It was a different time of rock and roll back then. They did start out as very raw rockers in the Hamburg days until Epstein cleaned up the image. But you are right because they did change to pure songwriting style. The reason? They met up with Bob Dylan who told them they were very good but their music never really said anything and that inspired them to write Rubber Soul which was influenced by Dylan.
