I noticed Falkenbach is said to originate from Iceland.
Now, from where does that information come from?
As far as I know Vratyas Varkyas is a German with very limited ties to my country and Falkenbach was formed in Germany and has only been active in Germany.

Pretty sure DM was just going by Morrigan's earlier modification. She set the country of origin from Germany to Iceland and added the current warning:
Quote:
Do not change the country of origin to Germany; the band formed in Iceland, but Vratyas eventually relocated to Germany.

Yet his artist page says this:

Quote:
but he lived in Iceland for a while as a child.

So either he formed Falkenbach as a child or that information is wrong. I would like to see a source as well, because from all I remember from his old interviews Falkenbach was formed in Germany.

That bit about his childhood used to be on the band page from before v2. I remember moving it to his artist page.

I have asked Morrigan to check this thread.

Eh, I thought the Iceland thing was common knowledge but I don't remember the original source of the info...

Maybe someone has a recent interview, around the turn of the century I just know he liked his band to be billed as from "Germany/Iceland" and never gave a clear answer as to the actual origin of the band. Liked to leave fans guessing.

Best source I've seen so far was in the additional notes of the Læknishendr demo, which say that the main guy from Sólstafir said in an interview in 1996 in a zine I've never heard of that the demo was recorded in Iceland. That's at least a small pointer in the direction that the Iceland thing is true.

I wonder if the "origin" field would be better served instead if it was a "residency" field. A field dominated not so much by what the band wants you to believe its place of origin is, or what we can only guess is its origin, but where it actually (and presently) resides and makes music. It would seem that changing the purpose of the field to that would solve a whole hell of a lot of problems associated with bands wanting to embellish their mythological beginnings, tie themselves to a scene they don't belong to, or - due to ideological/political reasons - see themselves as being a part of a region they were not a part of outside of wishful thinking. Besides, it'd be easier to prove where a band is presently making music, then where it allegedly started.

That's the funny thing about "common knowledge", it's not necessarily true.

I'm not too concerned with Falkenbach claiming to be from Iceland but I find it very funny when people cite "common knowledge" without actually knowing the validity of the information.

However, if you have some time do read this old text and try to spot out the album titles.

What the fuck are you attacking me for? I made it clear from the start that I was leaning more towards the theory that the band is from Germany which is the point you are trying to make and nowhere did I attempt to substantiate a claim I don't believe in myself, anyone with half a brain or basic reading comprehension could see that. I was citing the above example as the only evidence I could find for the claim that the country of origin is in fact Iceland. Next time you claim anything lessens a point I am trying to make you should make sure to actually get the point.

I do apologize if you took it as a personal attack, as it wasn't meant to be one.

Edit: I did not read your post in context with your earlier post and therefore misunderstood you.

Reviving this thread because of a present discussion elsewhere about Falkenbach's real origins. It appears that the discussion here was left largely unresolved. In my opinion it makes sense to make the bands origins be Germany so I have done such and have removed the mod note. I'm open to further discussion here, though.

Well, it would be great if you could post the link to this discussion (if it was a public one).

Anyway, back in 1996 (rather than 1995) we heard about a band that was claiming to be Icelandic but no one knew anything about. Some digging was made and the one who found the info wrote to him (he was living in Germany then) in Icelandic to find out if he really was from Iceland. The story goes that the reply went something like "I don't understand what you are saying but...". I guess that pretty much answers any questions about Falkenbach's origins, right?

His alleged origin seems like a marketing gimmick from that time period.

No gimmick at all. Falkenbach was formed in Germany, not Iceland. I cant say where the confusion came from regarding Iceland to be honest, but can confrim Germany as the country of origin as far as the band goes. On a side note the new album sounds really amazing from the tracks I have heard.

Perhaps because it was said that the Læknishendr demo was recorded in Iceland?

^ Maybe Curwen, I never asked him about where any of the demo's were recorded to be honest though I would doubt he would travel to Iceland just to record this demo, but you never know.

So, you've resurrected the thread just to say that you like the new album? This isn't Metal Discussion forum. The original question has been solved. Locking the thread.
