some cases non-metal projects like Mortiis, is because we feel such projects fit within the metal scene, have metal listenership, and overall would help this encyclopedia to a more "complete" encyclopedia of all-things-metal. Perhaps the side-project you gave might be that, it matters less on its genre, and more on that.

Blacklisted for being punk-based grind. I'll have to agree.

Detailed explaination of side projects.

Hmm. Well the group in question is a band called The Almost. They are a side-project of Aaron Gillespie, the (then current) drummer for everybody's favorite Jesus-core band, Underoath. Not sure what effect that info will have. Not the biggest fan, but they do fit all the criteria, so I figured I'd ask.

EDIT: Then again, maybe the point is moot. I attempted to start a draft for the band, but they appear to be blacklisted. Perhaps someone tried already.

Side-projects are only accepted if they're created by an established *metal* musician, and generally in tandem with a larger, more illustrious metal band. You expect an ex-member of a metalcore band (whose presence on the site is only based on one or two early albums) to be considered a "famous metal musician"...?

Hi guys, you rejected the italian band Koza Noztra because - as you say - there isn't any proof of physical release, but the italian magazine Rock Hard published their anthology "Strategia Della Tensione" (double disc format). Here the proof:

I didn't reject it, but the blacklist note says it's not metal. The question of it being a valid side-project will be addressed.

We've looked through it, and I'm afraid it wouldn't qualify as a non-metal side-project exception for the Archives.

The most notable band associated with the band "Phase" is "Black Winter," which doesn't seem like a very notable band in the metal scene - it consists of essentially splits and demos with few reviews. I'm sorry but "Phase" is unacceptable.

Could someone check D again? I think they'd fit somewhere under symphonic/folk/gothic metal, and of course if they're denied again I won't make a fuss, but I think they're metal enough for the archives. Here's a few samples of their music:

Yeah, that's metal enough. Japan has a huge population, dunno why the bands always use the same vocalist though.

Yeah, they have similar styles many of the bands, it's always nice when you get something different such as Ganleryus though. Anyways, may I give submitting them a go?

They're blacklisted, and were initially submitted by someone else so I'll redo the whole band submission up to date and complete when I have time.

Hi,
I've noticed that Dir en grey were blacklisted.

I want to ask if you can accept them for the album Dum Spiro Spero, like it happened for Soulfly with Enslaved. http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Soulfly/3540344931

Dum spiro spero samples:

We don't accept bands based on a different band/case and this Dir En Grey album is not quite different from their earlier stuff. The heavy elements are more on the core side, still not acceptable. I don't care what wikipedia says.

You're entitled to. However, according to this site's definition of metal, they are not acceptable. The band (and also the album) has been brought up many times before, so please use the search function next time for bands with similar popularity.

Well, you disagree with the whole staff because that's the general consensus. You can still like the band, I like Uroboros personally, and accept that MA doesn't consider them metal. Also what Az said.

Ok.
So maybe my problem is another one: I've not understand why band like Soulfly or Van Canto are here: they are not according to this site's definition of metal; maybe Van Canto are a side project, you can say, but it's an a capella band: it' like a metal singer having for example, a country music side project.
And Soulfly debuted as a nu metal band.

Nothing against these bands, of course, and I don't want to force nobody to add bands that I like, but I don't see any coherence in some of your chooses.

Van Canto are a special exception because of their listenership, reknown and place within the metal community. Soulfly were finally accepted because their last album was judged undeniably metal by the staff (with the albums coming before already showing a progression culminating with such a release). Why do you say you don't understand Soulfly's approval? Your post before made it quite clear that you did. "Enslaved" was judged metal enough by our standards, "Uroboros" not. It's that simple. Now please sit back, browse the forums and stop posting here for a while until you have gotten better acquainted with our rules and guidelines.

Ah, I quite like dir en grey, but even on my ipod, I've got them listed as nu-metal generally. Even if they're a really freaking heavy nu-metal band, that's what they seem like to me. :P

And yet another rejected band I'd like somebody to double check, Akira Takasaki's old band Lazy, they were a total pop group in the 70s, but with Akira's growing appetite for metal leading up to Loudness' formation he also managed to turn Lazy into a way heavier band than they started as.

Here's some samples, the progression of the band's sound is kinda funny, hearing how they get heavier as their discography progresses:

70's
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jo74nBSn ... re=related
80's
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMJ5_sPw ... re=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCcdFhxuBkA
(Then they disbanded for almost 20 years)
00's
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6pdB5WiLJ4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dj0TCvTTkwc

Are they metal enough for the archives yet or do they need another 10 year span of getting heavier? xD

Deathcore at best and nu-metal/alternative at worst. Personally I'm glad they're off this site.

Also, can you please use standard English capitalisation for English track titles? I noticed in your submission for "D" there were several releases with titles and tracks that were in all-caps.

Oh, I'm sorry, just copied how some of the tracks were shown from their OHP, otherwise I try to keep the capitalisation normal. :P

For Japanese bands, especially those that have songtitles in both Japanese and English (or French or Dutch or whatever), the use of capitalization (or not) often has a deeper meaning. In my opinion, it would be correct if this would be reflected on their pages on MA.

A good example (Earthshaker: Aim):
