I'm in remission re Games Workshop. Im going to sell a bunch of my 40k stuff as the rules are justa total mess at the moment. Moved on to historicals which are great but sadly dont have the same player base.

All my wargaming buddies are playing 40K and enjoying it, but they have a pretty cutthroat/WAAC environment, don't play with fully painted armies etc. The fantasy group we're starting up are a couple of those guys, me (the old fantasy gamer), a friend who's new to warhammer (though he's played skirmish games before) and a friend who used to play 40K with the other guys before all the OP beardiness got to him and he lost his enjoyment of the game because everything was about awesome combos and not cool models and themes.

So we're starting warhammer fantasy up with the very explicit agreement of no power play, we'll bend rules/army composition as we see fit (we're going with the "old" 8th edition rules as a base), painted armies and just really focus on the "have fun with your buddies" part. I know that it's not everyone who has a stable gaming group, but can't you just house rule stuff to your liking if you want to play 40K with some friends?

Really looking forward to rolling some dice again. Painting chaos ogres like a motherfucker right now!

My problem with my 40k group is that they are all tourament players. So the whole objective for them is to find ways to break the meta game in terms of list exploits. That stopped being fun - I was always bringing a knife to a gun fight every time I showed up. The way 6th and 7th ed works just allows them so much scope to do stupid shit that they are testing for competitive events. The way list construction works with stacking detatchments and suplimentary rules gets really hard to follow if like me you are just adding flyers to 5th ed lists. So when we post the weekly roster its always "testing list for next tournament, bring your hardest list" and I just cbf keeping up with it anymore.

One of the things I like about playing historicals is that the silliness is curtailed by the setting. I have had a lot of fun with Bolt Action and won best Axis general 3 tournaments in a row with my Waffen SS army, so must be doing something right.

I miss the days of simpler miniature games. Did anyone play the original Mage Knight game before Wizkids tanked?

Nice, Ive read a lot of good stuff about historicals, but I really like the fantasy aspect of warhammer and dont have time/enegy/money/gaming buddies for several systems.

I really hope our focus on fun and soft lists will prevail, I hate the tournament mindset and the focus on combos, special rules and lists crammed with as much broken stuff as possible.

Just ordered
D&D 5e Monster Manual
D&D 5e DM manual
D&D 5e Volo's Guide to Monster

I'd like to perhaps start DMing in 2017 so I need to get ready. $107 for all 3 with free shipping, good deal.

A couple days ago I received my starter pack from Valleo and the doll for my big, gay barbarian woman (ordered from The War Store). I haven't owned paints for over 20 years. I feel like the entire interim was an utterly wasted, desolate world of garbage. Oh wait, no, that's Trump's America.

To any model painters, what sort of lighting situation do you use? I'm fixing to buy a current iteration of those desk lamps incorporating a magnifying glass, similar to the one I had back in the gloomy, dim woods known as the early 90s.

I have 2 daylight lamps on either side of where I sit. They are great as you can mix colours accurately without getting stange blue or yellow tinting from either fkourescent or incandescent lighting. Also handy for taking photos in my light box.

Yeah, I can't take good photos of my dudes with just my desk lamp, but for painting I find it works fine.

Daylight lamps? That's a good idea. I'd forgotten about the color inaccuracies.* Are yours floor lights or on the table?

*At work, the head of the paint shop and the head of facilities have repeatedly locked horns over the replacement of the shop lighting. In an effort to go green, the company has been swapping all the lamps in its variety of overhead fixtures. The paint shop head described the outcome of mixing paint under the new light as "hilariously bad." Periodically, a hopeful scissor lift shows up at the shop door with new lamps only to be firmly sent on its awkward, crawling way whence it came.

Bad pic, especially the lightning, but here's what I've painted so far since my glorious return to Warhammer. 3 converted Chaos Ogres of Nurgle and a converted Chaos Warrior of Nurgle (based on a plastic Plaguebearer)

The newest Thousand Sons reveal might re-ignite my interest in W40k. Some sick models with what I hope will be some cool new rules.

Man, yeah, the Thousand Sons have needed some love for a good while now. The fuckin Ahriman mold dated back to second edition! The new Exalted Sorcerer models in particular are amazing. Not sure how much I like the Magnus model actually AS Magnus, but it's definitely a rad model for a Tzeentch daemon prince.

Joe Dever, the author of the Lone Wolf fantasy gamebooks (similar to Sorcery! and Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, with its own unique concepts and mechanics), has passed away today. :( RIP. Loved those books growing up!

The books have been adapted to browser games for free (with the author's blessing) at Project Aon, and most are available (with new ones being made available progressively) as 100% faithful adaptations on Android. I've been replaying them sometimes during long commutes.

There's also a Steam/Android game adaptation that's a bit different (not a straight book port but a separate, new story), but I haven't played it yet.

My favourite of the series growing up was The Prisoners of Time. I played all the French translations as a kid.

Hoooolllllyy shit. I had no clue this was a thing. I 'played(???)' the shit out of the Lone Wolf books when I was a lad and have recently been thinking of trying to find not ruined copies. Wow. RIP free time.

I'm starting a new campaign with friends of mine (all 20 somethings) and it will be pretty cool. The DM insisted on using 3.5 though and this kinda sucks since it's more complex and they're all noobs and I don't have the books (I guess I'll buy the handbook) but eh, it will rule anyway. We're 6 players and my buddy Guillaume and I are gonna black skinned religious brothers who went on a religious mission on another continent. They're basically haitians noble warriors! I'm the Paladin (surprise?) and he's the cleric.

The rest of the party is:
-A Tabaxi (reskinned for 3.5) rogue played by my good friend Pascal
-Half elf druid played by Guillaume's gf
-A wild elf ranger with 7 of INT played by my friend Jesse
-Elf wizard played by a guy I met online who seems cool

We had a meeting last night and we did our characters. It was cool! First game will be Sunday. The story we've been told is that we're all escorting a gnome mage who managed to replicate gold. A big bank paid us to retrieve him alive and bring him to them. We'll start the game with him already captured and we need to embark on a boat to go to the other side of this sea to the bank.

________

My game with my wizard Elvira was canceled this weekend :( I will not play her until 2017. I have one game left with Solstron though and I bought the Paladin spell cards this weekend!

Oh here's my guy! (sorry large pic)

I know no one cares about my First Edition meanderings but this'll serve as a bump to the thread anyway
Finished up the old Role Aids module "The Keep" based on the movie of the same name and now going into "Return to White Plume Mountain" which may not actually be first edition but is being incorporated into our game anyway.

Our party has dissipated after the initial excitement of playing the game fresh, but we're gathering on NYE to start the campaign drafted by my friend Matt. There's going to at least be 5 of us, hopefully up to 10, and Matt's idea of good storytelling usually results in meandering lulz-fests with ample action.

Here's to hoping Khargon the Half-Orc Fighter finally finds that bastard who wiped out his squad from years back.

Our Warhammer group is up and running, and we've played a few 500 pts games, very small lists when playing an elite army like me. We've already had small issues with power gaming, but it seems like we can handle it through discussions about lists building and power level. It's really funny playing again, though I'm really looking forward to both messing around with bigger armies and fully painted units.

In other board game related news my girlfriend got me Pandemic Legacy for Christmas so that's gonna be awesome.

All I care about is what happens to Elvira!?!

The reptile section of the pet store had the top half of an alligator skull (more the size of a caiman), so I bought it for my friend to add to his terrain collection. Should work pretty well as a dragon skull for Warhammer or RPG landscaping or just be .. you know .. a cool looking skull. I bought a human skull (death by blunt force trauma to the back of the head, claw hammer?) for myself and put it on the mantle with the plants.

I failed a balance check when the boat was getting boarded by goblins lol. We almost got all killed in the first session!

Elvira will be back in 2-3 weeks, I think. The campaign is on hold due to the DM traveling back home to Manitoba and one of the players being in Florida! I'd be interested in hearing some of you guys' tabletop RPG stories though.

I need to actually play for that to happen. :( I'll be meeting with my DM soon for a one-on-one session part character building solo skirmish, part tutorial, since I never got a proper one. We'll work on backstory and get my character sorted, since the creation was a rush job. That will probably be pretty cool.

That's what happens when you get on The Boat in D&D. When players see a body of water, they should run screaming away from it, because whatever's in there, there's a lot of them and they all hate you.

My friend Matt has loaded his adventure with a ton of wrestling jokes. This only enhanced my friend Ronnie's character, a dwarven bard called Glub McTough, as they proceeded to cast Vicious Mockery and dig us into a whole hell of a lot of trouble the moment our quest began.

Four hours (and a bitching saxophone solo) later, we destroyed a wizard's staff and freed the soul of Prince Shane's departed friend en route to the first of several castles that may (or may not) be under the rule of Hun-Tor, bastard heir to the throne of King Vince, ruler of Parts Unknown, and kidnapper of Princess Stephanie.

Yeah, me and the OH LOVE this game. My mate bought it for us for Christmas 2yrs ago and we've hooked multiple other people on it, bought enough sets and expansions etc. for 6 players and both of us are about equal (which makes a nice change!).

I paint models: y'know how I said I was D&D5e champion? Well, I'm also 'Large Monster' Painting champion thanks to this dude:

Spoiler: show
Sorry it's huge: I culled it from Facebook and it usually works on the rabbit forum but hasn't worked here. I don't suppose this site's BB code supports height/width editing in-tag, does it?

ImageGW metal Balrog (plastic wings) with High Elf Fire Phoenix/Bird Thing (new Warhammer stuff) head, greenstuffed hand flames (not visible in this view) instead of sword. His original intended function was the Unbound Daemon to my Daemonhost in (full 54mm scale) Inquisitor.

Painting is the best bit about the hobby for me. We're currently running a Necromunda campaign and I rekon I'll have the only painted force soon :S Although I can't be that bad at it as the OH, who hates other people using his models etc., asked me to paint his Mordheim stuff for him and it was better than when he asked me to marry him. True romance ;P They were the Warhammer Quest adventurers so had to be painted just like their card pictures, and I reckon I did an OK job (no pics to hand, sorry).

Been playing a 1st ed. AD&D campaign for over 2 years now
Seems to be winding down
We may be switiching to Dungeon Crawl Classics
It has much of the same look and spirit as 1st ed. but with some new rules and mechanics. Looks interesting!

Finally started my 5e campaign today, just a pretty basic "slave escape" start. Pirates attacked our slave ship, we were able to escape in the confusion and help the pirates defeat the slavers, whereupon the grateful pirates set us down on the nearest bit of land. Then we had a short adventure in an abandoned castle where we fought some living statues (and the ranger, who has yet to hit anything, actually managed to HIT ME WITH AN ARROW INSTEAD OF THE STATUE), and then progressed to the next part where we called it a night.

Pretty cool so far! I hadn't played in ages, and one girl hadn't ever played any kind of RPG, but the three other people are veterans (including the DM), so it's a good mix of experience levels. 5e is a good system for the kind of thing we want: casual, with a focus on role playing.

Cracked the freshness seal of my new Vallejo basics paint set yesterday. That was really fun. Good materials make hobbies better! I won't be posting pictures since a) my phone sucks, and b) I suck, but the good news is that I don't suck nearly as badly as I thought I did. I have some spare minis from my abandoned Wiz War project, and I'm just throwing paint around anyway. Good way to spend a few weekend hours, and a great way to work up to my half-orc's mini. Pretty crazy how exciting doing fun things can be, even when it's just sitting in one place squinting at something ridiculously small.

Dude, I really want to get good enough to paint some of these box game figures. The sculpts for The Others are outstanding.
