White Knuckle Trip http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=3540303375

They started off like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP__PW5D0h4 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gC79lYg1IEA

And then, their second EP is like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYcXp5JRKqk

And their last EP is like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYcXp5JRKqk (listen to the whole thing...)

So...I don't know what you guys wanna do about that, but they start off heavy/groove/thrash sort of stuff, go mallcore, and then do some sort of mix of modern rock/metalcore/even some melodeath riffs.

I would suggest to change the genre for the lately accepted band Bloodiest http://209.59.186.200/~metalarc/bands/B ... 3540326032 from Sludge/Post-Rock to Progressive Atmospheric Metal/Rock

Bal-sagoth. Currently listed as Epic/Symphonic Black Metal. http://v2.metal-archives.com/bands/Bal-Sagoth/12#band_tab_discography

I think we can all agree this album is black/death, blackend death, epic black/death, or whatever linguistic variation you want to put on it.

But what genre is this stuff the band went on to do?

I'm honestly not sure what to call what they do post-black moon, but it certainly doesn't sound like black metal to me.

Now that people can report bands for having the wrong genre on their page, is this thread really necessary anymore?

If you listen to their latest release -- available as a free download -- then you will recognize the term 'black metal' is quite inadequate for it.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Jam ... 3540311693

I've already reported that but it hasn' t been changed...Melodic death metal? Metalcore? Ok, the latest album has some MDM influence, but they are few and also, there is not a single trace of metalcore to be found. Just "Progressive metal" is the right tag in my opinion.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Unexpect/302

They should be listed just as "avantgarde metal" since progressive metal is only one of the many influences they have in their sound.

About James Labrie....I've never heard his solostuff until now (and only what's on myspace). The tracks on myspace from the latest album sounds pretty much as how the project is described here at MA (progressive/melodic death/metalcore). Just listen to the track 'One more time'. A band playing music like that would without any question be labelled Melodic death/metalcore. Forget the name 'James LaBrie' and his progressive past for a second, and it should be obvious. Progressive/Melodic Death Metal/Metalcore actually seems a fitting description.

Yes, I said that the album has a little MDM influence (I don't hear metalcore at all, where do you hear that? the heaviest riffs and vocals are clearly MDM influenced and not metalcore at all), but the influence is just in a few tracks, the rest is progressive metal, simpler than Dream Theater but it is...some parts of the songs in MDM style are not enough for a genre change, especially when the first LaBrie album was totally devoid of MDM influences.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Amorphis/1

I think the later tag of Amorphis is a bit misleading.

I know it's hard to describe bands that have changed genre lots of times, but their latest stuff is heavy enough to be some kind of modern gothic/melodic death, so they're a lot more metal than their current genre would imply.

I've seen some reports about Die Apokalyptischen Reiter saying that they changed their style to heavy metal/hard rock after Riders on the Storm. Now I'm not exactly an expert on the band and only know a few of their songs, but I just skimmed through the album Licht (2008) and there's indeed no trace of death metal or much folk that I could hear. Just German-language heavy metal with some groove and softer rock parts.

Anyone familiar with their other post-2006 albums?

The band being popular I apologize if this has been brought up before.

I just got Silentium's first album (Infinita Plango Vulnera) out of a random buy. It doesn't sound like classic gothic metal to me, it sounds more like gothic/doom metal. Here are some songs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJyfBYC7g_o

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrjIX7Fp88A

Some songs sound rather folkish, like this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iW2NTrU_SU

The band's current stuff is definitely gothic metal, I think that the genre should be gothic/doom (early) / gothic metal (later)

I dont know it this is the right place to post this but, I noticed that bands: Metallica, In Flames, are currently tagged in the archives as "Modern" Metal.

I dont know about you but I think "Modern" is related to time and not kind of music. If somebody tells me X Band plays "Modern Metal", I would think the band plays some sort of "nowdays metal", but the word "Modern" won't tell me what kind of "nowdays metal" this is.

If you are suggesting that Metallica and In Flames music is a mix of music styles (including numetal and the current trendy style known as metalcore) I would've used the word "Alternative" instead, for it suggests that they incorporate elements from non-metal styles without reaching the point of being "Experimental Metal".

but of course, this is only a personal point of view.

While we're on this subject, could we add "metal" to the genre fields to these bands? Just seeing "Death" show up on the search is really weird.

Also, that sounds like pretty straight up groove metal to me.

Although this is not so important but it is more appropriate to modify the following genres:
http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Auspex/36143 from power metal to progressive/power metal
http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Hea ... 3540262601 from power metal to power/heavy metal

I second this, through youtube I listened most of the songs of the album Infinita Plango Vulnera, and indeed sounds like gothic/doom. Not only that, I also went forward and listened a song from the second full length, Altum, it sounded gothic/doom as well. So I went into one of the few reviews http://www.metal-archives.com/reviews/S ... ltum/8931/ , you'll see that this user also used the word "doom" to describe this. So, I support the decision of changing the genre of the band to gothic/doom metal (early) / gothic metal (later)

My answer to Silentium's report:

I couldn't disagree more. No heaviness, no riffs, nothing I'd associate with doom metal.

I cant help thinking that perhaps you are basing your decision on what you KNOW is true doom metal, and not in what the majority THINKS is doom metal.

By example, I don't believe Silentium should be labeled as "gothic", cause for me gothic music should sound like 80's goth-rock; however I do understand that most metalheads have a different opinion about what is "gothic" and what's not. Same thing happens with melodic death metal, for me Children of Bodom aint such thing, and still they got the melodic death tag cause the majority says so.

I do know that Silentium is not like true doom metal, but if early Theatre of Tragedy and early Lacrimas Profundere were labeled as "doom" I don't see why early Silentium should be tagged as just "gothic", their guitar riffs are nothing like common gothic metal bands (Entwine, To/Die/For, Darkseed, Sentenced, For my Pain; bands that usually stand on pure palm muted riffs, and they completely go in a faster tempo than early Silentium). For me, early Silentium has more in common to doom/gothic like early Theatre of Tragedy.

I don't think the heaviness of early Theatre of Tragedy can be compared to Silentium. Take out the gothic elements of ToT and what you'll get is pretty much doom/death. Do the same with Silentium, and what's left, if anything? Power ballads, some sort of melodic/dark metal perhaps? Certainly nothing I'd associate with doom metal.

The vocalist of Internal Harvest asked me wondering if the band's genre could be changed to "Experimental Dark Metal"...

look, I dont represent MA in anyway, and I dont even have enough rank to change genres in the files, but, in my personal opinion, "Dark" could mean many things. About "Experimental Metal", I guess there's different opinions about this, for me a band has to be really into working with different styles to be labeled like that, for me Experimental Metal is something like this: http://www.bnrmetal.com/v3/genres/one/Q

But, as I said before, this is a personal opinion of a user, it is the mods opinion that counts, and only they will judge if the band is experimental enough, or if "Experimental Metal" is actually a real genre in the first place. I felt the need to post this because for me "Experimental" or "Eclectic" Metal, does exist; but here it doesnt appear as an official genre, and if it does is under a different name.

Yeah, well... that's exactly the same thing I tried telling him too. Personally I don't even consider "Dark Metal" to be a real genre. But yeah, this was on the band's bequest alone... if all else fails, I can simply add "The band dubs their style Experimental Dark Metal" to the additional notes.

Thanks, I already took note of that when your username wasn't large, red and bold.

That might be the best course of action here.
