What's the most thoroughly ignorant thing you've heard a religious person say?

One day I happened to be singing to myself "Sheep go to Heaven, Goats go to Hell" by Cake. My sister told me that she had just learned that in Religious Education class. I asked her to explain. According to her teacher, goats go to hell because they butt in while Christians are praying and sheep go to heaven because they say "baa", which sounds like "pa", by which they mean father; i.e. god. Wow! I knew religious people were kind of goofy, but goddamn!

Please share your stories.

@Erotetic; I dislike religious hokum just as much as the next guy, but implying that religious people are more likely to spout stupidity than the average person is something I find to be rather silly. If anything, we all say ridiculous stuff once in a while; the only differences are the kind of things we say and the frequency with which we spit them.

I'm not saying religious people have a monopoly on stupidity. This is just a discussion on the ignorance that religion sometimes breeds.

I get that. I was just playing devil's advocate, for the sake of balance.

OK you've got me. When I refer to religious people as being goofy I overgeneralised. There are plenty of perfectly reasonable religious people. However this thread is dedicated to the contingent of religious people who are ignorant morons. Can we focus on them from here on In?

Not really. If you're religious then you're less reasonable than a non-religious person in at least one glaring respect. The best you can hope for is this is the only way that you're not reasonable. But if you take it seriously, it's hard to see how you could possibly keep it from spilling into other areas as well.

Anyways, on topic, here is a blog that posts a lot of particularly dumb religious stuff, from a USA-politics standpoint.

My mother once said that I have to clean my room. Little did she realize that I'm a nihilist individual who does not believe in her laughable christian delusions of order! That naive religious sheep! Naturally I burned down the garden shed that night.

I've read the Koran (personally I think it's better than the Old Testament). There's nothing about plate tectonics contained within. How strange.

I used to have a business in a building I shared with a bookshop. I'm not sure if the owner was religious or not, but you may choose to believe so for the purposes of this thread. I quite liked her, she seemed pleasant and reasonable until we had the following conversation:

*I spot a pile of books in the bin. As a bookshop owner, I expected her to respect and preserve printed books, them being a dying format so to speak.

Me: "How come you're throwing these away? Some of them look perfectly intact..."
Her: "They're a bit scruffy, we've got other copies of all those on the shelves."
Me: "You could donate them to a charity shop or something..."
Her: "We never donate books to charity shops. If a customer sees a book in there, they won't come and buy it from us. We'd rather take them out of circulation."
Me: (open-mouthed) "....."

Fortunately a customer came in and saved me from having to continue the conversation. I couldn't believe she would rather destroy books than donate them to charity, just for the sake of a few pennies profit.

Destroying perfectly good products to keep demand up is a common business practice. Not just books, also food and clothes and countless other things. Not that this makes it any less despicable.

I watched about 5 minutes of some program discussing whether or not there was a hell and I think in particular they were discussing whether it was a physical or metaphysical place. This Christian lady's whole argument for there being a physical hell was "it says so in the Bible". There were some good questions from the audience (which escape me at the moment), but her responses were always "no, because in the Bible..." I had to switch the TV off.

My best friend is very religious and a few things- he was having a "youtube war" with an atheist, and saying something like "yeah, figures he doesnt comment back", then said he hates atheists. He was growing really concerned when the Pope resigned due to some prophecy, where apparently the current one is the last one. Supposedly all the things have come true and he told me I should read/watch the stuf on it. I REALLY wanted to tell him something to the effect that maybe he resigned due to gay priests and child abuse.
Recently, it was announced that we may have found some kind of cure for a cancer, or something similar...on facebook, he posted it, and added "with a little help from God". Yeah, not the doctors/scientists.

But...... God created cancer. Didn't he? Kind of a dick move to hold the cure for himself.

The thread's name is "Ignorant things said by religious people". My post fits just fine here, Froggo.

Ehm. Nope.

It's a shame that most things religious people say to back up the credibility of their religion are so easy to refute... It's a really interesting subject of discussion, but the discussion itself is almost never any good.

Like all the hateful things religious people say to other people and one of the main teachings of most if not all major religions is that we should all love one another? I grew up in one of the most religious cities in Illinois if not the country and I was appalled at how two faced and hypocritical the people could be, hell in the church I went to we even had a pastor that was cheating on his wife...

I'm an atheist, but really, this militant atheist thing is getting old. It's not that hard to ignore Christians you know, just leave them be. Trust me, there are other things to be more concerned about in this life, like kicking doors and hitting your girlfriend when the store is out of Cheetos Cheddar Jalapeno deliciousness for example. Fuck that asshole for not re-stocking is all I am saying.

No, "proving" in this case means empirically attesting that it actually happened. A miracle is something that can not explained with science, but it could still be scientifically aknowledged. There are people like James Randi who make a living disproving "miracles" by showing that they can in fact be explained. The One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge promises one million dollar to anyone who can, under controlled conditions, prove that something happened that science can not explain. Of course nobody won yet.

OK, let's get this thread on some sort of track. First of all, the original idea is not stupid things religious people say, it's stupid things religious people say because of their religion. To horribly misquote Hitchens to the point of mangling the quote beyond recognition, it takes religion for smart people to start saying really stupid things. And yes, atheism is free game, if the stuff said stems from that atheism, particularly.

I must comment on waiguoren's post, though... I still, after all these years, fail to see the mentioned "militant atheism" around. If you mean the Reddit circle-jerks, or the lame preaches to their own choir called "freethinkers", there's very little actual militant character about them. They are more like failed little secular bitches. Since they essentially fail to actually do anything about things. A few rather lame ads on the sides of buses in a couple of major cities seems to count as "militant" these days, which is an insult to the word itself. Or is it the handful of extremely stupid lawsuits against the ten commandments in the USA? Hardly "militant" in my eyes.

I may have mentioned it earlier at some point, but I got fed up with the local school a few years back, when they repeatedly failed to excuse my atheist kids from religious functions, and if they did manage such an exception, the children invariably ended up in a bleak classroom doing extra maths or something, almost as a punishment. Which is not what it should be. What did I do? I let the school know about it every time, but politely, as is my habit in the real world. But I also called the ministry of education, found the right civil servant, and asked about the rules for founding and financing a private school. Because I know for a fact that it there was a strictly secular private school in the Helsinki area, it would be filled to the brim within two days of opening, and in addition to a few goofy Steiner schools and such, the only private schools in Finland are christian clusterfucks, about 15 to 20 of them. If I ever have the time and the money for that, it could well become my hobby to set up such an institution. Too bad my own kids will be way past school age at that point, though.
