Thanks! Really digging the HDR setting on the phone camera - really made those colors pop even in cloudy conditions. My favorite was that last shot. I had to climb some pretty perilous stacks of rocks to get that view!

Extreme close up of Skull Canyon. What are these pieces of coral doing here? We are at 7000 feet in elevation, and about 700 miles from the ocean. I dunno, geology's weird.

It sure is, but if you're looking for an answer, science offers this: The canyon is a junction of tectonic plates (looking at Google maps, it looks to be right smack on the fault). The land there would have once been under water when the corral died, it would since have been thrust upwards when California joined the rest of America, only to be exposed again as it receded or a glacier came along to carve it open.

Alternatively: Noah's flood.

And why not: Thalès of Milos (circa 500 B.C.) figured that all four elements were just derived of water, and that it's entirely possible for some Californian lake to have just turned to stone.

Interesting...I did take a geology class once but I wasn't that familiar with how the plate tectonics shaped that particular area. I do know that most of southern Idaho and southeastern Oregon, where the Snake, Bruneau and Owyhee Rivers flow, were shaped by volcanic activity and lava flows.

I did talk to a geologist who said that the black mineral deposit had the same basic chemical structure as tourmaline, but with iron ions instead of lithium in it's molecular structure- or something like that anyway; the iron in the molecular structure makes it black, opaque and essentially worthless except as a conversation piece, but if it had lithium in it, it would be a colored, transparent and valuable gemstone.

Took a couple of photos on the mountain behind my new apartment here in Cheonan, South Korea:

That's one of the few pockets of nature here in the city, but I'm hoping to be able to check out some other beautiful stuff while I'm here so hopefully there will be more for this thread soonish!

Are animal photos alright? I've got a few neat ones, but none were actually *ahem* in the wild...

and no, I don't mean housecat photos, haha.

EDIT: I do have some landscapes that I forgot about, but I still want to know if I can add the animals :D

If they are pets, post them in the general photo thread. If they're wild animals taken in a zoo or in your backyard or something, I guess they could fit here. :)

The image insert isn't really working for me (i.e. I'm probably not doing it correctly), so I'll just post the link to the Flickr account that I just made. There's only about 25 photos and the latter half are the nature ones. Feedback would be very much appreciated :D

Here we go!

Basquestorm: That first photo, we used to get those things in the San Francisco Bay Area too, they were called "Puffballs" or something. (that was what we called them.) They are obviously some kind of fungus, filled with powdery brown spores, but I don't know enough about them to classify them scientifically or anything. That second photo, looks like some kind of thistle. I've seen thistles like that with purple flowers, never a yellow one though. Rest of them are beautiful- where were they taken?

That's what I think about the fungus too, Oxenkiller, and you're right about the thistle:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlina_acaulis

Quote:
In Basque culture it was traditionally used as symbol of good fortune, fixed into the frontal door of the house.

http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlina_acaulis#Propiedades

Quote:

Translation (it's quite interesting):

Quote:
Amalur provided to protect the mortals of the night geniuses. Were placed on the doors of the villages or on them to protect the house, if some evil spirit trying to enter the house and found a Eguzkilore (meaning "sun flower"), had to stop to count the numerous hairs or bracts inflorescence and the day would surprise him without completing his task.

Here are a few photos I took while on a bike ride I did a couple weeks back. This is one of the routes I take through the foothills right above Boise and is known locally as the Corrals loop. The foothills are pretty nice this time of year so I thought I'd grab a few pics (this was late August, around 7 or 8 in the evening.)

This is heading into the mouth of Hulls canyon, right before you ascend "Sonvabich" which is the second of three big climbs on the route.
Image

Looking up at the summit of "kick yer ass pass" which is several switchbacks above. When riding up it, it certainly lives up to its name.
Image

When you see this rock pile, you've reached the top of the pass!
Image

Sneaking a peak at the backside...
Image

Looking back up at the canyon you just emerged from. It's about 1.3 miles (~2km) back to the pavement, and about 3 miles (5Km) to the edge of town.

I actually took this "sunset" picture last year in August. I've recently updated my 500px.com profile and this particular pic seemed to have gotten many 'likes', so I figured I might as well post it here too. I didn't do much of post-process on this, it's just that the clouds and the lighting were kind to me at that time.

A few pictures from today. I decided to try photographing some red squirrels. I had to be patient and earn their trust to get close enough. I took the photos less than one meter away. I had a wide-angle lens so I still had to crop the photos quite a bit even though I took the pics from such a short distance. The first pic is a stream called Keljänpuro.

Haha, I was reading that as "driving at night" and I was like, "holy FUCK do they have some weird shit in the forests at night there."

It's going to be fall here soon, so I'm hoping to take a lot of pictures once the leaves start turning.

Me and my brother found this old abandoned cabin from a forest. It was like a witches cabin out from a horror movie or something! It was really creepy inside, but I didn't get any good photos from there. The old furniture was still in place. I wonder how many corpses or skeletons we would have found, if we'd have climbed the ladders and looked what the attic was like haha.

Cool photos thought.

We finished True Detective this last week and the creepy place at the ending chapter made me remember about this place I have near my home:

its been years and years and years since I've been there, but I remember there being a bunch of old abandoned forts and old military bunkers in the hills right across the Golden Gate bridge from San Francisco. There were a few of them you could go into and walk around in, and one in particular had this really creepy deep shaft that led off a tunnel that you'd walk through. I don't know if that stuff is still there or if you can still walk through it or not. That picture reminded me of that for some reason.

Carcosaaaaa! Cool pictures, guys. I will update this post with some shots I took yesterday.

Here are some pictures, as promised (nothing too exciting though):

Spoiler: show
Old burial mounds along the mountain trail.

Gazebo at the mountain top.

A few trees in one place had this blackened coloring to them. I'm not sure if it was the result of a fire or if it's some sort of dead moss that has turned black, but it had a really interesting texture.
Image

Some interesting moss and fungus.

The Red Ring of Death.

A shrine near one of the exits of the mountain trail.

The fall colors are just starting to show up. Should be beautiful in about a month!

its been years and years and years since I've been there, but I remember there being a bunch of old abandoned forts and old military bunkers in the hills right across the Golden Gate bridge from San Francisco. There were a few of them you could go into and walk around in, and one in particular had this really creepy deep shaft that led off a tunnel that you'd walk through. I don't know if that stuff is still there or if you can still walk through it or not. That picture reminded me of that for some reason.

Sounds interesting!

Of course we did! I just didn' get any good pics from there. The attic was the only place we didn't check out, because the ladders seemed to be in bad condition.

LOL! I was just joking!

I went to the mountain this saturday afternoon:
