This is a pretty broad topic but could be worthwhile. The 1960's saw the explosion of rock 'n roll as it became the predominant music of young people. The so called British Invasion, catalysed by The Beatles, pushed rock into everybody's ears and laid the framework for pretty much all popular music that we still encounter. Without this era, we would likely never have been given metal....I thought we could share some tracks as well as have some discussion regarding this era in music.

Please include a link to tracks and explain why you like what you've selected. I think we can accept material from the early-early 70's but try and stick to the 60's.

I'll start....

This track, 'I am the Walrus' by The Beatles is possibly my favourite track by The Beatles, who are, in turn my favourite band from the 60's. Great weird lyrics, though ultimately meaningless, great production (Lennon's overdriven voice is just perfect here) and great eerie melodic structure. Such a contrast to Please Please Me, almost hard to believe that its a product of the same band...

Cannot post the videos from my iPhone, but a few of mine:
Grace Slick and the Great Society-"Didn't Think So" (aka "Like a Raven")
Jefferson Airplane-"Share a Little Joke" (and pretty much all if After Bathing at Baxter's and Crown of Creation)

Pink Floyd's "Astronomy domine".

Live version on Ummagumma is my favourite, from 1969 I think:

Besides, In a Gadda da vida, House of the rising sun, California dreamin', Missirlou and most of Jimi Hendrix songs

Cromagnon - Caledonia is pretty sweet, and the whole album is actually really trippy. Awesome weirdo rock.

Helter Skelter by The Beatles and Somebody to Love by Jefferson Airplane. Both represent totally opposite sides of the rock spectrum as it was in the late 60s, but those two have stuck with me for years.

The Kinks - All Day and All of the Night

The Stooges - No Fun

Also some of the Rolling Stone's songs, the stuff from Led Zeppelin's first two, and Jimi Hendrix.

Oh, cool, I forgot about making this thread after it fell silently into the void.

This track is awesome in its simplicity and ferocity...

The Stooges- I Wanna Be Your Dog

The 50's were cooler, but...
Some of my favorites:

The Surprise Package - Out Of My Mind
The vocal harmony and stomping organ, bass and guitar are just awesome. This song really could have been a hit IMHO.
---
Os Mutantes - Jogo de Calçada
Technically released in 1970, but it's my favorite Mutantes song. It's so good, it send chills up my spine. I'm almost in tears listening to it at times. Pretty transcendental for 1970, and without being especially "druggy" and acid-fried.
---
The USA - The Garden Of Earthly Delights
The whole LP is great. It's hard to pick only one song to post. Get it!
---
Pearls Before Swine - I Shall Not Care
I found this band's first LP in my record shop's free bin. Not in great shape, and the singer had the most grating, weird lisp that I couldn't get over for a long time. They've really grown on me, though.
---
Fairport Convention - Time Will Show The Wiser
I dare you fuckers to make comparisons to them Doobies and they Chinese Grove.

^Hey, I kinda dug the track by USA. Love the innocent sloppiness of it. Could do without the singing though!

One of my favourite tracks by Creedence. I find it quite haunting, nostalgic somehow....Why can't we have music as real as this anymore?

Creedence Clearwater Revival- Lodi

Sappy, but I like them:
The Association-"Everything That Touches You"
The Mamas and the Papas-"Did You Ever Want to Cry?"
(Apparently, Cass Elliot was instrumental for teaming up some of the greatest musicians with each other)
The Charlatans-"Codine"
Spanky and Our Gang-"I'd Like to Get to Know You"
We Five-"You Let a Love Burn Out"

Edited to add;
Coven-"For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge"

The Doors and the Velvet Underground just might be my favorite bands from the 60s. While 1971's L.A. Woman may be their best album in my opinion, their 60s albums had plenty of great songs with the 1967 debut in particular being noteworthy. The Velvet Underground and Nico is my favorite album by the latter as it has a mix of pleasantness and foreboding that really sets it apart from its time. Venus In Furs and Heroin are always highlights but I find myself playing songs like Femme Fatale and I'll Be Your Mirror about as often.

I've always been an avid fan of psychedelic and garage rock, recently I've gotten into Ros Sereysothea, a Cambodian singer: this song's recording date is not known, but was most likely recorded sometime between 1967 and 1970. She was killed in 1977 (though some say she lived until 1979) by the Khmer Rouge that took over Cambodia, and destroyed many of her recordings.
