I never noticed the piss trail until you mentioned it. I didn't want to become a full-on hipster by getting Ray-Ban Clubmasters, so I got a similar version. Anthony Fantano is probably my least favourite music reviewer.

Yeah with his username and taste I always assumed Master_of_Thrash looked like a young Ryan Waste or something. Couldn't have been more wrong.

Doing a bit of Antarctic exploration

For some reason I assumed Master_of_Thrash was white. Same with Napalm_Satan. I think my mental image of metal fans is that they still all look like the spellbound guys in Candlemass' "Bewitched" video, the point in time when that stereotype became outdated flew right past me.

For fuck's sake, thrash isn't the only subgenre I like!

I thought N_S was white, too, and I still see him as white even though he has posted a picture. But, I also thought that people would never have guessed what I look like. I knew everyone pictured me as this drunken 80's style thrasher, but that's far from the case. I could never look like a typical metalhead even if I tried (which I did, but gave up on very quickly).

It just seems to be what I see you talking about I suppose. That and your initial reaction to Summoning gave me the pudgy, greasy longhair impression.

I was hit by the biggest curveball when I first listened to Summoning. I wasn't expecting anything like that. I've changed my opinion on them with more listens of LMHSYF.

I mean, outside of Weezer, metal is the absolute whitest music that ever existed so yeah.

That said, I recall MoT mentioning something about growing up in a household with Pakistani/Indian/something along those lines parents so I gathered he wasn't. NS, well, his handle's initials are NS so ya know.

The city I currently live in has a lot of Pakistani and Indian people, but I'm Arab.

I never thought of metal in the context of race, but that could be because I haven't made any observations on the matter.

Well, genres like grunge, alt rock, country/country pop, classical, opera etc. still exist so... I mean in the very early days you could probably say that, but it seems to me its been pretty big in Latin America for example since 80s. I used to know a fair amount of Latino metalheads as well as Native metalheads. I get people's point and definitely the genre is pretty white no doubt, but I also think there's quite a bit of overlooking that happens that maintains that image too even when it might not be as accurate (and maybe a factor in that is the strong influence of romanticizing certain eras of European history, certain scenes etc. that gives that image).

Well of course there are metalheads of all sorts of backgrounds globally. It just seems to be a very white genre in countries with white people. It does make a lot of sense, though, considering the fascination with European history/folklore/paganism that pervades much of metal even outside of Europe itself.

I think part of it comes from its status as an outsider/counterculture genre. Minorities in majority-white countries like the US and Europe are already outsiders to some extent by dint of their race, and don't need to go looking for countercultures to relate to. Their own regular culture is already essentially a counterculture. In countries where those races are the majority, like hispanics in South and Central America, and Asians in Asia, metal is much bigger.

One of those moments where I don't know whether to respond or let things go since I was originally just making a quick observation and not looking to open up a big discussion and steer things off topic. Anyway, I wasn't just talking about metalheads being from all sorts of backgrounds globally, obviously that's true. But that even historically its never been as white as its being implied, especially looking at thrash and death metal. I guess I'm just thinking I've noticed its easy to pass over bands and musicians that historically speaking were significant or otherwise fairly well-known whether from "white countries" or not to varying degrees like Slayer, Sarcofago, Suicidal Tendencies, Krisiun, Death Angel etc. etc. Considering the fairly marked Latino influence (not in reference to all the bands I've mentioned since not all are Latino) on North American metal (and needless to say the Latin American scene, haha) basically from the 80s onwards it just seems a bit weird to act like we're all about to have a big hoedown or something Especially with respect to American thrash/crossover and death metal, it seems silly to ignore.

every hispanic/latin american ive met in the netherlands listens to metal. As for other minorities ive met more than a couple who listen to metal but its really only rare among black people here and just uncommon for people with a background of an islamic majority country.

Anyway I don't mean to gloss over the fact that there have been plenty of great non-white musicians in metal bands (and non-white fans, to boot!), but they're still underrepresented in the scene. It's sorta like the conversation about women in video game development. Are there lots of them, and great ones who've made important contributions? Yeah, absolutely, but they're also underrepresented likely due to all of the various barriers to entry. More inclusiveness would be great.
