Eh..... Nap..... Tim Burton's still alive.

Yeah, I guess, but it doesn't seem to affect me nearly as much as you. I quickly got accostumed to the idea of ex-members of TON playing in a sludgy metal band in the vein of AIC (and especially so considering how good Heaven is Gone is).

So I went to the Fates Warning gig anyway and it actually was fun and good except for a tiny detail: They did not play a single number from Spectre or Awaken... What the actual fuck?

I've seen a couple of live videos of Alder attempting material from AtG/TSW and what I remember was pretty painful. It's understandable, and in fact probably for the greater good, if he, or indeed anyone who has the misfortune of not being John Arch, refrains from covering the Arch-era material.

I wish I had known that in advance. Could have saved me time and money. :(

I don't think it would be impossible for someone else to sing those songs, I just think that Alder does a really fucking terrible job on them... for instance, a drunken metalhead karaoke version of 'The Apparition' would still be better than Alder's version.

About the whole "Alder performing Arch songs"..... He can't perform them. And he shouldn't try. End of story.

Now, as for who could..... I don't really know. This is not out of blind fanboyism or anything, but seriously, I can't for the life of me think about an appropiate vocalist to sing Arch era Fates Warning songs. The delivery and melodies are that unique.

Next time I want to see a band for the first time I'm going to do my homework first. :nono:
Having paid the ticket I would have preferred his version over no version. At least I would have gotten what I thought I paid for even if broken.

This is what Ray Alder sounded like singing John Arch's songs... 23 years ago. Time certainly hasn't helped him.

Agh, that shit is headache inducing. Seriously, I'll never get used to the idea of Alder singing Arch songs. His voice simply isn't suited for them.

That Alder version of "Fata Morgana" was funny. Always painful to hear a singer hit that point of desperation where they start throwing the vocalist's equivalent of wild punches.

Well...the first 1 3/4 tracks of it, at which point I lost interest. Maybe my taste for mediocre-to-bad vocals and uninspiring riffs hasn't been adequately honed.

Wouldn't worry about it too much, I could never really get into At The Gates either. They never grabbed my attention with enough conviction to want to explore their discography further.

In other news, I'm well on my way to acquiring As A Song In The Harvest Of Grief, Foredooming The Hope For Eternity and Like A Blaze Above The Ashes by Forest. I feel they will have a welcome home in my collection.

....and yes, I stand by the use of that many emoticons. When it comes to Forest, emoticons are the more efficient vocabulary as actual verbage tends to become lost behind walls of froth and unintelligible orc bellow.

Forest is legit as fuck. I never listened until the Fish-Man posted a song about a dozen pages back.

I have downloaded the new Doom Challenge 2012 Value Pak and will be listening to it soon! That means you, Frogger. Oh, as it happens, I was just falling asleep listening to My Internal Body (iii) and enjoying it a lot. It was actually reminding me of Maurizio Bianchi in a couple ways. Cool stuff, man. I really like Youth Art Exhibit.

Will do... randomly got onto hearing Korgonthurus for the first time just now and it sounds rather promising.

I am not a fan of the band, really, but holy FUCK Floor improves the band by orders of magnitude. They actually sounded like a metal band again. The best vocalist they've ever had, no question about it. She's really got a good set of ...lungs.

The movie was a bit weird and quite surreal, and I don't really know what to think about it. I guess Tim Burton is rolling in his grave. Also, I think I kinda know one of the guys who wrote the script...

I saw them on Monday, and yes Floor is amazing, I wouldn't have gone to see them if they still had Annete, but couldn't pass up seeing Floor singing their songs. From what I saw of them with Annete on youtube and TV, she couldn't sing live at all, not even her songs, let alone the ones from the Tarja era. Floor's stage presence was immense, and her voice was incredible. I already liked her, but she's gone up in my estimation even more.

The whole thing about releasing it with a film seemed weird to me, what the hell is it even about? Seems pointless, I probably won't get around to watching it for a while.

You shouldn't be surprised. Ray Alder completely lost his high range.

Then again, he wasn't really good on the Arch material when he still had his entire range. Guy tried way too hard and the result was lots of unpleasant shrieking for sake of it. (Just like No Exit actually.)

I wouldn't mind seeing Fates Warning if they'd play more off Perfect Symmetry instead of just their hits. Just tune the guitars down and I'm sure Ray Alder would sound OK over it. I'm also curious wether a new album will actually see the light this year.

It's been quite obvious for a long while already that Holopainen wants to write movie music. Ever since Dark Passion Play, in fact. It's just a natural continuation of that, that's all.

I guess making the music for something like Pirates of the Caribbean would be his dream. Or sumthing.

I too dream of getting paid to cover Oblivion's amazing soundtrack.

And the ironic thing is, his big chance to write movie music turned into a lazy, lifeless turd.

Also I start my first formal job (non-internship) this week, just in time to start saving for my professional license.

Yes and afterwards... start a meth lab, start a bike gang, become king of the wasteland, decide that reality is just a dream and attempt to "wake up" from it... be creative!

I don't know, I'm not really too worried about that. I'm on an internship right now, and I definitely prefer it over school (assuming you were comparing schoolwork vs whatever work someone might have out of college). Of course there will be things I'll have to worry about when I'm out of college that aren't currently present, but I can't imagine there's anything that wouldn't be made worse by trying to put them off.

EDIT: Rereading my post, if I came off as boasting, I hadn't really intended that. I'd just meant that I think I have some idea as to what a job I might have after college may be like.

meh, I like working full time. I worked full time in the summer and enjoyed having the money, and enjoyed the work, even if it was minimum wage. Whereas I fucking hate my course at university, and probably end up spending far more time on it than a full time job would be in a week. I'm looking forward to finishing university and getting a real job on decent money and normal hours (although what the fuck can I do with a philosophy degree?) even if I hate the work, it has to be better than spending like 50-60 hours a week studying, and not enjoying it, and working Saturdays too.

Zelkiiro kingfisher sky are really great. Progressive metal with folk influences, they were formed by an ex member of within temptation, but don't sound like a clone. I've been listening to their first album a lot. Thought I'd let you know about them, seeing as you seem to like female fronted metal.

As long as you don't end up with a job like mine. I work every weekend, most holidays and my current days off are Tuesday and Wednesday... The daily grind gets quite tiresome after a while, but, I guess that's why we have vacations.
