Hey

Don't want to rain on your parade, but for 50$, you won't get anything more than a cheap toy. If it's only for observation (no astrophotography), you should get a good dobson-mount newton. You could get something used for a couple hundred bucks. I know it's over your budget though...

Remember, the best telescope is the one that's gonna get used. If you buy a toy, the fun will leave really fast.

Yeah, Ive done a little research and people are saying to not even buy anything from a department store. Ive looked on amazon and think my range will go over $100.

I just came across this post by Phil Plait that gives advice for people looking into buying a telescope.

Unknown bright spots seen near Pluto's north pole.

I wonder if this will turn out similar at all to the bright spots on Ceres...

Intriguing. I wonder what that huge white-grey blotch is to the south. Even weirder since it's bordered diagonally on two sides by really, really dark blotches.

And here I was picturing Pluto as a dark blue planet.

It's really weird how smooth Pluto is overall, like there's not really any obvious craters (not nearly as many as I expected anyway). But there are a lot of surface features that are a little strange - how the hell would those blotchy lumps on the right side form?. So I guess there must have been a fair amount of volcanism surprisingly recently. Maybe its interaction with Charon has been enough to generate volcanic activity?

Well Charon's mass ratio compared to Pluto is apparently something like 8X the corresponding Moon-Earth mass ratio, so that wouldn't surprise me. Imagine how much stronger the tidal forces here would be if the Moon was 8 times as large as it is now.

The white area between the dark blotches is Pluto the cartoon character, hence the name

Hello, guys. I'd like to know whether any of you has ever heard about white holes. I mean, are these things even real?

Not really. It's a hypothetical concept, but none have ever been observed, nor are there any known physical processes that could create them.

Are they supposed to be the opposite of black holes and use some kind of inverted gravity?

Looks like there are new "discoveries" about black holes and "big things":

The new biggest thing in the universe, and why it’s a headache for scientists - August 20
Stephen Hawking believes he’s solved a huge mystery about black holes - August 25

Totes. Can't wait for the pictures of that weird arse city ruin and the "vehicle" that looked like it was driving into it to re-emerge. It would be soooo fun listening to politicians trying to blame 9/11 on Martians.

Quote:
Others, like planetary scientist Dave Jewitt, who discovered the Kuiper belt, are more cautious. The 0.007% chance that the clustering of the six objects is coincidental gives the planet claim a statistical significance of 3.8 sigma—beyond the 3-sigma threshold typically required to be taken seriously, but short of the 5 sigma that is sometimes used in fields like particle physics. That worries Jewitt, who has seen plenty of 3-sigma results disappear before. By reducing the dozen objects examined by Sheppard and Trujillo to six for their analysis, Batygin and Brown weakened their claim, he says. “I worry that the finding of a single new object that is not in the group would destroy the whole edifice,” says Jewitt, who is at UC Los Angeles. “It’s a game of sticks with only six sticks.”

There's an article on n-tv.de about that star people thought to be occulted by a giant structure by an alien civilisation, it's been examined more now, someone looked at pictures of it from the past 120 years and apparently it lost 20% of its brightness since then, and not gradually but through random ups and downs. That brought up even more questions, because it throws the most widely favoured comet fragments theory out. Now nobody has any idea anymore.

I'll try to find something in English later.

The outer space...

I've been fascinated with it since I was a kid. There were two things I loved to draw as a kid, planets/solar systems and country flags. I don't recall what got me interested in the outer space. Maybe its sheer and apparently infinite size? Maybe how beautiful it looks? I guess the media played into it as well. Been a huge Ninja Turtles fan since I was a kid, so everything about Dimension X where Shredder and Krang spent a lot of time at, intrigued me. I wanted to know more about it. Also, anyone remember the Rare N64 classic Blast Corps? There were levels in other planets of the solar system. And ofc, SNES Star Fox and Star Fox 64/Lylat Wars also contributed to my creativity and imagination when ti came to drawing fictional systems.

I swear, if I had a wish, it'd be travelling throughout space and discovering new planets. Possibly even contacting different life forms. It'd be so awesome.
