I've been searching for a few weeks to find some good thrash, death bands from Africa. And everytime I find one or two, they've really bad reviews here on MA, so I didn't bother checking them out.

There are no good bands from Africa. Sorry to have to break it to you.

I like Myrath who are a prog metal band from Tunisia. They have some folky aspects as well.

John is somewhat right even though he's being sarcastic :) Egypt has some good bands. Check out Scarab (formerly known as Hate Suffocation, yes lame name). I've seen them live a couple of times at various fests.

There are 129 bands listed from South Africa alone. I havent heard of very many of them (so I don't know which specific ones to reccomend) but the odds are there is at least one or two of them from down there that are decent, at least.

Due to the police-state mentality and strict Islamic culture, I would think it would be very hard for a metal scene to thrive in the northern and central African countries. But I give definate props to the bands from there who try to persevere in spite of the odds. Haven't really heard of too many bands from there aside from the occasional name-drop.

'Absence of Light' is a gay name for a band, honestly. I find it awkward that he rules out bands playing metalcore/deathcore/melodeath, but calls a melodeath band, with an unoriginal name, unique.

Madagascar had a thrash scene apparently. The more you know, right?

Ya'll remember that very popular feature done by several magazines on the Botswana metal scene? If not, here's the link:

Voice of Destruction (South Africa) is OK.

Not thrash nor death, but Namibia’s Arcana XXII is great.

You might like Threatening from Uganda: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRuBCntvhvA

But you posted in the wrong subforum, try "Recommendation Central".

Metal bands, not so much :P

Some people might be interested in this piece of heavy 70s psychedelia from Nigeria though.

Agreed about Crow Black Sky. Myrath and Vielikan from Tunisia are both Progressive bands, the latter being more deathly. They are modern sounding but add a bit of oriental touches to their sound.

Balyios, also South African does a folk metal thing but it is more Euro flavored than I would have preferred.

True African folk metal that I have heard is this song, "Tribes Of The Underground" from Uganda's Vale of Amonition;
http://valeofamonition.bandcamp.com/tra ... nderground

South Africa also has a mildly interesting power metal band called Strident;

That Vale of Amonition song rules. Balyios' album was quite magnificent too!

If south africa counts, i like Seether. But they have a kind of grung-ey sound, not very metal but still heavy.

I highly doubt that most people on this forum would consider them to be any form of heavy metal. However, they're the only African band that I can think of (and I'd prefer not to think of them).

The few metal bands I've heard from Africa were quite generic and mediocre, although I've only heard about 5-10.

There is alot of great non metal stuff from africa though, like funk, afrobeat and others.
Here are a few releases I could easily highly recommend:

I recommend Umtakati. Old school death metal with tribal drum patterns.
