So Amalur's developer went out of business. Pretty sad.

Sad, indeed. Amalur isn't ground-breaking game but it had much potential, fun to play. I dont like what videogame business is coming for and this is one example, and unfortunately not the last.

You kidding? Doom is disgusting with full on vertical mouselook if that's what you meant. Way easier to play with it locked in position, as it should be.

Err... disgusting? Well, I suppose it looks kinda weird if you look way up or down if that's what you mean, but there's little need to do that in Doom anyway. My original point was that it plays pretty shittily if you can't use the mouse to turn around like in any more modern shooter (you know, without forward-backward mouse movement resulting in your character moving forward/backward, as is forced by the original game). I guess it's fine if you want to play with the mouse while disabling vertical mouselook, though that feels weird for me.

Possibly, but that's because this whole genre sucks. Vehicular combat games, on the other hand...

Yeah. Roadwar 2000 was a neat little turn-based strategy game.

It's weird but I guess that's just how I've always played it. Enemies in front of you, above or below, you just shoot and hit them anyways. But yeah I boost that mouse sensitivity a lot. All this and the locked in view makes the frantic craziness easy to control for me. lol

I don't mind full mouselook on DN3D though. Guess it's just a Doom thing!

It's a matter of nostalgia for me, it wouldn't feel like I was playing doom if i was playing with the mouse.

What can you guys tell me about Marathon? Does it stack up to Doom and Duke 3D?

No but seriously (maybe you heard the stories about people playing the XBL port getting sick?). I have no problem with Doom and every other classic shooter like it, but there is just something really weird about Marathon. I think it's because the game looks and feels vertically taller in a weird way, and the level design is extremely claustrophobic for the most part. So I'm not totally joking here, the game is literally hard for me to play for some weird reason, when there's almost no other game out there that makes me dizzy like this one.

I hear good things but I just can't really play it. Weirdest thing.

Mostly because Doom is rendered in some sort of pseudo-3D that gets funky when it comes to vertical mouselook. GZDoom, which renders the game in OpenGL, doesn't get funky.

Despite that, I still play with vertical mlook locked because that's just the way Doom is meant to be played, unless certain wads are balanced for vertical mlook with no autoaim.

Indeed, it's not so much the look that bothers me (despite what my post made it sound like, lol), I just think Doom plays way better without vertical enabled. Easier to just ski around doing 360's destroying hell itself.

I had it on Win7 64 as well. It installed and ran properly, except that the character's movement was lightning fast for some reason, which made it unplayable.

Oh btw, I used the original version. Don't know if Steam has one that's patched for newer systems.

EDIT: Come to think of it, I had the exact same issue with an old game called HyperBlade as well. Everything works fine, but the character turns at ultrafast speeds. :???:

My PS2 controller wasn't being read by my USB adapter. So I thought my USB adapter was broken. Ordered a new one. Found out my old one actually worked and that my controller was busted. Ordered a new PS2 controller. Should have arrived yesterday but arrived at the Post Office hub an hour after mail was delivered for the day. Now it's the second day of just sitting here, on a Sunday, at a Post Office that's closed, waiting for me. :grr:

In other news, the North American Demon's Souls server are not closing at the end of this month after all. Atlus changed its mind somehow. This makes me revive a little inside.

Awesome game, lots of little things to discover and really fun to play.

By the way, Civilization V is at 5usd on Steam with all the dlcs included if I'm not mistaken.
Can't wait for the new expansion, hope they fixed the lag on the later turns though.

My case is not as bad as yours, but when I play the game for prolonged periods of time I get a bit nauseous.

Otherwise I think it's a fine game. One of the things I always disliked about Doom is the latter chapters when the level design is really labyrinth-y and chaotic, where you always need to find a key to open a door, do some backtracking look all over the place and again. Marathon is not perfect in the level design as it too can become pretty damn confusing and chaotic at times, but it never bothered me as much as in Doom. And the level design actually means something most of the time, it's not just a maze of corridors with several open spaces which are as confusing. There's a much more important sense of being in the environment and walking through it, around it, it shows the game was made by the same creators of Halo. You can look vertically, jump, dual-wield, there's plenty of guns, terminals to read to get info, backstory and mission objectives, pretty skyboxes and more varied environments than Doom, there's a better sense of objectives too. But, like I hinted, it's an old game: big levels which can be confusing relatively often, but they make much more sense and are easier to navigate through than Doom, it's far from polished (for the time) but it's very playable and relatively fun if you enjoy this sort of thing.

And the whole thing with saving the President's daughter? I mean...what the fuck. Maybe I just need to play further.

Yeah, I dunno. I told somebody a couple weeks ago that I stopped playing RE at RE3 and was told I need to play 4, so I dl-ed from PSN. I'm not caring too much about it either at the moment. Hmm.

Considered trying for the other endings in Silent Hill Downpour, but it freezes and lags so fucking bad I'm not touching it until the new patch comes out, and I don't think it's really worth suffering through the lags and freezes.

I still haven't touched RE4 since I made that post. The thing with that game (at least up to the point at which I played) is that it doesn't make me feel like I'm actually discovering or exploring anything the way I felt with the earlier RE games. Feels like just a bunch of head blasting on rails, more or less. The whole experience leaves me kind of hollow and totally incurious to find out what comes next.

Guys, don't expect survival horror like the previous games when playing RE4 (or 5 for that matter), or obviously you'll be disappointed as that's not what they were going for. As an action game it's quite good though.

On my first real playthrough of RE4 (meaning when I actually started and beat it), I considered it an action game and didn't ration my ammo. I was basically at a point where I was desperate - very desperate - for ammo by the time I took on Mr. Rambo in the ruins. Those who know what I'm talking about know that there was a fair bit more gameplay left after that, and not a whole lot of ammo to go around.

Eh...I feel I'll definitely come back to it soon, but I'm just hoping it gets better. It seems like it will, at least. And yeah, I know what you mean about the ammo rationing...already I can see how you could fuck yourself over in the later stages if you didn't keep a headshot policy.

I haven't played the earlier REs that much, never really got into them, but RE4 was fun blasting. Sure, the "puzzles" are, well, there aren't really any that you'd actually have to figure out and there's no real exploring, just new places to shoot at ganados or whatever. Still, pretty fun. As for the ammo, never really had a trouble with it. Or I did, carrying all the extra ones around that is. The only problem I had was with the too small inventory for all the stuff you wanted to lug around.

Haven't played Re4 since it first came out on Gamecube, but I was really into that game. I agree about the inventory though, even with the biggest one it still felt undersized.

I actually appreciate a small inventory in games like that. In fact I sort of wish all games had limited inventories, especially one-man-alone type games like RE4. Definitely adds a sense of urgency and a great degree of difficulty, not to mention realism. I kind of hate the fact that in games like Oblivion you can carry 12 different swords, 38 potions, umpteen scrolls, 5 suits of armor, and whatever the hell else you want. It's just... kind of...bullshit. I prefer a system that actually makes you think about what you'll need, and plan and play according to some level of limitation and believability. I do like the idea of caches and drop spots where you can squirrel away your collected items and keep them for when you need them. But being able to carry everything all at once feels like a silly cop-out to me.

And yes, I know "it's not about realism, it's about shooting zombies." I get that. But fantasy feels more engrossing and interesting to me when you apply at least some of the restrictions of real life to it.

Uhhhhhh.....

Everything that made Shadow of the Colossus work just will not translate to a movie, not at all.
