Agree on Audiosurf (and iOS games like Supersonic). They just weren't made for metal (or any genre not heavily beat-driven).

For me a gamer is person who has little to no life outside video games and/or the one who is always waiting/looking for something new. (Mostly the latter one.) Not person like me who sticks with "good ol'" stuff and doesn't spend most of his day playing them.

Also about Audiosurf. What the heck you mean it's not "meant" for metal? I have no problem playing black metal tracks with it.

black metal doesn't have enough phat beats and wub wub drops for Audiosurf!

That's kind of true, but it's still kinda fun racing down a 7 minute onslaught of red occasionally. There's plenty of metal that does work very well on Audiosurf, but black (on the whole) is probably the worst genre to choose. Unless you're stupid enough to pick a SunnO))) song.

Bullshit imo. But then again, so is trying to over-classify everything (which tends to happen a shitload on this site). Call yourself what you want.

There's no such thing as an "over-classifying". The nature of verbal communication is to sufficiently define a word's meaning until it's understandable and acceptable by everyone, otherwise there's no point in using it. The fact that a given word's meaning is still open to interpretation indicates, contrary to your logic, that the word wasn't classified enough.

I'm calling bullshit, too. I've been a gamer my whole life, and having my entire college quarter last quarter centered around gaming, narrative, and the gaming culture, your definition isn't correct. Believe me, you're a gamer. The definition has long changed (or been properly adjusted, if you will) since the one you're talking about.

Never mind all the other games you mentioned (beating the Portal games over 15 times? L4D2?), the fact that Team Fortress 2 is one of your most played games alone is enough.

If gaming today wasn't more of an industry above all than an art-form, or at least if it had established itself as an art-form in the public non-gaming eye before evolving into an industry (as movies and music have), I'm pretty sure no one would try to deny that they were gamers.

Then again, it's also interesting that a label like 'gamer' exists for people who simply enjoy playing games in their pastime, while no such label exists for people that enjoy other mediums (unless taken to the extremes, like movie-buff or whatever).

^ Same here actually, I've been at it since last September, that definition of gamer is more a stereotype that gets more and more ridiculous as of today. 'Over-classifying' wasn't a very good term to use I admit, basically you said what I meant Yentass, it isn't something that is one-way classified. Anyway, go on!

Gaming just hasn't matured. Discussion on it can still be incredibly infantile (see the console wars). Playing games isn't quite as universal as "listening music" or "watching movies" and more cerebral and/or artistic games have typically gotten little of the limelight.

What I mean is; Big dumb hollywood 'splosion fests might still be crowd-pleasers in the world of cinema, but no critic would give it a 10/10.
In gaming however, well, just look at the list of best selling XBOX 360 games.

I think the mainstream breakthrough of the Bioshock series has proven gaming is definitely changing for the better though.
Not that I think the Bioshock games are all that amazingly well-written or complex on their own, but hey, they are by mainstream standards. it's like the Dark Knight of gaming.

You're absolutely right. I think gaming peaked at the late 90's/early 00's, when developers were made of smaller teams and treated games as their personal projects and creative vision. Before publishers pressured them into making the safe games that sell.

I suppose you're right. I personally believe that Bioshock is a poor example of gameplay depth but at least it excels in both visuals and narrative (which are more likely to be understood and embraced by the general public, which is unfamiliar with what the power of the 'gameplay' aspect of games).
It's disappointing because games genuinely have the potential to be far superior to films and music in terms of the experience they have to offer. Player involvement and gameplay depth add a whole new dimension that films can't even dream of matching. It's unfortunate that we'll never have our own Citizen Kane of gaming...

It still happens, look at the Indie scene. Seriously, Hollywood is nothing different from what you are describing. Games are getting more attention and more mature though considering that game-studies is also finally being recognized as a serious field in media studies. Also if you look at the discussions on games and call them immature, have you ever been on the IMDb boards, its ridiculous.

Just noticed this post. I ordered it instead of buying it at the store since, of course, neither local GameStops have it, so it'll be another week before I get a hold of it and then a fair bit of time after that before I feel comfortable taking myself into the realm of online mudstomping, haha.

Playing Darksiders 2 and enjoying it so far. The game doesn't stand out in any particular aspect, but the overall quality is quite good. It's got a nice soundtrack, good visuals, an interesting story and setting, a nicely done open world, fun non-combat gameplay, creative bosses and then some. It's a very enjoyable mix, even if it's too easy, even for me who never plays hack'n'slash. Only two enemies managed to kill me, and both times it was because I was hopelessly underleveled. It's not a game I'm playing for the challenge though, just for fun.

So I just finished AssCreed Brotherhood. I'm still going to play around in it though mainly to get the total synch up enough to unlock the remaining Christina side missions. Those were interesting.

I would love to be playing the Soul Sacrifice demo on my Vita, but Sony apparently has no idea how to balance PSN maintenance and PSN updates, so the NA users are still fucked right now. Guess I'll play AssCreed Liberation til then.

Been playing Zelda: A Link to the Past on an emulator to provide me with something colourful, relaxing and relatively straight-forward between study-sessions - I was going for Oracle of Seasons, but it refused to work. Nonetheless, I can safely say some of the best games ever made are under 4Mb in size.

Interesting. This is the first Zelda game to take place in the "Link is Defeated" timeline since the Oracles games.

3DS is looking damn good this year.

A sequel to LttP makes me cream my pants. LttP is one of my favorite games of all time and the idea of more of it is just amazing.

Also...
Spoiler: show
Image

Came in the mail while I was at work. $43 + $4 shipping, but worth it (allegedly this game's worth $51 complete). Fuckin' sweet.

Shin Megami Tensei 4, Luigi's Mansion 2, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Pokemon X&Y, and Zero Escape are the ones everyone is nuts for.

Nintendo could probably seal the deal for a lot of people with a Metroid Prime.

That new Zelda game has the 3D Super Mario Bros taint all over it. It looks boring as hell tbh, I hoped they would continue the Windwaker/Phantom Hourglass/Spirit Tracks continuity with their handhelds, those were big fun.

Windwaker is my favorite Zelda game but PH and ST were the worst Zeldas made by Nintendo, so no. I don't mind the art style, but this timeline has produced very little worthwhile so far.

I really liked the DS games in themselves, but the world travel in them is AWFUL, Spirit Tracks is so bad I stopped after like three temples, and I was enjoying the temples several times more than the too easy PH.

I've said it before, Spirit Tracks is the only Zelda game I stopped playing and traded in. The world map and the traversal mechanics are awful. AWFUL. The dungeons are great but it's not enough. I made it to the last boss, and was like, fuck this, I'm not enjoying this, why continue.

And yeah, the 3DS is fucking awesome. So glad I got one of these things. Been playing all sorts of things on it, revisiting old Mega Man games, E shop games etc.

Well, because you already made it all the way to the last boss seems like a good enough reason to play a few more minutes... but yeah, otherwise completely agreed about Spirit Tracks: fun dungeons, but everything else is really annoying.

I backed out of both PH and ST, note that I'm a massive Zelda fan.

Lately, I've been playing the 3DS more than anything else. I haven't played this much on a handheld since the original Game Boy. The best part is that though we've had stellar games, it seems the best is yet to come. Money well spent.

I do this sometimes, it's pretty weird. The last game I played almost to completion was FFXIII-2 before I threw in the towel on it. Again, I wasn't enjoying it very much. I really can't explain it.

Yeah, there's some great things coming up on 3DS. I'll be interested to see whether they can keep up the pace next year.

Though actually, I might cave in and buy one because of all the great things I'm hearing about Fire Emblem Awakening.
