There are too many good non metal bands from the United States for me to choose.

For now I'll just say Van Halen.

David Lee Roth on vocals;
Eddie Van Halen on guitar;
Michael Anthony on bass;
And Alex Van Halen on drums.

Simply mind-blowing.

Australia for me is home to so many of the absolute best Metal bands on the planet... (Destroyer 666, Gospel Of The Horns, Razor Of Occam, Drowning The Light, Abyssic Hate, Nazxul, SOL, Be'lakor ect...ect) but as for non-metal there really isn't much that interests me...

Angus & Julia Stone (& their solo projects) in my opinion are Australias finest Non-Metal musical export... Rose Tattoo a distant 2nd... Radio Birdman are cool too...

I love it how when the thread is "favourite non metal band" related, everyone scrambles to name hard rock bands because that's the closest thing possible to metal outside of metal, I mean cmon guys, be creative.

But more on topic for me, I love The Cat Empire, Frenzal Rhomb and The Living end, all fucking fantastic bands in my opinion

Ruben Blades
Big Fat Hen (Ok, they were a friend's band but they did achieve some success before splintering and becoming a whole different band.)

I would have to go with Tom Cochrane/Red Rider. Sometimes a little Pink Floyd-esque. Sometimes classic 80's stadium rock. Sometimes bluesy groove. Always pretty awesome.

We got more than our share of great metal here in canada but we also have some greats in the non metal side of things too.
The Tea Party-They dropped the ball on their last album but they put out several really incredible albums with Transmission being among the most exciting canadian albums ever.
I remember watching this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFzQX2i6mwo on muchmusic when i was a little kid and thinking it was pretty awesome.
Front Line Assembly/Delirium/Skinny Puppy/The Tear Garden etc.... Industrial wise we have some of the most legendary acts and these 4 are just the most famous, tons of great industrial stuff to be found.
Post Rock Stuff-We got Godspeed, Silver Mt Zion, Do Make Say Think and others that are the best and most original stuff the genre of post rock has to offer.
Classic Rock-We got BTO, we got the Guess Who, April Wine, Rush, the list goes on... Just pretend Kim Mitchell doesnt exist and you'll have lots of classics to check out.
Newer Indie Stuff-Some very promising indie bands from here like Metric, Land of Talk, Islands, Wintersleep, Death From Above 1979
I could go on forever and this doesnt even cover how much fucking awesome metal we got. Canada owns your country's music wise! Not even a competition, as long as you dont mention the barenaked ladies.

This man's got it right. I'll add in Colin James, Blue Rodeo, Wide Mouth Mason and Jesse Cook.

Anyone from the United Kingdom or United States is pretty much fucked trying to answer this question. So, I'm going to go with favorite non-metal band from my state.

Nirvana?

You gotta throw a little respect to Aerosmith and GnR, but my favorites? Probably Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, Boston, Journey, Kansas, Styx, The Eagles, REO Speedwagon, and RHCP. And Billy Joel! Love Billy Joel. Not counting the great acoustic players on youtube I follow, of course.

I'm from Russia, Lived in Israel, now Canada.

As far as Canada and a few bands were mentioned, my favorite is Arcade Fire. There are no words to describe their approach to music and how deep it is and powerful. I saw them at Lollapalooza in Chicago last year and it was the best show ever (maybe because I knew every single song they played from their knew album that was 3 days before the concert, so I did my homeworking listening to the album The Suburbs 24/7 for 3 days.) I really like Billy Talent - really catchy alternative band that has 3 CD's that sound all the same but I dont want them to change their sound at all. Caribou is considered an interesting character in the field of electronic/ Psychedelic pop scene.

As far as Russia - I left Russia at the age of 8, so I cant really know much but from what I did listen too in Israel because there is a huge Russian community there, so we got alot of music and movies etc.
I would have to go with Zemphira. A female Russian rocker, that can be compared to Garbage, The Cranberries and the music is awesome and the lyrics are really good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iGpdkgr ... ure=relmfu
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mL-5ljcFcJ4

Tequilajazzz is really some tripy fusion rock - really worth a try, you can find them all in youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MboVX93rsM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3p-JRWi ... re=related

Nol' (Ноль) is a really interesting underground comedic rocker band back from the 80's - really worth a listen because the guy plays an Bayan (Russian accordion) like you never heard before.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aDRH2ic3Mw (song starts at 1:10)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvqR_jbe ... re=related

As far as Israel - I cant really say a specific band I, wasnt really into Israeli rock scene but the band called "Ha-Mehashefot" (The Witches) with Inbal Perlmuter is considered one of the most famous rocker bands in Israel (she died early in a car accident at the age 26 and many people in Israel consider it as equal to Kurt's death and effect on Grunge as it affected Israeli rock within the Israeli rock scene).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evTS6RgH544
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56dd9PiC ... re=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYkohjW2 ... re=related

Sheygets is a cool band similar to Nirvana/The Fratellis that I discovered in the early 2000's.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxBkL0Mn1bw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WERXbeFU ... re=related

Shabak Samech, probably the first pioneering hip-hop/funk/metal/rock/ska band that can be compared to Rage Against The Machine, Sublime and Body Count.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOXjb_Mf9xQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvAUZHTY ... re=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTmPEDEX ... re=related

Fans of electronic music would surely say Infected Mushroom - I know very little about because i'm not a fan of trance music but people who do consider them legendary.

Nice man! Their Primitive Man album is amazing. Street Cafe for me, being a personal pick. And the epic Trojan Blue.

Personal non-metal favourite group (apart from the above mentioned), or collaboration in my eyes goes to the mighty SHIV-R. Forward thinking, dark, brooding and punishing EBM/Aggrotech. Seriously good.

I can't believe non of you poms have mentioned the brilliant Massive Attack or Fields Of The Nephilim :nono:

Bah, what's the name of that neofolk act from Chicago that once collaborated with Boyd Rice? I'd probably say them.

EDIT: I was thinking of Luftwaffe. Event Nihility is almost certainly the best american neofolk/post-industrial/whateveritscalled album I've ever heard.

It has to be Frank Zappa. The US might be an endless fountain of bands, but none of them come close to being half as good as Zappa. And that's on his bad days.

If we're talking best band/artist from my state (Illinois), I can't think of anyone besides Herbie Hancock and Styx.

Kingston Wall! Awesome psychedelic prog from the early 1990s, fronted by an eccentric genius who committed suicide when he was 27.

Well Finland had some of the best punk (especially '82-hardcore punk) bands so here's few of my favourite ones:

Ratsia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmEWExju1_c

Terveet Kädet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLycmd0B_80

Kaaos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUw3vSvt3m4&feature=related

Lama http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBWYVX608os

Other than punk bands, my all time favourites are:

Juice Leskinen & Coitus Int http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5w8v_hEp7Wo

Wigwam http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnH7KGyfhVE

Our Lady Peace's pre "Gravity" era, and Thornley. I'm actually an avid listener of alternative rock, unless it's uncreative poppy crap.
