Haha, read about that in the paper today. He's not going to be charged and I think the night in jail is justified. Although he didn't have bad intentions, what the hell did he think would happen? I wonder if he would've gotten off without a charge if he wasn't a professional sports figure.

What has one win, two losses, zero second-half touchdowns, and leads the CFL East?

The Ottawa Redblacks! Heh, gotta love this league :D

Just spent the weekend at the Chicago Blackhawks convention. It's set up in a shitty way that all but guarantees you don't get signatures/pictures with the big name players unless you camp out in the parking garage and swarm them when they try to leave (which I did because fuck privacy), but it was a good time anyway. Pierre Pilotte sniffed my jersey and said "WOO you need to spray this some time, boy!", I asked Nicklas Hjalmarsson what his favorite In Flames album was, and he said "one of the early ones" but wouldn't pick a specific one, and I realized that Eric Daze looks an awful lot like the bad guy from Lazy Town.

The Texas Rangers have a pitcher named Nick Tepesch. Word is he goes by his middle name: Vlad ;)

Anybody else here play Fantasy Football? My draft is in five minutes. This is my sixth year and I've only made the playoffs once. I'm a five year noob and dammit I'm gonna break that this year.

I don't get super into Fantasy Football, but I generally play every year. I get frustrated with it easily if I care too much, so I generally don't put in a lot of effort during the season. I tend to draft pretty well, but then my best players always decide to get hurt (I'm looking at you Arian Foster with your 1 TD all season). I'm not one to make lot of trades, and I generally only switch up my team to adjust for bye weeks and injuries. I am also biased towards drafting Patriots players because I like being able to root for my fantasy team without rooting against my actual favorite team. Overall, I tend to always finish in the middle of the pack and I have never won. I leave my winning for March Madness.

Texas also has a player on the roster by the name of Rougned Odor. If that doesn't land him a deodorant endorsement then I don't know what else would.

It's been a bit of a weird year in baseball for stars. Cabrera fell several notches, Trout fell a notch, Tulowitzki got hurt, and it just doesn't feel like anyone's really dominating. Obviously, the depth is there, but the top feels a bit weaker than usual.

It would be funny if Trout wins his first MVP despite having an "off year," just because Cabrera fell off that much more. Trout is still among the AL leaders in homers, RBI, and WAR (not that I have a clue how that's calculated). And he's on a team that will, absent some disaster, make the playoffs.

I agree with the lack of dominance by any specific everyday player, but Kershaw is having an amazing year. He could win his third Cy Young, and he's only 26 years old!

Kershaw is probably the best player in Baseball, but he's NL so I don't see much of
Him. Normally, I'm not fond of a pitcher as MVP, but no one else deserves it.

Oh yeah, fantasy football is my shit. I won my league last year, so naturally it feels good to be king...and I have a huge trophy to show for it. My team this year is great, so I fully expect to pound the plebs in my league into dust once more!

That reminds me: I need to deface our league trophy in some humorous fashion before the season starts so that my mark may be left for generations to come.

I've won fantasy hockey before (pretty sure it was the 2010-2011 season), but I'm just shit with football. I dunno why, my management style is to just draft extremely well (the year I won hockey, the guy I beat in the championship had two players out of fifteen that he'd drafted, I had twelve), but that doesn't seem to work as well with football. The guys I play with are usually just much faster than me with the waiver wire so I always end up in the dust. Plus I just have shit luck. Westbrook gets a concussion in week 4 or McFadden goes from a top five running back to suddenly remembering he plays for Oakland and just starts sucking. This year I got myself a coach so my RB/WR depth should be immense and I'm not relying on a stud QB like I normally do. Whatever I was doing, it wasn't working, so I've gotta mix it up somehow!

Miggy's been playing hurt. I think Mike Trout has been playing though some pain most of the season as well but you wouldn't know it looking at his slash line which is even more of a testament as to why he is the best player in the game. Tulo is a great player but so goddamn injury prone. I disagree about nobody dominating (for position players)..two words for ya: Giancarlo Stanton. If you are going by home runs, well yeah they are obviously down because of stricter PED testing. When players aren't juicing, the balls are staying inside the park.

Yes, Stanton's the best everyday NLer, but he hasn't been at the level that Trout, Cabrera, even McCutcheon were a year ago. There's always going to be a best player in the league, but if he had done this last year, we wouldn't be so impressed. Also, depending on how you feel about the defensive metrics and how they should be weighted, you could toss in a couple of other names on the prowess of their glove.

Indeed I do put a premium on defense as evidenced by my belief why guys like Edgar Martinez and Adam Dunn (career DH guys) should not be voted into the BHoF despite their career home run numbers.

With DH's, I ask myself whether they would have been able to stay at first. If you can hit well enough, they'll play you, and there's plenty of rock-gloved first-basemen in the hall. I would agree about Adam Dunn, I'm not sure how long he could have stayed without the DH, but I think Edgar could have still handled first after his injury. Admittedly, I never got to watch Edgar play, but I have a tough time thinking that he couldn't have been at least okay at first, not to mention that his non-DH was about three and a half seasons at third.

Probably watching the Saints and Falcons today; I have Brees and the Saints' D on my fantasy team. Tomorrow, the Lions play the Giants. Let it be the start of something great. In the name of the Megatron, Jason Hanson, and the holy Sanders. Amen.

Brees is my fantasy quarterback as well; took him in the first round because a lot of people gun for top-flight quarterbacks early in my league and there's a couple Saints fans who I pissed off with that pick as well, haha. Also drafted Cam Newton though, with the intention of trading one of the two quarterbacks for someone like A.J. Green.

God, I love fantasy football. I wasn't even a huge football fan before I got into it, but there's something about the pure dumb luck mixed with a bit of skill and sports knowledge that makes it really entertaining. Go Cincy!

SUPER BEARS SUPER BOWL! CUTTY WITH THE CONTRACT EXTENSION! IMPROVED OFFENSIVE LINE WITH KYLE LONG BLOSSOMING AND KEEPING A FULL UNIT ALL LAST YEAR! IMPROVED DEFENSE WITH LAMARR HOUSTON AND JARED FRICKIN' ALLEN! ALSHON JEFFERY BREAKING OUT AND TEAMING UP WITH BRANDON MARSHALL! FORTE GETTING BUKU YARDS FROM SCRIMMAGE!

Or wait we have Slauson and Garza get hurt on the O-line, Jefferey goes out, Tillman gets banged up, D allows a bajillion rushing yards again, Cutler throws two hilariously stupid interceptions, and we lose to perennial laughingstock Buffalo.

Don't talk to me.

^ I honestly thought Cutler was out of the league. Well, the Cowboys disappointed me today. I'm used to seeing mediocre quarterbacks have some awful games, but Romo really isn't average. He's usually one of the top 6-7 qb's in the league, yet he has "Twilight Zone" games that I expect from worse players.

It's been a crazy night for baseball. 12 people got hit by pitches in one night, two in the face. It's really scary to see this, especially the one that got Stanton.

In light of the Ray Rice scandal, the female members of the US Senate are calling for the NFL to institute a zero-tolerance policy. http://baltimore.cbslocal.com/2014/09/1 ... uspension/ Between this and Adrian Peterson's indictment, what do you guys think will happen?

Normally I'm all over the sports news and willing to type for eons about it (I've had a couple massive hockey posts in the past), but I'm just so tired of talking about the Rice/Peterson thing at this point. Basically I can sum it up like this: Rice fucking shouryuken'd his fiance on camera, what the fuck did he think was going to happen? The initial suspension was a joke and the backpedal might totally backfire since he's appealed on grounds of double jeopardy (doesn't mean anybody will sign him since he's clearly a fucking scumbag and just got off a really disappointing year anyway).

Peterson's is almost worse for me because, even though I'm a Bears fan, I'm a huge AP fan and this is just crushing to learn about. Like, if this story would have come out and it was Cortland Finnegan or Chris Conte or Ndamukong Suh, I'd've bought it without a second thought. But this is AP, one of the most well loved and respected players in the league, not to mention one of the best. This is like hearing that Drew Brees or Charles Tillman abused their children, there are just some players that seem like the nicest people in the universe so it's hitting pretty hard. Massive shame too because I'm willing to say he's the only truly, 100% indisputable first ballot guaranteed hall of famer RB to play in the modern era. How many truly great years do you get out of guys nowadays? Three if you're lucky? Four at the absolute max? Either you're consistently good like Frank Gore or something, or you're a total flash in the pan like Chris Johnson. AP was the exception to the rule, the dude has been unquestionably dominant since what, 2007? I can't remember when he came in the league, but his longevity, talent, and prowess are practically unheard of nowadays. That's why it's so sad that he went and did something like this, it could completely tarnish his career accomplishments. I mean, yeah apparently he's a reprehensibly terrible father and absolutely deserves whatever punishment he gets, but I never gave a shit about Ray Rice, I've always loved Peterson so this is just ten times more surreal for me.

And with all this, the NFL has handled this in the worst way possible. Every single step of the way they've blundered up and shot themselves in the foot. I can't even bring myself to rant at length on everything they've fucked up, I'm just so frustrated with it. There's a scene in Casino where a guy rigs a slot machine to win, the casino loses a bunch of money before he runs out and De Niro notices. He fires the guy watching the floor because "either he was in on it, or he's too stupid to notice, either way I don't want him in charge of my money". That's exactly how I feel about Roger Goodell. I always say that Gary Bettman is the worst commissioner in sports, but Goodell just managed to catapult himself into the lead. The dude has a reverse midas touch that I don't think anybody has ever seen. How the fuck he managed to be so successful and make the league so much money when he's been screwing up, acting inconsistent and shadily, and intensely disliked by everybody from day one is beyond me.

Also, Tillman's career may well be done. End of an era for Chicago ;_____;

I have a habit of forgetting about LT. Yeah, he was really impressive too, though he was never the freak of nature that Peterson is/was. Still though, the fact that he was pretty much never injured was crazy. He only had a few freakishly dominant years (06-07 being the obvious one), but yeah, he's HOF material as well, for sure.

On the topic of Hall of Fame, here's the list on the ballot. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/20 ... announced/

I see a good number of worthy names, but Kurt Warner's not one of them. I do suspect he'll get in though.

Erm... yes he is. Pretty much the entire Greatest Show on Turf is.

But look at the RBs, see what I mean? Frickin' Priest Holmes? Edgerrin James? Jamal Lewis? Shaun Alexander? Don't get me wrong, those guys were good, but I certainly wouldn't be nominating them for any hall of fame position. Maybe you could make a case for some of them, but other than Jerome Bettis, I wouldn't pick any of them, and really I'd vote for Bettis mostly because of his longevity and leadership.

EDIT: Oh wait, are you saying you don't think he's worthy? I disagree there. He's got a great story coming in as the unknown and just completely lighting it up with one of the most exciting offenses in recent memory, plus he stayed good well into his later years and even pulled a completely surprising Arizona team to the Super Bowl on the strength of pretty much just he and two good receivers. Yeah yeah he had Bruce and Holt in STL but they also had Faulk. I can't even remember who was running for Arizona in 2010.

There's no way I'd vote for Bettis. He played at an above-average level for eternity with nothing really stand-out. That's just not what I think of for the Hall of Fame. I'm willing to go on longevity if you at least had seasons of something better, but Bettis was just the luckiest running-back ever to not break down sooner.

Warner will get in on the story, but I don't feel like his stats stand up to scrutiny. If I had to rank them, he might make 30 on a QB list, and that's just too low. I view Favre, Manning, Brees, Brady, and maybe Rodgers as the elite QB's of my youth.

I view Bettis similarly to how I view Gore when I mentioned him a few posts ago. They're both good players who have played an insanely brutal position for a very long amount of time while playing it in a very physical way. They're both "run you over" instead of "juke around you" type players, and the fact that they stayed as good as they did for as long as they did is really special. The difference to me is that Bettis has a Super Bowl to back up his claim, plus Gore never really struck me as the leader type, whereas Bettis was the kind of guy everybody would rally around. Personality shouldn't mean much about your football playing skills, but he was and is damn charismatic and that'll definitely keep him ingrained in everybody's memory.

And re: Warner
Wikipedia wrote:
Warner first attained stardom while playing for the St. Louis Rams from 1998 to 2003, where he won two NFL MVP awards in 1999 and 2001[5] as well as the Super Bowl MVP award in Super Bowl XXXIV.[6] He led the 2008 Arizona Cardinals to Super Bowl XLIII (the franchise's first Super Bowl berth), and owns the three highest single-game passing yardage totals in Super Bowl history. Warner currently holds the seventh-highest career passer rating of all-time (93.7),[7][8] and the third-highest career completion percentage in NFL history with 65.5%.[9]

In 13 career playoff games, Warner ranks first all-time in completion percentage (66.5%), first in yards per attempt (8.55), and second in passer rating (102.8).[9] He also holds the highest completion percentage for a single game during the regular season, at 92.3 percent (24/26), on September 20, 2009, against the Jacksonville Jaguars

Certainly seems like a HOF career to me.

Warner had some really brilliant years sprinkled in a short career with many that were also average or truncated from injury. He's more worthy than Cunningham, but I'd honestly rather induct a couple others in line at that position, Ken's Anderson and Stabler, and there's even more deserving ones at less glamorous positions, Chuck Howley, Johnny Robinson, Jerry Kramer, etc that will probably never get in.

i started watching the chargers in 06-07 i believe. LT was an awesome running back, and as far as i can tell, set the SD standard for having to have a tight running game. Rivers' ability to play is like flipping a coin. He's inconsistently great and terrible. a strong running game is needed. I havent had the chance to watch them at all this season cause of work or school, but hopefully weddle is still doing a decent job.

^ Tomlinson was impressive for sure. There were times like you implied where he pretty much was the Chargers offense. I do think Peterson has been more impressive, but Tomlinson was great for sure.

On the subject of Rivers' inconsistency, do you feel you guys could have gotten a ring if Brees had stayed? The Chargers did make the playoffs a couple of times, do you think Brees would have pulled through?

On the subject of Rivers' inconsistency, do you feel you guys could have gotten a ring if Brees had stayed? The Chargers did make the playoffs a couple of times, do you think Brees would have pulled through?

Hard to say, norv kind of anchored the whole team (I'm not totally convinced it was solely him, but the patterns arent looking to his favor), and schottenheimer gave em the best numbers. There's also the "wall of choke" which is the patriots in the playoffs. on the off chance they ever make it that far again. This new coach is showing some promise though. Last season they went to the playoffs after years of slowly getting worse and worse. Not sure who your team is, but here's to a better season

Has the american football shite ended now? Good.

I'm loving this Man utd decline. Every week Van Gaal makes some ridiculous comment about being on top of things, and then they get walloped by fucking Leicester. This is what you call entertainment.

Bettis definitely deserves to get into the hall of fame. I live in Pittsburgh and he's a fucking legend around here. The dude played well for years in a really tough position, made a big name for himself, and won a Superbowl - what else do you need?

That's exactly what I was saying, haha. Dude played a really tough position for eons and was a charismatic leader that helped lead them to a championship, he's absolutely worthy.

Yeah. I don't know what other criteria you could need, honestly. More Superbowls?

When I think of HOF worthy players, I think of guys who were dominant and well within the conversation for best at his position. Bettis never was argued as the best back of his day or even particularly close. When Bettis was young, Emmitt and Barry were a couple of cuts above and then Marshall and Laidainian took over. Even Curtis came closer to being regarded as a premier back. I get that he's a big deal in Pitt, but Bettis being lucky not to break down doesn't merit him being remembered as an all-time great.

Well.....

He's sixth on the NFL all time rushing leaders list, and 4 of the 5 guys above him are ones you mentioned (Emmitt, Sanders, Martin, and LT (Payton is the last one)). So yeah, saying he's not as good as those guys doesn't seem to mean much since he's better than literally everybody other than those guys. Plus a really low fumble percentage, massive intangibles, charisma, and a Super Bowl ring? FSM's right, really what more do you want from the guy?

The problem with your criteria is that we'd stop putting people in the HOF after like five of each position goes in.
