I need to buy some new speakers for my computer and I don't know how to choose them. I listen to Metal (obviously) and similar genres, but also Rock and Punk, so I was wondering what I should look for in speakers to have the best experience listening to this kind of music. I figured I'd ask what you guys here use for listening to music?

2.1 or 5.1?

What specs are the most important?

No point in 5.1 for music unless you're listening to the extremely small subset of music that was ever mixed for it and released on SACD or whatever. I'll let the audiophile nerds answer the other parts of your question, though.

First tell us about the rest of your setup. Source? Amp?

Personally, I use a pair of JBL LSR 305s along with the 310s subwoofer. The reason for that choice was simply because that line is really cheap, but quite good (in terms of accuracy to the source; I realize nearly every marketer ever claims this but I promise it's true this time). To echo some of the above sentiments, 5.1 is pretty much completely useless for music (and most applications other than film really). It also costs much much more to have a 5.1 setup that's not horrid, so avoid that. Also you should avoid anything marketed as "computer speakers" and the like. That kind of stuff is basically never built with audio quality in mind. You presumably want bookshelf speakers (i.e. the kind of speakers that look like bricks with a tweeter and woofer) since you likely aren't looking for anything massive in size.

But yeah like Expendience said, what's your current audio situation?

I sadly short-circuited my Dennon amp recently and it would have been more expensive to repair than I paid for it in the first place, so I'm running through the Sherwood A/V receiver for the time being. Technics turntable (which sits on a granite slab) into a Cambridge Audio phono preamp. NAD cd player. Akai casette player. 2 Wharfdale diamond speakers up on dedicated speaker stands and a 15 inch sub.

On the computer I'm using my studio monitors - 6 inch powered Mackies.

While I'm sure folks here might have some great recommendations, it certainly wouldn't hurt to ask this same question at a board of audio enthusiasts and specialists. This community for example, is great. The audio world is large, and full of bias, snake oil, and misinformation.

You also missed the most important detail for anybody to help you - a budget. For music you will want 2.0 or 2.1. The inclusion of a subwoofer depends on your available space, listening preferences, and budget.

I do my listening on a pair of BMR Philharmonitors.

I don't use a sub, though one day I might add one. I really don't want to bother with a subwoofer until I'm ready to bother with taking measurements and EQing the bass. One night I experimented putting my home-theater sub with my BMR's and it hurt the sound more than it helped. Subwoofers can be a tricky beast.

I'm hardly an audiophile, so I make do with the convenience of my laptop speakers. Whenever I feel like hearing bass or more nuanced sounds, I'll use a pair of Koss UR-40 headphones. Couldn't tell you if they're meant for metal or not, but they work for me.

If you're going to listen to only music, I would go with the 2.1.
I use a Sony MHC-NX1 in my computer and a Logitech Z5500 in the living room:

I use Sennheiser HD-650 as headphones, they are very nice for a detailed and immersive hifi listening experience.
I don't have a hifi sound system anymore and instead use studio monitors (Yamaha HS-7) for non-headphone listening so I can get used to their reference sound for mixing my own stuff. I only listen to my absolute favorites on the Yamahas though, which I think have the perfect production as well as the great musicianship I'm trying to achieve myself one day. Recently that was Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion, Bruce Dickinson - The Chemical Wedding and Black Sabbath - Master of Reality. Listening to new stuff always happens via headphones.

This. I only use the two main stereo speakers and subs for music, unless it's a multi-channel track from a DVD or BD.

Oh and "computer speakers" sound like absolute arse. They never crossover the sub frequencies properly, so you end up with all sorts of weird "whoomph" noise coming from the sub when it tries to replicate frequencies far above what it's supposed to. Just get a good amplifier with an active sub and quality speakers and plug it into the computer.

This stereo kicks so much ass when I listen to stoner metal on it. I really recommend buying this system.

Computer speakers are the worst. I don't like having to listen to cd's with my cd-rom drive even while using headphones. No matter what equalization you use through Winamp, it still sounds tiny. No bass reflex at all. Until today I was only listening to records through my old Sony amplifier and big speakers, but then I bought a cd player to run through the amp as well. Now if anything, I am getting too much bottom end. I guess I can't be too mad cause I only paid 8 dollars for the disc player which is also dvd player.

I usually listen to my music with an old CD player with basic mobile phone earphones.

The no-name speakers and the astonishingly powerful sub at my PC (so a standard 2.1 setup). I just max out the sub volume and fuck about with the EQ on Winamp until I get it just right.

A speaker/ my Sennheiser HD201 headphones (Metallica used these in their Live in Antarctica video which was a real surprise because they are cheap as heck, but have a really good sound quality though) and by PC or this old Walkman I have.

I've got a 10 year old set of Sennheiser PX-100 that are still going strong.

Genius Cavimanus headphones which I bought several years ago. Pretty good sound quality with amazing bass, though wearing headphones all the time feels like shit. I'd use my Logitech speakers (don't remember the model name) but my computer freaks out when I plug in my sound card, possibly because of a weak PSU.

At home or on the run I use the Chord Mojo, the best audio device I've ever heard or owned personally, paired with the FiiO X5 2nd Gen:
