God damn, they're bizarre.

Another interesting spectacle: an anglerfish with its stomach in its mouth (apparently the stomach inverted due to decompression):

Finally, what would this thread be Wobbegong photos?

someone mentioned the vampire squid earlier, figured I'd post the wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire_Sq ... escription

some cool points include:

- instead of ink they shoot bioluminescent mucus to blind and dazzle predators.
- they glow a bluish haze to cloak their silhouettes
- can survive in water where oxygen saturation is less than 3%, apparently this is rediculously incredible.

I find the way they use light for hunting and defense is pretty sweet.

EDIT: also their Latin name means "vampire squid from hell" I'd say the most metal of all squids. :headbang:

I don't know, I guess it's because it's a pretty known type of fish and because they are different from other 'normal' fishes without being some monster of the depth. I also like their unusual shape hehe. Anyway i'm not an expert in fishes, and i just though that they deserved a mention. :)

Whilst searching for some stuff I came across this freaky thing! Remind me to NEVER go to the Amazon!

Wikipedia : Candiru pronounced "kan-dee-roo," also known as Canero or toothpick fish and even 'Penis Fish', refers to parasitic freshwater catfish of a number of genera in the family Trichomycteridae. They are found in the Amazon River and have a reputation among the natives as the most feared fish in its waters, even over the piranha. They are eel-shaped and translucent, making them almost impossible to see in the water. Some species have been known to grow to a size of 6 inches (~15 cm) in length.
This fish has been known to attack humans and animals and swim into an orifice (the vagina, anus, or even the penis—and deep into the urethra). Because of spines protruding from the fish, it is almost impossible to remove except through surgery. Though there have been documented candiru attacks on humans, there is no evidence the fish can survive once inside a human. The danger for the person lies more in the infection and shock that results from having the organism lodged there for an extended period of time than from physical damage done by the actual fish itself.

Agreed that it's an excellent topic. I'm going to be completely honest and say that merely looking at these photos has produced a fight or flight reaction in me...AND I'M AT A FUCKIN COMPUTER! My hands are sweating, and my heart is beating considerably fast. I've never seen or heard of some of these "things," and I hope I never do in person. I mean, that giant hermit crab thing on the garbage can?? No way that was real, I can't believe it. On a side note, and though not a sea-creature, anyone ever see a Goliath bird-eater tarantula? I'm sure some of the fellas here from Central and South America will be familiar. I mean I hate spiders as it is, not to mention one that's as big as a dinner plate and burrows in the ground, waiting to attack. The stuff of nightmares.

I actually had a pet Frilly Necked Lizard for about a week. I used to live in Australia and I saw two on a tree, so me and my mate grabbed them and put them in our lunch boxes and took them home. I had mine for about a week before I ran away or died, I can't remember which! That was pretty bizarre.

This thread is great. I love the weird curveballs nature throws at us constantly.

I'm actually considering getting a mantis shrimp. My local pet shop regularly has them. Feeding it might be expensive though.

This thread is awesome.

I never thought sea anemones were interesting until I watched some National Geographic special on them and mentioned several species that had claws as part of their tentacles, that their tentacles are poisonous, and when a fish gets caught, the tentacles all guide the fish towards the anemone's mouth.

I've always found jellyfish particularly horrifying because they're literally mindless, they just float around aimlessly and yet their sting is severely painful and in some species' case is deadly.

I've always had a soft spot for sharks and the Thresher has always been a favourite, and not just because it can almost be called a Thrasher

Coconut crabs are cool.

Apparently they're none too bright, though. If you see one up a tree, you can grab a handful of grass and stick it halfway up the trunk. When the crab is coming down, it'll see the grass and think it's at the bottom of the tree. It lets go and falls to the ground.

Beautiful.

Coconut crabs are brilliant. I have them as beasties in my fantasy mythos, except in my universe they can fly, with the clattering of their chitinous wings being an omen of death. Instead of Coconut Crabs, they're known as Skull Drummers.

Rockin'!

As some of you will be unsurprised, I've not seen anything new in this thread, but it's still great anyway, and I feel the need to give my own contributions:

The black dragonfish:

Image
Image

Acanthaster planci - the Crown-of-Thorns starfish, my personal favourite echinoderm and probably my favourite sea creature of all. Well, I say favourite, the one I personally find most interesting:

Image
Image

This bad boy feeds on coral (preferably of the genus Acropora but it will eat anything) and can occur in plagues, which decimate large areas of reef. Up to nineteen arms, up to a metre and a half wide and covered in toxic spines. They've been shown to cause apoptosis in rat liver cells. Only a few things eat 'em, but they include:

NAPOLEON WRASSE!! (Cheilinus undulatus)

Image

Also, the Giant Triton Charonia tritonis.

Image

Other awesome things include nudibranchs, or Sea Wizards:

http://www.potjes.net/underwater_photo/ ... h_p_72.jpg (image too big for the screen)
Image
Image

Other amazing things are tunicates, the oldest known chordates (possessing the things that all chordates have - a post-anal tail, a notochord, pharyngeal slits and a dorsal nerve chord). It's amazing to thing that we evolved from this:

Anyone mention the Oarfish? If not:

i would just like to point out, since we recently had a cryptozoology thread here, that the oarfish is likely the main "culprit" in supposed sea serpent sightings. You can see for yourself:

(actual photo)

They usually aren't seen in a horizontal position though; when they hunt, they do so vertically (so they can see their prey's outline better against the sun). Normally the only time one sees a horizontal oarfish is if it's ill.

I think.

I'm not really sure what kind of shark this is, but I don't really understand what the advantages of that long tail are.

Through research, I determined it is. But I still wonder what the point of the exceptionally long tail is.

Ha, Beast Wars ruled.

The Mantis Shrimp, as I recall, can see an incredible spectrum of light with those eyes. Vastly more complex than our own--they can see ultraviolet light, and reportedly, every color we can. Imagine being able to see all that crap. You could see the very light that's giving you skin cancer.
