It's been quite annoying sometimes to stumble across a band profile where sometimes you can't read the band logo on the page being it's really illegible to read.

Hence I feel it would be a real small suggestion, but it would make a big difference to somehow, in the profile, have a section above the genre to read "Band Name" in clear text and not just have a logo (because, as I have said, sometimes you can't read the logo and would forget what band you're looking at.)

Any thoughts?

Just click on one of their releases to see their name printed. That's what I've done.

edit: This was a wasted 100th post. Oh well.

How would you end up on the page of a band you don't know the name of?

It was a bad design decision. You shouldn't have to do that to find the name of the band whose page you're on.

Good point (I didn't start this thread). But in order to evade defeat I will point out that not every web browser has that.

Meh like I said, it was just a minor suggestion and I've done all of the above before but I was curious to see if there should be some change done.

Well what about the whole "alternative spelling of name" or "past names" being present on the profile?

There is no "past names" field.

It really would help to see on which page one is. Putting it in a field above the Genre segment.
Putting the mouse on the logo does not work for me.

Hovering the mouse over the picture does not work for me using Opera 9.02:8585. Displaying the alt attribute on mouse over is not a requirement to conform to the (x)html standard. It is purely implemented by some browsers as an additional feature. This method for finding the band name cannot solve the problem.

Displaying the band name on the "bar at the top of the web browser" is also a feature implemented by web browsers. It is not a requirement to display the page title information on it. Also, the way this site has been implemented, the correct title information is only displayed if a direct link to the band page is used, not when navigating on the site.

I'm sure HellBlazer and Morrigan intended the band logos to display the name to the user, they probably overlooked the fact that a lot of logos are hard to read. It would be a good design decision to incorporate the band name into the band page as text, maybe for v2.

That is something that I do not have either because it edit the about:config of the Fx I am using; Gecko/20070309. This is also hardly a solution as tabs with a different width look rather stupid.

Actually, scratch that, ever since switching to FireFox (wohoo!), I can't view band names even when hovering my mouse under the band logo either.

Honestly, I'm with Funeral_Shadow on this one. This has happened to me a few times before, and yeah I can just go and look at one of their releases ..

But this wouldn't "hurt".

I usually go to a release page. But the bigger problem for me isn't to know the name of the band, but to get the exact spelling when linking to the band from other bands, to remember apostrophes and so on.

So, yes, having it in text would be a useful improvment.

Well what if the band name was over the top of the band image? This probably wouldn't be the best idea, however, because most bands don't have an image up on their page.

Or if not, then make a separate section (like what's done with the genre thing and lyrical content) and include all of the past names as well in that box... or just leave the band name that's intended.

... how's that?

I'll give you points for thinking of such name for my user ID (:gay:) but honestly (and apparently), it seems I wasn't the only one who complaint about the band name thing.

Plus, I didn't actually think it would be changed but apparently it's been changed (and some Norwegian dude in the general discussion forum apparently seems so elated that the name thing is displayed because he made a thread about it haha) so tough luck buddy.

I use Firefox and I don't think the mouse over the logo thing works out for most Firefox users unless I'm mistaken.

Don't care much for it, but I'll live.

Tooltip was always adequate for me, as well.

The point is, the band name should be just as easy if not easier to find than something like the lyrical themes. For bands with legible logos the old information display was adequate. However, with bands that have illegible band logos it wasn't adquate. Using the tooltip or clicking on a release by the band just to find the name is not good practice when it comes to information displaying. Placing the band name on the page was a good idea, however...

The colour is wrong for a start, but i'm sure this was intended in some way. My suggestion is making another row in the table above everything else that contains a "Name" field. This way you can also add an "Also known as" field to that row which contains the appropriate strings that are sometimes shown when using the search. Here is a hacked up image of what it would be like:

Image

But anyway. I do not know how the database is structured so I do not know for sure if this information can be pulled straight from the current band query.

You see the differences between alternate spellings and other names/also known as? Unles both fields were created, I couldn't care less for seeing three almost similar spellings of the same band. And the other names could easily be described in the additional notes, also giving info on when they were used and linking to the right places.

Scrap that. I did write a large post explaining an alternative way but I really can't be bothered anymore. For me, personally, the layout was fine before the change. I listen mostly to old metal bands and not the modern death and black metal with unreadable band logos anyway.

So yes, I don't like the way it is at the moment with the band name at the top in that red row and would probably prefer it to be removed altogether, reverting back to the old layout.

The reason why the name should have been on the page is due to me believing that you shouldn't use some hack method when it is not needed (i.e. hovering the mouse over the logo) and not because it has an affect on my MA usage.
