I didn't notice the soundtrack much, but the music when the King's group arrived to Winterfell was great. The characters were all aged up for the TV series, so other than Catelyn still looking a bit too old, they looked fine to me.

Could also someone, please, anyone, tell me I'm not the only one who finds Daenerys (the actress, not the character) unattractive?

Waiting a week for the next chapter will be a torture.

Yeah, she is beautiful. Certainly the most attractive woman in the cast, I think. Catelyn did seem entirely too old, as well. I also thought some of the acting was a bit average and lacked feeling, but overall the acting was good. My favorite performance from the first episode was Peter Dinklage, I thought he gave the strongest performance.

Cersei's hotter, give me that at least.

But really, I don't know, I just don't like her and can't find anyone to back me up on this one.

Second season is confirmed, ten more episodes.

I really think they should go for at least twelve. The first episode felt a bit rushed, especially the Targaryen scenes, and judging from some reactions here, it's slightly confusing for people who have not read the book.

I think a 2-hour premiere would have been ideal. You could expand on several scenes that they included but shortened, such as the crypt of Winterfell (most non-readers will wonder, "what's this about Ned's sister? who does the king want to kill every night in his dreams, and why?" etc.), the discovery of the direwolves (the antler in the direwolf's throat being an omen, for instance), the presentation of the bride gifts to Daenerys (they didn't give enough time for the dragon's eggs, or Dany's silver -- I enjoyed the scene where she just rides around for a bit, finally finding a bit of happiness in that terrifying night -- and the silver becomes a very important part of her life later on), and Bran's climbing (I would have made the final scene linger a bit longer, with the camera panning to a landscape for mystery, but with wolves howling and the ravens waiting, calling for corn); those scenes deserved to have more screen time, to let them breathe a bit. And with you could have also included the scene with Bran and Tommen practicing in the yard, showing Joffrey being a total shithead from the get-go and showing the relationship between Jon and Arya. That would have been perfect.

But overall, can't complain too much, HBO did a fantastic job.

Daenerys was attractive in the way I imagined her as the most beautiful woman in the world--maybe not very attractive to me personally, but the actress definitely fit the role well lookwise (acting.. eh, not so much). I found the contrast of white-blond hair and dark eyebrows fascinating as well.

I agree things seem pretty crunched so far but I assumed this was just a quick introduction of the major cast of characters and that they will be more thoroughly fleshed out in the coming episodes. I'm already looking forward to the next.

I totally agree that a two hour premiere would have been amazing, but though it probably felt rushed as they had to introduce all the characters. But I think that will be fixed as the season goes on and the characters' background will be deployed better. If Jackson could fit each LOTR book in three hours while still retaining coherence I'm sure they'll be able to expand better having ten hours per book.

Nice to know about the second season, this probably means they'll get a bigger budget and make it more awesome.

the thing about Daenerys that pissed me off-no purple eyes. Viserys too

she's supposed to be an 'exotic' type beauty, all she is without them is just some pasty albino chick in the desert, pfff. how expensive are contacts? not a lot

all the other things they missed out on, i can get past but that one.......that rubs me the wrong way. otherwise i fucking loved it, i especially enjoyed the fact it was the first episode but i already saw like 6 women naked, including a star character-i await to see what other of the degenerate parts of the book they show, oooh boy

Anyone else seen the second episode already? t'was pretty good.
And damn, Catelyn is a hateable character. It's like the equivalent of the crazy religious fanatic on The Mist.

Catelyn isn't hateable at all. In fact, she's a lot more sympathetic than in the book.

Good episode but the added scene with Cersei pisses me off. Completely non-canon and out of character for Cersei, WTF were they thinking? I thought it might have been a bit more in-character if she had just made that story up, but here they say she wasn't. :nono:

The show desperately needs room to breathe, and unfortunately it's really affecting the quality of the storytelling. For someone who has read the book, it is nice to see some of the scenes brought to screen, but the story progression feels really rushed and the character development is mostly absent. For someone who hasn't read the book... you guys can correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me there is little reason to care about most of the characters yet, and the scenes must seem rather jumbled and disjointed.

Take the scene in which Jon gives Arya the sword, a pretty awesome and memorable scene in the book, and while converted mostly faithfully to the screen (though inexplicably missing some good lines, "Can't you tell? It's your very favorite thing. ...Needle!", "and whatever you do... don't... tell... Sansa!"), it seems that people who only watch the show would just be left wondering why the bastard son is giving his little half-sister a sword, of all things. Sure, it was apparent that Arya is quite the tomboy, but she had zero interaction with Jon until then, and I don't think she even had any lines. I think adding the scenes in which the Stark boys practice in the yard while Jon and Arya watch from the window would have went a long in establishing all their characters. You know, maybe having that instead of a pointless added scene between Jon and Jaime who will not see each other again in the next four seasons, if ever, or one between Cersei and Catelyn that completely destroys Cersei's backstory and character (maybe try reading the whole book before writing the script, assholes).

Likewise, they've barely shown the direwolves and their link with the Stark children (not one glimpse of Ghost in episode 2?), reducing a lot the emotional impact of the scenes about Arya's "trial" and Lady's death, which are rather devastating in the book. Poor Dany is also reduced to "that hot girl who gets naked in every other scene." Hopefully she gets more lines soon, damn.

I really don't get all the hate Catelyn gets, even from readers. She seems like a well-rounded character to me, with her strengths and weaknesses. I mean, I can see some people not being particularly fond of her, say, but it's often really pure hate that she receives, which is a bit mystifying. They even seem to be trying to make her more sympathetic in the show (no "Jon... it should have been you"? seriously?). Now you compare her to some religious fanatic? Where the hell does that come from?

I don't mean she's like the character, but as annoying.

Wait, I thought she was simply pretending, what the hell?

What's weird is that lots of characters haven't even been named yet, I don't think I've heard anyone call Robb by it's name, or any of the other Lannister kids.

Yeah, Robb has been named I think, but not Theon, and not Tommen or Myrcella. Non-readers will probably wonder what's the deal with Theon later...

have they even showed Tommen? (haven't seen this 2nd episode though) didn't in the first, and there was a GLANCE at Myrcella

and yeah that's another thing that bothered me, the Theon-he didn't kick the head! how small of scene could you need to show off that guy, and that he's a dick. come on

It was a good episode all in all (probably better than the first), but I agree that it feels rushed, and the Cersei babbling on about her son scene was indeed out of character. Anyway, this has all been mentioned in this thread already, so I'm not going to carry on with it. Another thing that is a bit of a let-down is the Dothraki, I really expected a lot more savageness on their part, especially in appearance. Some of the Dothraki look like the old dudes you find on the side of the road selling trinkets in S-E Asia, not formidable warriors.

Oh that happens often with books, when they first appear in the novel I'll already picture what the characters look like and even later descriptions won't change the original image in my head, I suppose that is why. Eddard Stark (in my mind) still looks nothing like Sean Bean, but rather a leaner fellow with dark brown hair and leathery skin.

But the very first time they appear in the book, they're described like so:

George R. R. Martin wrote:
A shadow emerged from the dark of the wood. It stood in front of Royce. Tall, it was, and gaunt and hard as old bones, with flesh pale as milk. Its armor seemed to change color as it moved; here it was white as new-fallen snow, there black as shadow, everywhere dappled with the deep grey-green of the trees. The patterns ran like moonlight on water with every step it took.

I don't know where you got the yeti from. ;)

Nah, it's really not that bad, HB and I are mostly nitpicking (except the Cersei/Catelyn scene in episode 2 where I do believe they screwed up badly). For the most part they get it right.

I still see yetis. So much so that I've been asking other people how they imagined The Others, finally my Texan buddy said he pictured them as yetis, too, which was fine until he told me that he always thought of Eddard Stark as being scrawny and looking like an engineer, so his opinion is now invalid as quite clearly something is not right in his head.

BTW, where is Hodor? Him and Tyrion are like my favorite characters.

That's great, now I just have to wait two years for it to be translated (yes, I'm totally OCD about having all books from the same publisher and edition, and in the same language).

On the topic of the TV show... Well, it had a couple moments so far that made me go "WTF?", but overall it's pretty good. Perhaps a bit rushed, and perhaps because of that I don't feel the same way about the characters than when I read the books.

Well I loved the first two, normally I'm going to be a week late watching these so I really appreciate you guys restraining from putting spoilers in the FFA, or Facebook if applicable. I thought Daenarys looked perfect for the role, the little kid Joffrey looks creepy as fuck to me also. I was totally expecting a 2-hour premiere as well, since that's not uncommon, but hey maybe that means there's a two-hour finale instead! Hell yeah! I also agree about the story feeling rushed but HBO wants to lure in non-readers and get them involved fast, I don't mind too much. This show is like the LOTR movies, I would have watched however many hours of extra scenes they wanted to give me. Unfortunately I bet the DVD of this show won't have extra scenes and stuff, they likely used everything they shot. Oh I also thought the Wall looked pretty boss too.

*warning: here be spoilers*

I really liked the two episodes. Only complaints I have is that, like others said, some of the major characters aren't properly introduced (yet). Also the one thing that annoyed me was that the relationship between the Stark children and their dire wolves is never really emphasized. Yes Summer did rescue Cat when the assassin tried to kill Bran. But we never really see the onset WHY the wolf goes through such great measures protecting him. Over half of the dire wolves haven't even been shown yet, let alone showing their (important) relationship with the Stark offspring.

I felt a lot less sympathy when Ned put Lady down in the series then I did in the book. Maybe because it was barely the second scene where we saw the beast..

The hound. THE HOOOUUUUNNND.

I am a bit disappointed he hasn't been shown more, even after the second episode, but overall I have very few complaints - I think the show looks incredible. The large amount of money spent is obvious, but in a good way - even the small details like props seem genuine (the mugs that Robert and Ned drink out of in the field over lunch are these awesome horn-mug things). Textiles, rooms, clothing . . . everything looks extravagent yet believable.

I love the opening sequence as well. There's a bit of this steampunk-y vibe going on, which is strange, but the music is great.

Yea, they're kind of zipping through the narrative, but I've read the books so I see it as a very logically-written screenplay. I am curious about how others who haven't read them but are watching think.

Peter Dinklage was the perfect choice.

just watched the second episode, really great, they got all the characters right. Too bad, the people who didn't read the books will think Daenerys is always and only fucking though. The acting is top notch, Joffrey is really douchy and Cercei is a manipulative bitch. Can't wait for the third episode

This show is my new Monday night ritual, God knows there's nothing else to look forward to on Mondays.

Well, now that Bran has woken up, I'm expecting to see Hodor pop up, and it's high time, too. I wonder if in the second season they will have Hodor at the feast dancing by himself? One of the most vivid images in my head from A Clash Of Kings.

There's two things I don't understand from the show. What exactly is the connection between the wolves and the children, and what is the significance of the three dragon eggs that Daenerys Targaryen has? Why did she stare at the eggs and smile when Khal Drogo was having sex with her in episode 2?

I believe I've just caught myself up with all the episodes so far; just three, right? I've never heard of the books, but all the buzz in this thread prompted me to check it out. It's pretty cool so far. A bit of it goes over my head, plot and character-wise (I don't think I know more than three character's names) and I'm obviously lacking the understanding that the fans of the book have, but I'm still enjoying it. I was very sad when the wolf had to be killed. :( I can hardly wait until all the tension between the elfish siblings (Lannisters?) and horse-warriors vs. the humans breaks out into full conflicts.

No, they are not djent. Djent is deathcore meets Meshuggah ripoff, ie shit. Don't you dare use such blasphemous words to describe Meshuggah.

The silblings are of house Targaryen :) Good that you're excited! Lot's of exciting stuff coming up! (not going to spoil anything of course!)

really, really great third episode. The wall is awesome and really well done and Tyrion and Ayra (two of my favorite characters in the books) are truly the same as in my mind and Barristan Selmy is fuckin' cool!
