I managed to get a few more up today, mostly thrash metal, and also my own review for the latest Harmony album. I might be able to sneak one more in before it hits midnight, though I've still got a lot of stuff that I'm going to try to hit before this thing ends. I probably won't be able to get to all of it.

P.S. - I'm happy to see that LiquidBraino made a nice little contribution just now. I've always though of myself as being a guru of power metal, but on the female fronted end, he's putting me to shame.

Oh well, I like that Mardelas more than him, so that balances things out. I hope he does Cross Vein, Ancient Myth's "Akashic" and MinstreliX's "Reflections" (they had a female vocalist on that one) sometime. Japan has a ton of female-fronted heavy/power metal bands these days. I seriously can see it outnumbering male-fronted bands soon. I should check my collection, maybe it already has! :lol:

I have to be honest, Japan's power metal scene, nay their entire metal scene is an area where I'm pretty starved for material and exposure. They have a delightfully different take on things based on what I've heard both lyrically and musically compared to a lot of their European rivals and I feel ashamed for not getting further into it given how much of an anime/manga nerd I was years back.

Perhaps our favorite female-fronted metal comedian will finally convince me to take the plunge and get more reviews in for Japan apart from a few Concerto Moon albums. :lol:

God damnit, I counted 70-75 Japanese female-fronted heavy/power (maybe some hard rock too) bands in my collection - and there's stuff I'm missing or have on order. :lol:

Area51 may get the dubious honor of the only female-fronted power metal band I don't care for.

Actually Inspire didn't do much for me either.

I think the huge problem is, there's no exposure for this stuff, its expensive as fuck, and a lot of it is pretty difficult to find (unless you know where to look). Also, some vox/music I found to be an acquired taste. Most of the good stuff ain't in English either. A lot of the stuff that Limb Music licensed back in the day I didn't care for (that may have been why I didn't get into this stuff until recently) - I may go back and give Concerto Moon and Ark Storm another go though. To be honest, a lot of the stuff from the early 00's didn't rock my socks too much (aside from Galneryus... Balflare and Azrael are decent too), and its more of a recent thing (last 5 years or so) where they're spamming bands I like. If you factor in the doujin scene (I'm starting to prefer doujin power metal to the regular stuff) - there's a metric fuckton of the stuff over there.

Euro power metal pretty much dried up for me over the last several years, so this is kinda filling the void. Strangely enough, the only Euro power/prog I've been buying lately is essentially Japanese pressings of CDs I already own - and maybe a few things I panned back in the day due to overload or whatever. A lot of this shit ain't that expensive, and I can flip my old copies on ebay.

Even though the last day looks a little low compared to the last week, there is some good news. Although we may not beat any all-time records this time around, I can now safely say that with the totals from today's tally this has been the most successful reviews challenge in the last 4 years! I finally contributed something. Not really going for numbers this time around as can probably be guessed by the length of that review, but I wanted to do something I'd been planning in my head for a while, not to mention something I really care about. Might be able to do another one later.

I should do coursework but i really dont wanna so im prob going to squeeze out a couple today. I have noticed its getting harder to write a proper extensive review mostly because i've run out of releases to say a lot of things about.

Just got my tenth in there for the sole unreviewed Symphorce album. Nothing extreme, but a lot faster than I've ever written before while working a full-time job. I don't feel the quality has suffered too much for it either, so I'm quite happy.

I've managed to get myself up to 20 reviews now, which I think is roughly around what I did during the challenge last year. I might manage to sneak one of two in prior to midnight, but I think I'm mostly finished. My work schedule is a bit different now than 5 years ago, especially since I got talked into joining an Iron Maiden tribute band that is having a fairly regular gig schedule.

Congrats to all participants, it looks like we came out with a respectable collective total for the challenging being on hiatus for a while.

Submitted my last one just a little while ago. While I'm in the reviewing spirit I will do two more tonight after work that I had promised I'd do, but I think I'll be glad to take a bit of a hiatus from reviewing after that, hah. I ended up not quite covering everything on my list, but I'm happy with how many I was able to do. A few of mine are in the more workman-like style of my older reviews but a bunch of them I'm honestly fairly proud of, so that's something I guess!

Whelp, I managed to get 3 more done, the last one I literally finished about 2 or 3 minutes before the buzzer. I still have to tag my little "also submitted to this website" tag onto it, but that brings my total for this challenge to 23. I can't wait to see what our total collective score was.

On the whole a great showing! Congratulations and thank you all for another successful reviews challenge! With 384 virgin reviews and 56 participants we have had the most successful reviews challenge in 4 years!

If you all feel like this is something worth continuing, I am willing to host another reviews challenge early next year. Normally the traditional time is May, but that is by no means set in stone. Until then!

It's possible to have a full time job and do what both he and Iamntbatman have done, but it usually involves about 2 weeks of advanced listening to the albums that you're going to review and you'll often find yourself repeating a similar format for each review. At least that was how it happened for me when I was doing 50 plus reviews on a few challenges about 5-6 years ago, since I've only read a couple of each of their reviews so far.

I still have a sizable heap of virgins that I will have to end up reviewing in the next couple of weeks given that they are extras that I got from my other reviewing job. I wouldn't be opposed to hitting it again in the earlier part of next spring like April or even March. I may do my taxes early just so I don't have any distractions on whatever week we end up choosing. :lol:

just because this challenge was a success doesnt mean we have to burn out on challenges right away again!
I suggest letting it rest for 6-8 months at least.

Not that it's a huge deal but I noticed my total is off by two. I think it's from December 3rd if that helps. Like I say nit a huge deal but if it's more than just me then the totals might be pretty far off.

Good work everyone! I'm all for having another challenge around late May, early June. I might even take a few days off to work for the next one! I have quite a few albums that I didn't get to, so I'll be finishing them off over the next couple of week. I also have a TON of Metal Observer stuff to catch up on, as I put all of that on the backseat to focus on the challenge. I guess 21 isn't bad, considering I worked about 60 hours that week and spent a good bit of time in the woods for the first week of deer season.

Thank you guys for this challenge. It was my first time and I really enjoyed being part of it and helping with some virgins here and there. I had lots of other records in mind, but as I didn't even bother listening to them weeks prior to the event, I had to go for albums that I could actually write and say something about without going over them. And of course I'll be willing to take part in another one. Good work guys!

I've always had a soft spot for the statistical side of things, not to mention that this will provide me with a future reference for checking out material that we hit during this thing. It's almost like having SisterofMerciless back here again. Man do I miss the days when he'd chart everything on the now defunct Needlepoint website.

The only album on my list that was touched was the Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult album, which is cool, but the best song is still To Necromancy... :tongue:

I think I noticed that things that were deflowered by someone earlier in the challenge weren't counted for people who reviewed the same release later in the challenge. Zodi's count he gave me was higher than what was here, and I noticed his reviews for the One Master tape and the Blood Red Fog/Verge split weren't counted toward his total because he posted both after I had posted mine.
