i haven't posted much on this forum, but i had an idea to improve the site. how about one the headers on every band page was language(s). so it'd be
genre
lyrical themes
language(s)

most the time you can tell, but i think it would be a very efficient way of putting some important and basic information up for each band

not a bad idea, that way you can search for bands that sing in a particular language, much like you can search for certain genres, song titles, albums, lyrical themes etc.

This was discussed a LONG time ago, and would create some problems. If I remember correctly it would cause problems with bands that sing in multiple languages and bands where the singing is so unintelligable it couldn't be properly assessed.

Couldn't multiple languages be entered in the first case, and simply 'unknown' in the latter?

well for the multiple languages, some bands have multiple genres entered, or multiple lyrical themes. i don't think that setting up like how the country is set up (one country, no more, no less) is good idea. and if it is unknown what language they sing in, then stae 'unknown.'

this thought came about when i was trying to find any bands that sung in Guaraní. and it just seemed like a really good idea to me

haha, no. i was just reading on wikipedia that Guaraní is the only native language in the americas to have most of its speakers be non-native. so i figured, mostly spoken in paraguay, so i looked all through the paraguay page, and i can't tell the difference between spanish and Guaraní that much. so, no luck

hmm.... that reminds me of something:

Quote:
Tesay Ro
Ko'eju Kuarahy
Opu'a Overa
Ojajai Omimbi
Ovy'a Opuka
Ñeha'a jehecha
Ñembo'e Rohendu
Japula Jekua'a
Toheja tyvyty
Ha toho toheka
Ko'eju Kuarahy
opu'a overa
Ñande ára pyahu
Ñamandu
toñua mimbipa, veraite

Ñande yvy oñemumba
hese ova,
oñemomgorapy
Ñande'y ojejoki
ojepuru ojerova

Oje'oi mbyry
hesay ombosyry
opytave opyta
omoko mbaero

Ojajai omimbi
ovy'a opuka
Ñaha'a Rohendu
japuka jekua
Toheja tyvyty
Ha toho toheka
iñirú rekoha

Che ruguy
pyta peéicha aveí
tove to ñehendu
Ñande ruguy

This is a song by Corrosion from Paraguay, and Spanish this is not.

I like the idea

seriously, is it that hard to say "various" if a band speaks more then one language, or if they changed over the course of time (ex: Dimmu Borgir), then say "Norwegian (early), English (later)"?

I like this idea also. It would help if someone wants to find a band who sings in a language that is "awesome" or a newcomer to metal might want to find bands that sing in his native language, whatever. If we can have lyrical themes, I don't see any reason why we couldn't have a language.

One thing. What Unorthodox said (with the Dimmu example), I suppose we would just do that for bands that record in their native language, and re-record in English? (e.g. Nokturnal Mortum is just "Ukrainian, English" or something)

definitely, i think it would work best if you couldn't browse by language, but could search by language. so if you had a band which sung in, like you said Ukranian and English then you could say "Ukranian, English" or "Ukranian (early), English)" or whatever. and if anybody seearched ukranian, then that band would come up. but i don't think browsing would work because of the multiple languages

Yeah. Browsing wouldn't work, as bands can only have one country. As i Said though, seatching would me ine.

I like this idea as well... think how many threads we get on the forum asking for bands who sing in any given language. Just include it the way we include lyrical themes and so on.

Maybe list the language per album?

It would be interesting to search by language and I could imagine some people would find good use for it.

As I stated earlier, it would be extremely useful, and would be a minor thing to implement, and wouldn't take up much extra page room. I'm for it, and I actually do hope it gets implemented.

I approve it, if it's just a small field similar to the lyrical themes one. But there must be some way to prevent point-whoring, it should be clear that this field is only to be used for non-English lyrics.

I also like that idea.

I think that the best way to prevent point whoring is to not award any points for users who update that field during the first 2-4 weeks after it's implementation. I also think that even english lyrics should be mentioned.

Makes sense. Also I think instrumental should be mentioned (not just for one song of course).

No it's not :brick:

Just remembered that it is in the lyrical theme box already, so I'll withdraw that suggestion.

Just got this email from Morri:

something about languages...

I think that "Help", "FAQ" and "Site rules" should be translated and avaible in other languages, maybe then some people will stop adding worthless stuff

(I can do, with someone, polish)

what do you think about this ?

what? polish is a language? I thought it was just some horrible sounds :D

haha

well, why not but which language to choose? and i'm sure that most users don't read the rules completely.

Spanish could be good (due to the huge amount of Mexican/South American users who cannot respect the rules, ESPECIALLY THE ONE THAT SAYS IT IS NOT ALLOWED TO WRITE EVERYTHING IN CAPITAL LETTERS"

why not translate it and put into a thread in the forums. if enough translations in the forums appear, i'm sure the admins will put links in the original english version.

But there should be a limitation in the total numbers in which it will be available. There are quite a big number of languages around and especially with the spread of the internet small language recieved more attention than before.
There is always some sort of level in which everyting makes sense. These languages would have to be taken care of if changes do occur. It would be necessary to have people in charge, who edit the changes into the framwork so the users always know what is going on. This can be a lot of work; think of 20 supported languages.
And who guarantees that there will always be users who will be able translate it? It is rather meaningless to have this pages in 20 languages if five are up to date.

if somebody translate something then this should be added (I started with "Site rules")
20 languages ... you are optimist :D
I think this languages will be translated (optimistic version) : Polish, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Hungarian, Swedish, Portuguese, Norwegian .... and this gives 9 :P

Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Russian, Finnish, Turkish, Danish, Greek, Indian to name some other important ones. with these we would have 18 ... and I might have forgotten some.
