As far as fantasy goes, I have to mention George R. R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series. Its the BEST Fantasy series out there.

I enjoy most of it except for trendy ass Harry Potter. Orson Scott Card books are nice and some of Clive Barker's fantasy stories.

Love OSC, especially the Shadow series. Excellent sci-fi/futuristic strategy/political novels. Fun and exciting reads straight through the series.

As for fantasy, my favorites are about Merlin, one of my favorite fictional characters ever. Does anyone know any good fantasy books with Merlin-lore? Especially about his earlier years/rise, but about any would be awesome, as well.

Clive Barker's Abarat series is absolutely amazing.
I'd have to say my favorite fantasy book is "The Book Of Lost Things" by John Connolly.

Well, I think pretty much everyone's aware of that by now. I can't wait for the HBO series.

For something a bit less well-known, I would highly recommend relative new-comer Scott Lynch, and his series The Gentleman Bastard. It tells of the misadventures of a band of thieves and conmen, the elaborate schemes they plan, and the huge trouble they often find themselves dragged into. Lynch has a mature and witty writing style, and talent for both hilarious and deadly serious scenes. Unfortunately, he seems to have recently caught Martinitis (does this come with success?) and book 3 (of a planned 7) keeps getting pushed back...

Also, to other posters, please offer a quick description along with your recommendations.

I love both Martin and Orson Scott Card.

If anyone of you loves Lovecraft, though, check out William Hope Hogdson. Especially "Night Land" and "The House on the Borderland". You will love them.

I just read Terry Goodkind's Wizard's First Rule last week, and it was very good. Fast-paced, imaginative, plenty of emotion from interesting characters, everything you could want from fantasy. The Mord-Sith were particularly interesting..

Phillip Pullman's The Golden Compass trilogy is one of my absolute Favorite book series. And the people who say it's promoting Athiest to kids are dumbasses.

Look.

It would probably be in your best interest to browse through the above thread, rather than posting right off the cusp in it.
