So before I get jumped on for not investing in a good system and playing actual albums though it, I've got a great sounding vintage Hi-Fi setup that's been in the family for awhile...and it's 6000 miles away.

Meanwhile I travel a lot and I've got space considerations so playing music off a hard drive or MP3 player is just a reality. I blew out my laptops crappy built in speakers about as soon as I bought it though...Not asking for the world, just looking for something pretty portable and good and nice and loud in at least a small room without sounding like complete and total garbage, preferably under a hundred bucks but I'd be willing to go a little over if it's quality. Suggestions?

Not really portable but this:

I still see them in Sony outlets here in Mexico, or you could try in other places.
The main problem? They are heay as fuck. I mean, they are really (really) small satellites attached to a subwoofer that is not that big, but really heavy.
They look nice too.

These are very good for the size and price. Way way way better than laptop speakers.

The Sony set would be pretty nice but I really like that X-Mini speaker, that's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for...I think I'll pick up a couple of those with my next amazon order!

Back when I used to work security, I would bring these to work with me every night. The sound quality is absolutely incredible, not hollow or tinny like some portables.
I have since given them to my brother and am now sad. :(

The X-Mini works fine in most cases. Sound quality is not the best, but way better than laptop speakers and good enough for general purpose use anyway.
