Ten years ago, on July 7th, 2002, Amorphis was added to the Archives, marking the birth of Morrigan and Hellblazer's unholy spawn, Encyclopaedia Metallum. Let us rejoice, reminisce and extend our gratification for the many years of our lives we have spent here, the knowledge it has given us, and what it has done for the internet metal world as a whole.

Thank you Morri and HB and cheers to another ten years. :metal:

<3

I lurked these forums for quite a while before actually joining them. Thanks to them, I have gotten many laughs, many recommendations, and many "life-lessons" along the way. Hell, I even added Morrigan and HB to the list of "Thank-you" for Eternium's demo cover.

Thank you for the memories and dedication.

Truly the best site in existence, with the best and most memorable users of any board I frequent. Cheers!

But they're all commies.

Anyway, yeah this site has been most helpful to me for the past couple years, I still feel stupid for not knowing about the boards sooner. Cheers.

Thank you, MA. You've led me to so many great bands, introduced me to so many great people (and a few crappy ones too!), and given me a place where I could dump my big-ass review of Elvenefris. :) And most of all, thanks for showing up before Spirit of Metal on the Google search when I type in a band's name.

I hope to be having a similar milestone-centric conversation 20 years from now, when we can all huddle around the e-campfire and complain about how Slipknot finally got in the database for their LLN-inspired Mutiilation clone album, and how we remembered a time when there were nine different subforums instead of 23...it'll be nice. Hopefully there will even be some MA children around by that time!

I doubt there will be more subforums. Things seem pretty streamlined right now. At worst, the Tavern will go the way of the Symposium.

Nah, the Tavern is great to shoot the shit and really get a feel for what the people are like. Plus it's useful for the newbies who actually bother to look around before posting their WHY IS BTBAM NOT HERE!!? IS METL! Threads in Metal Discussion.

I've seen mention of the Symposium before, but it was before my time. What was it?

And thank you MA, you've been quite a help throughout my more recent musical journey, I wouldn't listen to half the bands I do now if it hadn't been for Rec Central \m/

Ok it's on, race for the first MA child begins now!

I'm actually surprised the site has only been around for 10 years, I've been here for like 6, and I'm kind of shocked to know I joined when it was still so young. Oh well, hooray for the best site on the internet.

@Clayman: The Symposium was the Taverns Pseudo-intellectual cousin. Many we just can't know discussions were had. Most of the threads turned to shit pretty quickly. The Mods ultimately decided to shut it down (I vaguely remember that it started as an April Fools joke but they decided they liked not having to moderate that misguided cesspool)

Well thanks for the Encyclopedia and the forums. And thanks to the mods for keeping this place neat.

The Metal Archives. I haven't been here nearly as long as some, and definitely not long enough. I'm not sure I'd ever want to leave. I've frequented the website for years (signed up pretty much the first day I stumbled across the place, I think) and I've met a lot of good people, even if they haven't considered me too valuable back haha, but I appreciate the way this place has made me grow as both a metal fan and a person. Here's to ten more years!

I get to see the importance of this site clearly, because although I have been a metalhead for too many years to count, after moving from the US I lost touch; I had no contact with any form of metal underground. The forums have helped me feel closer to metal culture again and of course everything feels so friendly here with many, many worthwhile posters. Here's to another 10!

Only got me beaten by a little bit. The amazing thing to think about was that I was 14 when I joined up here, I actually predate a good amount of the currently important people.

Enough about me (for a change), this is a fantastic site and easily one of my favorite places in all of the internet. Plus it's kinda the reason I started writing as a hobby so there's that and all. Damn... still talking about myself. I LOVE YOU METAL ARCHIVES.

I'll have to credit the majority of my music collection to being because of this site, either directly through recommendations and the ravings of Ultra_Boris or indirectly through the passing mention of a band in a positive light. Also, thank you MA for making me so obsessed with funeral doom.

So I've been here for over six of the past ten years, and have seen the site grow. I'm sure many here will bring up the good ol' days, but ten years from now we may just realize that the good ol days are here and now. Version 2 has made the site better than it has ever been, with the new features allowing for even better information on bands, genres, members, etc.

Ten years from now could bring about a whole lot more. I think within ten years the site will see the 100,000th and 150,000th band added. Bands from countries currently not represented on the website will have been added. Afghanistan, Yemen, North Korea, Mali, Chad... Conversely I think Puerto Rico will not be listed as a "country" since I think by then it'll become the 51st state. Version 3 might be released... but not until well after Bethesda releases The Elder Scrolls VI.

I think a ten year anniversary is all well and good... but a grand celebration ought to be withheld until next July for the 11 year anniversary.

I guess it's technically three more days until the anniversary proper, but since the topic has been made, cheers to everyone who's made this site possible (especially the devs). You guys rule, and if I could only visit one site on the Internet, it would almost surely be this one. \m/

Been registered here for about 4 years, 6 since I discovered it.
Guess I wasted a fuckload of time here, but it was worth it.

Thanks for all the cool and underrated bands I've found through the recommendation threads. Probably would have been a good 20 years before I found 'em, plus MA filters out all the crappy, half-rate bands that you always encounter when searching alone. Here's to a further 10 years and another 10 after that.

Gotta give my respects to the MA. I was actually told about this site back in '04 when I used to post on the AOL metal boards (twas a 13 year old tyke at the time).
Anyway I've been using the site ever since, and have been a registered member since '06. It no doubt has introduced me to a slew of new bands and artsts, as well as different genres I've grown to love.

So yeah, happy birthday Encyclopaedia Metallum (and America!, while I'm at it)

Ten years, huh? I've only been on here for four, but it's still pretty cool that the Archives has been running for that long. I would have to thank it greatly for helping me with my taste and recommending me awesome music. I also have to thank it for helping me outgrow my old school elitism and metal apologist phases, since it was made quite clear that people like those were idiots and would be dealt with quickly. But I'm sidetracking. Here's to another ten.

I think Vengeance is a pretty respected dude and if he wanted he could probably be a mod. Then again , I'm completely talking out of my ass and I have no idea what secret and unspeakable rites are involved in the transformation from regular human being to MOD.

Bro, that was hilarious. That response would have been perfect if, instead of Cthulhu, you used a picture of, you know, a Nightgaunt. Also, I'd be willing to be you anything that Hellblazer doesn't look that intense haha, but only Tony really knows.

 I know! But all the nightgaunt photos didn't link! I thought that the first may be....well oddly scandalous, but the that was the only Hellblazer pic that was badass and it had a lady in it....

Kermit and I dress almost entirely the same.
