Yeah err, that seems pretty pointless. We should only mark something that is not the standard silver factory press (ex. CD-Rs, Pro-CD-Rs, golden CDs or those pitch black ones). I'll tell him to stop doing that.

I had asked him to respond to this thread and explain. He emailed me because he can't remember his login and apparently doesn't know how to recover it:

As for the changes I've made have not been on a whim, Metal Archives is
known for its accuracy in the data, in my defense, and being punctual in
theme Tomb band, I must say that part of the duplication of the tape
therefore I own the master to take every copy cassette, the master comes in
a single track, so just make an issue where cut spaces in blank for a few
seconds, then separate track in the 6 tracks , whereby the time of each
track was modified for a few seconds.

1. http://www.metal-archives.com/report/view/id/540172 :(

2. as a result of "now we're able to add lineups on comps!", some users like http://www.metal-archives.com/users/San_Sebastian have been adding all band members to them, without even a (tracks so and so) note. a bit confusing, me thinks.

Have I done something wrong? By my count, 51 reviews + 33 edits is about 288 points, but I have 283. It is only 5 points, but I want to clarify if I fucked up somewhere and had points deducted because of it.

Wasn't that.

Not sure... I would say its possible you were given 3 points for a couple of reviews, but that wouldn't explain the 5 point discrepancy.

Not really point-whoring, but is this annoying?
http://www.metal-archives.com/users/Paw
He always adds useless links like @Prog Archives, @Last.fm, @Wikipedia, @musik-sammler.de although given in unofficial tab is correct.
It looks like spamming. I'm afraid he will soon add links of Metalkingdom.net and Spirit-of-Metal too.

Honestly, the entire links section needs to be looked at in my opinion. This is just one example of the point whoring that goes on daily there. In my opinion Last.fm shouldn't be added at all unless there is unique info on the page not present elsewhere (for obscure bands). Plus 90% of people adding it put it under "official," which is almost always not the case.

Wikipedia is even dodgier. Just a waste of effort when there are tons of other tasks to be done on the site that are more constructive.

The general rule of thumb for links is that they should contribute useful, encyclopedic information that can't be added to the site. In other words, the links should COMPLEMENT the information on the site. Generally this means that if the information held within a link reiterates what's already on the site or can be added to the site than the link is redundant and shouldn't be included. The only exception to this rule is for official pages, but those complement the site by providing useful information about the band directly from the band.

For the most part information that's in last.fm links, Wikipedia links, Discogs, Musik-Sammler, etc., don't do anything more than reiterate what's already on the site. In other cases, people are just lazy and don't want to do the work of adapting the information in those links to this site (eg. bios, album versions, etc.). That's no excuse.

since it's been brought up (again), several bands feature their lastfm page in the official links on their website, sometimes even "using" it as an off page, like enabling downloads, etc. I presume it's ok to add lastfm on the band profile then, but should it be "official" or "unofficial"?

If there's downloads or some other clear sign that the band is in control of the page, "official". If not, better go with "unofficial". Not really sure if downloads are a foolproof way of checking this, though.

Not a big fan of Discogs, but many users add the link for the very purpose of complementing what's already here, considering that the site offers multiple scans, which we don't. I don't normally add Discogs links, but I do add demoarchives links for the same reason, having more scans, and for the fact that I don't feel comfortable copying a biography verbatim from there, just because it's there - reason being doubt not laziness. ;)

Also noticed now that he makes very minor changes (like 1-2 seconds) to track lengths. Moderation history, Ctrl+F "mankind machine" and a couple other Anvil ones under that for example.

EDIT: I seem to have fixed the cases of wrong capitalization from November.

I don't know if this is the right place to post this issue, but I've been wanting to edit the title of Gojira's L'Enfant Sauvage. I turns out I cannot do so. It is written as "L'enfant sauvage" and that is incorrect. I was wondering if anyone can take a look at it.

Thank you.

It's not incorrect, that's the correct French spelling.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I was trying to point out the capitalization of the words. Here's a link to the video of the title track posted on the band's official YouTube channel.

That's what he was referring to as well, actually.

See also.

EDIT: oh fuck, I thought you were advocating for the spelling "L'enfant sauvage" for some reason. Yeah, I'll change that. A report for the page will do in the future.

I don't mean to be nitpicky, but shouldn't the s in sauvage be capitalized as well? "Sauvage" is a noun and should be capitalized if you are writing it the same way the band did on the album's track list.

Nothing nitpicky about it, I'm simply a moron. Changed. And I'm on a roll today... It's actually an adjective, not a noun. So it's not capitalised in this case.

It's also worth clarifying that we don't always adhere to how it's written by the band, but try to go by the official standard for the respective language (if it exists in some codified form).

It's been a while since I've taken grammar in English class. It just looks annoying as fuck when I compare the way it's written on the band's page and my physical CD. By the way, I don't even like the album very much.

Seems to me like many of the "Modified album data" updates are cover art updates with no real change to them.

How do you know that? The earlier images might have been too tiny or low quality; the ones he is updating to seem to be decent size.

Is it point whoring? Given his history, maybe; but I don't think this is worth fussing over.
