Agreed with Zodijackyl on poor mixing of drinks. Thankfully, when I turned 21, I had a roommate considering work as a bartender and she had a book full of drink recipes. We would go to the liquor store and specifically buy things for certain drinks, and make them exactly according to the recipe. It was much different than when we were 15, and we'd pour 4 ounces of cheap vodka and add 1 oz. of coke. I even bought all kinds of different glasses for their proper drinks.

I am an advocate of cheap liquors, though. I don't see the point of spending a million bucks on alcohol all the time. I enjoy a good whiskey or wine now and then, but most of the time, I drink shitty stuff that's cheap. That's what mixed drinks are all about: having a drink that tastes decent but doesn't break the bank. That's why I buy flavored vodka. Actually, I don't stuff as shitty as I did when I was 16, but still...

Anyway, this thread is upsetting me because I have no alcohol in the house, and now I want a drink.

The riffs themselves aren't extrordinary, just competent like the song writing, but fuck, that sound is absolutely stunning. Like Blasphemophagher they've proven you don't need rawness to play violent metal. The vocals likewise are ridiculously massive. I love it and its not because of the songs themselves haha.

Well, I think when I was underage I appreciated it more, anyway. Even if we just had a case of terrible watery beer that tasted like piss, we'd drink it. For the past decade or so, I've been able to walk into a liquor store or bar and buy anything I wanted, and now I rarely drink. I still know a lot of people who are still drinking heavily, but I guess I lost interest over the years. It's a shame, because drinking was a great talent of mine.

I know it's quite a few pages back, but I'd have to say this describes best how I feel, too. I'm quite indifferent now; I've never actually craved a drink, and don't feel I have to in any particular situation. I don't have anything against it, and can go hard with the best of them, but it's not that exciting; I don't mind going without for months. Though I don't think it's such a shame, really; I mean, I do miss being so young and dumb (drinking age here is 18, so my underage adventures started at 15/16) that those awful cheap cleanskins or premixed spirits made me think I was sophisticated and badass, but I think it's quite normal to become mature enough that you realise it's not that big a deal.

And, of course, you realise that this is very true:
Napero wrote:

Trying to force yourself to consume something that you dislike because you think it's part of growing up is really the most immature thing you can do (though we've all done it; this is the benefit of hindsight). Your tastes may eventually change - I hated beer up until about three years ago, yet now quite enjoy it without having had to do anything silly like make myself drink it till I couldn't taste it anymore - and you can educate your palate if you feel like it, but thinking that you have to or need to drink despite your taste is futile.

On that note, though, I feel tonight might be one of those big sessions for me. I'm off to a pub and then to check out a new 'metal' nightclub and, judging by how those always go, I'm pretty sure I'll end up distracting myself from the music by looking at the pretty blue glow of a G&T.

Haha. What Nappy said, too. However, I still think people may consider trying different things before giving up entirely. I never would have made it through college if I hadn't spent ten years in a row totally shitfaced. None of it with beer though, because I fucking hate beer. I also hate marijuana. Just felt like adding that. Can't fathom why people would want to feel like that on purpose.

Will the music be that bad? You and my missus would get along just fine, as that's her favourite drink - and she can drink it like water

Well considering all of these Melbourne metal clubs always tend to be super excited about advertising a "Slayer night" and what not, I assume they probably consist of mostly garbage.

I never go to those sort of things, not only do I not have any close metal friends, I'd rather hangout in a regular laid back bar while my friends put on songs that get all the drunk people singing along while I play pool than go to a crowded place full of dodgy looking people with club priced drinks just because they play metalcore or a few Iron Maiden songs.

Your not implying that a bar playing Slayer all night would be a bad thing, are you? Because that's just wrong.

No, more of a "We're going to play some of the most popular metal band around, because that's as metal as we know" thing.

Which is sad, but true. I once dj-ed at this club where some young punter yelled at me "to harden the fuck up and play some Mudvayne", while I was in the middle of playing a Belphegor track :durr: :brick: :getout:

For a moment I thought you were talking about a band called Man Converge. They're really pretentious.

Quote:
One day I became Leader of North Korea! Later, an alien ship landed on a golf course outside of Pyongyang where I'd just broken my 17 hole in one record! The aliens had come billions of miles to encounter new species! When the aliens saw how all the people worshiped me, they immediately assumed that I was the leader of the entire planet and refused to deal with anyone else! I instantly agreed with that notion and quickly signed a deal for a cultural exchange!

The aliens offered me technology for faster than light travel, doomsday weapons, and all manner of miraculous devices! In exchange, I gave them a copy of my autobiography (with a stamped signature and the inscription "To the owner: thanks for buying my book!") and a Big Mouth Billy Bass display that was broken so he never stopped singing and had a nuclear battery installed so the power would never die!

Using this new technology, North Korea became the envy of the world and quickly took power! The UN begged for some of the technology, so that nations like Europe and the United States, which had become vast ghettos, could catch up with the Democratic People's Republic! My conditions for sharing were two fold! First, that my personality cult be established everywhere, which it was, and second that Israel be surrendered entirely to Hamas to do with as they please, which it was!

After that I told the aliens that I didn't want their technology after all and gave it all back including the device that could generate free power and remove carbon from the atmosphere! They were saddened, but eager to return to their home planet, never to return to earth, with my last gift; a signed picture of me giving a thumbs while receiving a Kid's Choice Award! Then I hopped into the interstellar space craft they gave me and rocketed off into the sunset! Btw, I kept one doomsday device and set it to go off right before I left but I can't remember which one it was or how long the timer is set for, only that it's in YOUR CITY in YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD! Enjoy! Also I kept the machine that makes me immortal and invulnerable!

Album of the year so far for me. Everything this band does is fantastic and yet somehow they're improving with every release.

A lot of the vaguely metal clubs/nights I've been into are like that - aside from a monthly night called "Leave the Hall" (I've not seen it billed in a while though) Where they usually provide Running Wild, Overkill, Reverend Bizarre, even Bolt Thrower once.

Nope. It's In Somniphobia. Clockwork Angels may be great, but In Somniphobia is a career-defining masterpiece. If there is any justice, historians will remember this album decades down the line. This is our generation's Sgt. Pepper.

But were it not for that album, I'e have to throw a mention of Overkill's Electric Age for AOTY.

I liked Clockwork Angels a lot better than In Somniphobia, though both albums were good. CA really pleasantly surprised me. It's pretty damn metal and Geddy is in top shape.
