I watched Antichrist and Candyman with two female friends last night. LOL to Antichrist, Jesus, gotta love insanity. Candyman was more fun. Thinking of watching Hellraiser next, need to see more Clive Barker. I enjoyed reading his Imajica books. I should also show them Texas Chainsaw if they haven't seen it, classic. And maybe High Tension/Session 9.
Oooo I love Session 9! One of the best psychological horror movies from the past decade. If you like Session 9, you should check out the movie Absentia. It just recently came out, I believe it's available on Netflix. It's another great psychological horror that doesn't need blood or gore. Kind of a slow burn, but definitely worth it if you like the kind of horror that makes you think and actually use your brain instead of a bunch of blood being thrown on the screen.
Anyway, I'm a huge horror genre fan, I wish it wouldn't have taken me so long to venture into the Tavern and find this thread. I'm not huge on the 80s slasher flicks that so many are posting in this thread, I mean, they're good movies for what they are, just not my personal favorite.
my absolute favorite horror's are the obvious classics:
The Shining (1980) - the perfect horror movie? i think so
Alien (1979) - more sci-fi than horror but whatever, it's probably my favorite movie of all time.
The Thing (1982) - never has a movie given me the overall claustrophobic feeling of isolation like this one. love the atmosphere. oh, and of course the gore and the graphics are still awesome to this day!
my favorite more modern horror movies:
Session 9 - already talked about it above. one of the best psychological horror films i've seen
Absentia - already talked about it also. in the same vein of Session 9 as far as psychological horror that's kind of a slow burn
The Mist - kinda surprised I didn't see this one mentioned yet... instead of the movie focusing on the terror of the actual "mist", the real terror is the people and what happens inside the grocery store they are all locked in. This is a must watch.
Martyrs - you'll either love it or hate it. i personally loved it. some may write it off as torture porn, but it's so much more than that if you can stomach the violence
High Tension - say what you want about the ending, I thought it was fine, even if it doesn't really make much sense when you rewatch it lol. I can still remember the first time I saw this movie, it was the movie that really got me going into the horror genre so i'll always love it
[REC] - never never never never watch Quarantine, the American remake of REC. this movie, the original, puts most of all "found footage" films to shame.
Antichrist - well, I liked it. most won't. a beautifully shot and directed film for such a dark movie
A Tale of Two Sisters - good atmosphere. very creepy movie with a wonderful twist
Grave Encounters - i know i know, it's one of those "found footage" films and I know I just said [REC] puts most of them to shame, but this one is actually pretty good. i'm a horror veteran and it takes quite a bit to creep me out, but this one did
House of the Devil - awesome 80s throwback. kind of a slow burn also, but definitely worth it
A l'interieur (Inside) - french horror. very very gory. very very good lol.
not necessarily my favorite, but some enjoyable ones that have recently come out within the past couple years:
Dream Home(the 2010 foreign film, not the crappy Dream House with Daniel Craig), The Theatre Bizarre, Stake Land, Kill List, Cold Sweat, The Shrine, YellowBrickRoad, Amer, Kidnapped, Dread, The Signal
I guess I should stop now lol.
Anyway, I know most of the talk in this thread is about the older horror flicks but I figured this would be the best place to talk about modern horrors as well.
