Cool, my brothers just sent me some games from my wishlist via Steam that I was too cheap to buy myself:

Goat Simulator
Transistor
Remember Me
Drunken Robot Pornography
Betrayer

Pretty cool of them, and I'm looking forward to playing all of 'em.

It's from the makers of other oddities such as: 'AaAaAA!!! - A Reckless Disregard for Gravity' and '1... 2... 3... KICK IT! (Drop That Beat Like an Ugly Baby)'.

Steam recommended it to me with baffling insistence for a few months...

Can Steam check your browser's history?

War of the Roses, anyone? It was Chivalry's main competitor a few years ago, but seeing as further development/support has been dropped because another game they were developing flunked (War of the Vikings), I don't think that's the case anymore.

I can definitely recommend it when it goes on sale, but just like all exclusively multiplayer games, how much you enjoy yourself is largely dependent on the community. It feels pretty unbalanced as well.. some loadouts/items simply seem to be objectively better than others, and actually discovering the best combination of perks and gear yourself requires a lot of grinding while being utterly destroyed by lvl 60's armed with fucking rakes, plus cavalry doesn't seem to be in any way limited, so a team with 2-3 horsemen against a team without them is pretty much guaranteed victory. These things stopped being as much of a problem when I disovered the crossbow though. I tend to be the annoying piece of shit who relegates himself to a certain spot on the map and snipes off enemies (especially the fucking cavalry) out of harms way because he's shit without the crossbow.

Plus, another community related problem I have with this game is that my favorite gamemode, conquest, seems to massively unpopular compared to DM servers, many of whom are actually fucking dueling servers. DM is okay, but feels somewhat directionless except for how the battle lines warp and evolve through the match, DM dueling has the strongest community around it and is good for a minute or two to playtest your loadout, while conquest actually feels like it has more purpose than "go kill enemy for points", and thus lends itself to more strategic and deeper gameplay. Besides, almost every dueling match I join has problems with RDMing, which usually goes unpunished because it's such a fucking hassle to initiate a votekick.

But.. it's still very enjoyable, and usually not as frustrating as I might be portraying it as. Tons of customization's available, and shooting those fucking horses in the head with a well-timed crossbow and watching the rider fly off into a crowd of teammates already agitated by the formerly untouchable fucking knight is always such a joy.

EDIT: I'm on an allnighter. Accidentally submitted this reply before having finished it. Fucking horses.

I never actually played War of the Roses, but I was told by many that it was terrible. It did look it from gameplay footage, to be honest. Chivalry: Medieval Warfare I have played and while it can be fun, it doesn't even come close to Mount & Blade: Warband, which is still the best of the three by far. What I did like about Chivalry was the customisation though. That was sweet. And the weapons do feel more weighty and impactful than Warband. The combat fails when in groups though. It's way too messy and chaotic. Duels are fine, but in groups... ugh. Warband retains great combat both in one on one fights and in groups.

Yeah, meleé in WotR looks pretty fucking stupid. The combat mechanic is based on readying your attacks, making them stronger the longer you hold in the button, and releasing it on the right moment, so combatants always look stiff as action figures during combat. You get over how it looks pretty quickly, but it's clearly not the best part of the game. Chivalry has some of the best FPS meleé combat I've experienced, largely due to how weighty it feels and how gory it's results can be, but it's definitely outshined by WotR when it comes to ranged combat and customisation of your character.

I've played the original M&B on and off since it went into beta back in 2004-5, and I remember being so enthralled back then by the notion of being a general of sorts and actually facing the enemy with your own soldiers, as well as by the hand-to-hand mechanic, which I still consider to be the best hand-to-hand, non-spectacle fighting mechanic of its time. How much has the combat mechanic evolved since then? I've yet to buy Warbands, and probably won't do so unless it's on a good sale or in a bundle.

It's not that I'm cheap, I just want to finish playing more games in my library before I commit to new ones. And I've got a looong way to go.

Warband is greatly enhanced over the old beta days. It's a lot smoother, animations are better and it's intensely skilled based since it's got directional blocking. In Chivalry, you tap the block button at the right time and it does it automatically. In Warband, you have to directly parry in one of four directions to defend against an enemy who will be attacking in one of those directions. It means you really have to read your opponent and get used to the animations. Naturally, shields make it easier, but a good played will have a blunt weapon as a backup to deal with shields, so you gotta learn to manual parry. Which takes a lot of time. I have over 1,000 hours clocked into Warband, and I'd say I only started getting the hang of it about a third of the way in.

Of course, that's just the multiplayer. You can play however you want in single player. As for horses and archers, cavalry is very, very powerful. Able to one-shot pretty much anything. The disadvantage lies with spearmen and ranged units. Spears can pretty much kill all but the most armoured of horses very quickly, and a skilled archer can take you down whenever they so wish. As for ranged weapons, it seems to work well, but I wouldn't be the one to ask. I never use ranged weapons myself.

But yeah, it all works very smoothly and, when you get the hang of melee combat, it's a lot of fun.

speaking of M&B, Bannerlord is still a carrot on a stick to us fans. They announced it when? like in 2012, and to this day they are still giving sporadic updates that make you wonder if they even care about the project anymore. Seriously, those updates look more like leaks that would start rumors that the game is being worked on. they must be really understaffed or underfunded.

i realize im kinda flipping out here, but i wouldnt be in such a gripe if i didnt love the game so much.

I figured I would do a search for Doom in case that was mentioned and of course, it was! I do still play every now and then and I am a big fan of DM and slaughter wads. I also did a fair bit of speed running as I have always loved the fast paced in your face action and of course creating wads is easy as well as online play (I went by the name of Springy or Reign in my priv CTF days). Hell man, I even made some relatively decent 1 on 1 maps in Doom Builder 2. If anyone still plays or is thinking of playing, then give us a shout if you need some help getting online. I did see that someone mentioned BFG edition and I would personally advise against that but if you do get it, I can get that shit uncensored for you for the classics that come with it. Restoring medikits and other infamous changes.

I just bought 999 and Radiant Historia. Can't wait to play those.

This Christmas has been Captain Toad and The Walking Dead S2 time (between awesome dinners and board games). I have barely moved in the past few days. I've ate so much chocolate that I feel very depressed. Merry Christmas you lot!

Did you check out the "lost" textures and sprites Romero recently made available via twitter? From a historical perspective, some of this is invaluable. I really got a kick out of how they used scans of some old dinosaur toys to sync up the demon's posture and gait correctly:

Nightgaunt and myself are probably the biggest DooMers on the board. I was a bit too young though, I first played the game on the SNES port ironically, and have spent the last couple of years trying to tackle the hardest megawads on UV. I beat Alien Vendetta last year along with the other usual suspects, but Hell Revealed is the only one that I can't beat. Just ridiculously hard, I'm stalled at MAP22.

Have you tried Scythe? It's mostly pretty fine apart from the last five or so levels. The last one is a real doozy, especially if you feel like you have to kill everything.

Here's me playing it, but I couldn't do it all in one go because it took 47 minutes of tries when I didn't die!

You can count another, though truth-be-told I haven't played any newer WADs in many years (Doom The Way id Did, for example). The other id software titles can be worthwhile, too.

Supposedly Scythe is like an early Deus Ex kind of game and is now available on Steam. I've been pretty curious about it.

And there's a whole 2nd one haha. The Memento Mori's are awesome too.

Alien Vendetta is probably my favorite, it doesn't seem like it'd be too tough on UV. I usually play on HMP myself and remember it kind of got easier as it went. Except... I imagine this level was fucking brutal?

Any other megawads you like? I'm a big fan of these five, but other than that I think I've just completed the Community Chest Packs 1-3. Which given the variety of mappers, the quality is pretty all over the place, but there were definitely some standout maps at times. Still better than most of vanilla Doom.

I found Scythe to be okay at best but the sequels (Scythe 2 and the still incomplete X) are a lot better in my view. Yes "Dark Dome" is relatively difficult although I found "Afterlife" to be extremely difficult yet bizarrely it remains one of my favourite all time levels (Hell Revealed). Just clocked onto the CChest series being mentioned and the fourth installment I found to be very good although the third is still my favourite. Very nice texture set, too.

Damn, not even sure if I remember that map, watching it now. Guess it's been ages since I've played Hell Revealed.

Scratch what I said about Scythe above... guess I was mixing it up with Strife.

I agree about CChest 3's looks being awesome. Wonder if I can find one of my favorites...

Xeogred, heh I was just watching a Dark Dome playthrough and considered posting it here too because that level is so killer. Yeah...AV is probably my favorite. Nemesis, Hillside Siege, and especially Clandestine Complex stand out for me. I am a big fan of tech/mountainbase hybrid levels.

MM 2 is better than MM, but both are well worth the time. My favorite map from 2 is The Silos, and from 1 is Twilight Lab. Nobody seems to mention Plutonia 2 very often, maybe because it is newer, but that entire megawad is absolutely fantastic and unbelievably difficult at times. Just to give you an idea, this is MAP29, which took me longer than any map, ever:

I personally felt that MM 2 was better in looks and texture choices as opposed to the first, although I did find the first a lot more entertaining in the game play department. The third, now that's a different story (the third is technically "Requiem"). Beautiful choice of textures balanced with fine game play. Map 08 being my personal favourite with the mines. Insertion is a sort of "outtakes" of MM, I do believe, I seem to recall reading this somewhere and it's well worth checking out.

Found one of my favorites from CC3, visually. I guess it's pretty simple looking back on it, but I've always liked the tall interior levels with a lot of nice details and tech. Kind of reminds me of the newer PSN/XBLA map pack No Rest For the Living, they did a good job with the level designs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-H1oXhO17k

There was also another map that was kind of circular but had this massive tower in the middle with other big buildings throughout. I remember it took forever, but I love huge maps. I can't remember if it was CC3 or not... but it was one of my favorites.

@Diamhea: Nice, I'm probably fan of those kind of levels myself, weird sewer stuff too (always loved Doom 2's The Chasm). The red hell levels are probably my least favorite actually haha, though Hell Revealed and Alien Vendetta did that stuff well, I remember loving the looks of the last set of AV levels. There was more red, but still a lot of temple like structures that I really dug.

I always forget about Plutonia 2. Wasn't it a fan made spiritual successor? Does it also abuse chaingunners?

I just ran through all of vanilla Doom again this year on the PS3 with the Doom Classic Complete collection. Included TNT, Plutonia, Doom 2 Master Levels (yuck), and No Rest For the Living. I used to think Plutonia was one of my least favorites, but it actually might be the best of vanilla Doom to me. The only issue is that the texturing was pretty terrible most of the time, the entire package is pretty much BROWN walls everywhere. The level design is otherwise very consistent and not as weird as TNT (half the levels there feel like they were from DN3D instead or something). I wonder what Plutonia would be like with a facelift on the texturing. Otherwise it's awesome, with the exception of chaingunners out the ass.

Well, one of Plutonia's trademarks is excessive hitscanners, so yeah, it does have that. Brown/green is sort of the palette for Plutonia as well, I suppose. More about gameplay than aesthetics anyhow.

Another Zandronum person here is the last thing I expected to see.

Well, ex Zandrobum player. I played more when it was ST, albeit not as competitively. I do visit the IRC every now and then under the Blasphemer channel. Recently though, I have been far too busy and would rather not be at a computer when I get home from work, as I don't want to see another monitor for the rest of the day.

The backstory involving Curt Schilling, his 38 Studios failure, and bankruptcy is brutal. Or hilarious, depending on how you want to look at it.
