It was pretty average overall. The snuff film scenes and the last ten or twenty minutes were the only parts that really made it stand out for me. The annoying Ethan Hawke tried his best to counteract that stuff...

Anyone ever see Windigo? It's a found footage movie based on the whole Slender Man thing that's free to watch on Youtube.

For a second I thought you were talking about Wendigo, a very respectable atmospheric horror film by Larry Fessenden.

I remember seeing that movie when I was about 14. I actually liked it...was weirdly atmospheric.

I might check that one out just because Patricia Clarkson's in it.

But yeah, Windigo I plan on watching tonight once there's no noise around me since I like to (try and) become really engrossed in the whole found footage thing. I expect it to be at least alright since Slender Man when done decently can be very suspenseful.

I'm surprised. I knew you hated Fessenden's next film, The Last Winter, and both shared quite a few similarities (as all of his films do). You should try watching Wendigo again, now that you've curated a taste for films you like and films you don't.

The only thing for me is that when I read the term "atmospheric horror" I instantly think "artsy fartsy horror", like what Antichrist is.

Speaking of Antichrist, I do not get why everyone is so head over heels for that movie. It's just an art movie that has a porno scene and an admittedly somewhat uncomfortable vagina mutilation. Beyond that, I don't see what the big deal is with it at all.

The main thing I had with The Last Winter was how annoying all of the characters were, and how banal every single line that came out of their mouths was - mostly a lot of horrible hamfisted propaganda type stuff, when it wasn't just silly attempts at drama. Ruined any kind of atmosphere I might've gotten from it...yeah I may see Wendigo again sometime, I remember not totally loving it either, but it had a kind of charm to it anyway. Who knows. I'll track it down sometime.

I'm not ''head over heels'' with Antichrist, but I think it's a pretty good movie which more than succeeds at establishing it's atmosphere and being an interesting watch. I didn't really find it unsettling, but I enjoyed that it didn't pull punches and thought it was beautifully filmed.

The Tomb of Ligeia: A Corman take on a Poe classic with Vincent Price in the lead. What could go wrong? Well, a bunch of things, but fortunately that isn't the case here. It is shoddy in places, yes, but still chilling and works perfectly.

You Can't Take It with You: An outdated comedy. James Stewart is his hodgypodgy self - Feels like he can't act. He is just horsing around, hamming it up real bad. Jean Arthur is wonderfully charming and the two old men (Barrymore and Arnold) are great as well, but really, most of the humor just hasn't stood the test of time and doesn't transfer to this day and age. We all know how it goes and ends. The rich and greedy old man comes around and finds that money doesn't bring happiness, but giving it away does.

Klute: The first installment in Pakula's trilogy. Donald Sutherland as a private eye looking into the disappearance of a corporate manager in the big city and Jane Fonda as the hooker he was supposedly involved with. It's more of a character study of Fonda's prostitute and her attempted climb out of the job and its charms and viles as well as pitfalls - physical and mental. Oh, there's the 'conspiracy' in the background, but it's all rather simplistic and forgettable and merely serves as a plot device to get some excitement into the film - to sell it to producers and a wider audience. It's interesting, but ultimately a tad annoying with its self-importance.

Annie Hall: Another outdated comedy. I can see where the draw is/was, but I can't say I actually laughed at anything in the film. You can see its huge influence on other similar comedies and how Allen tried to duplicate it with some of his later films.

Destry Rides Again: Yet another film with outdated comedy integrated into it and yet another James Stewart film where he hams it up. Just so you know, I don't really choose these films myself nor do I give them that much attention. The nationally owned TV channel just airs classic films at a certain timeslot and recently it's been comedic James Stewart films *shrug*. There's a certain theme to it - wits and talk is better than violence and force - but setting it in a western just seems kinda silly. But I understand the point. Marlene Dietrich is the female lead and while her song performances are top notch, not much attention was given to the cinematography at these parts so they're kind of lackluster. She's not the most enchanting of actresses either.

The Long Riders: An 1980 film on the James & Younger gang, notable for casting siblings as the James, Younger, Miller and Ford siblings. As these Jesse James portrayals tend to be, it is quite romanticized. Jesse James is a rebel hero, not a proper crook. It's an alright film, but nothing too exciting. Only reason for seeing it really is that I remembered the death scene from a viewing way back when I was very young and have been looking for the film for a long time. Finally found it. It's perhaps the writing that's most at fault here. The Keachs, Carradines, Quaids and Guests all bring a strong performance.

Pumpkinhead: don't know how you other horror fanatics feel about this, but I'd managed to overlook it. I thought it was pretty badass and it has oodles of atmosphere. The soft blues and harsh yellows/oranges are always interesting to look at and it all feels sort of like a dream. The synth music is perfect, the rural/fairytale setting unusual, and it has Lance Henriksen with dentures. All that, plus the monster looks fucking cool. It feels like it's over in a flash too, very watchable movie.

The first Pumpkinhead was great. Lance Henriksen is good even when he's in total crap.

Now Pumpkinhead II on the other hand...

Pumpkinhead is awesome. One of the unsung 80s horror classics. Just a feast of great, creative lighting and atmosphere and a bunch of kids getting picked off by one of horror's last great monsters. The second one was retarded though. Apparently there are a ton of other sequels after that too...eh.

I love that it's just so straight up and dark. It has zero humour and then it ends abrubtly, and suitably.

Wikipedia says there were only two sequels, both of which came out in the mid-2000s. Both are TV movies and both have Lance Henriksen in them. The third movie also has Doug Bradley in it.

There was also a PC game that came out based on the 2nd movie in the 90s called "Bloodwings: Pumkinhead's Revenge". Spoony fans know about it, how it has nothing to do with the movie at all outside of film clips, and how it's a terrible game.

Yeah, Doug Bradley, a real sign of quality right there.

You know, watching Taxi Driver...it's best just to pretend Robert DeNiro didn't make any movies after about, the year 2002 or so. Because, really everything after that was embarrassing.

I mostly agree, but he sometimes still demonstrates small flashes of brilliance. Silver Linings Playbook being a recent example. But can he still carry a movie like he did in Midnight Run, one of my favourite films? No.

After sitting through all of those Hellraiser films I watched last year, I don't see a reason why I should beat around the bush. ;)

Cradle are one of my favorite bands, so of course I was gonna say that.

Also, Nightbreed. That movie is really underrated.

Hellraiser 1 and 2 are excellent, and everything up to the one where they go into the video game ranges from alright to bad. The video game movie was crap, and the most recent one that they did without Doug Bradley was just all around terrible.

Nothing after the first one is anything resembling what I'd call good...or even halfway decent. Even the first one is just OK at best. They're pretty much the bottom of the barrel for horror movies, right along with Candyman and the TCM sequels. And Poltergeist III.

Candyman I loved. I thought Tony Todd was creepy as hell as he always is and Phillip Glass's score was excellent. Chainsaw Massacre 2 I somewhat enjoy just because of how cartoonishly gory it is.

Poltergeist III I've never seen, but I've heard nothing but bad things about it.

I support the praise for the first Pumpkinhead movie. That motherfucker is only a step below the likes of the Xenomorph and Freddy when it comes to horror movie icons.

I seem to be the only one in the world that loves Hellraiser 4.
The only ones that are truly dreadful are Hellseeker, Hellworld and Revelations.
I watched Nightbreed a long time ago, but I remember it being a bit of a mindfuck in terms of creature design. Needless to say I watched it because of CoF.

Agreed. I saw a DeNiro film today - A Bronx Tale - and he was brilliant in it. He hadn't lost his edge at that point (1993). Even in Heat a couple years later he was still good.

Midnight Run is the buddy film I wish I watched growing up but somehow didn't. It's perfectly paired with of Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Dutch.

Poltergeist III will always be better than that messily regurgitated turd of a second movie. Not scary, not interesting and majorly boring. At least the third one tried something different. It almost verges on Twin Peaks oddness and that's not an easy task.

As evident in The Nature of the Beast and Survival Quest. I honestly thought I was in for a quality movie with the maker of Phantasm and Lance Henriksen commanding the scene, unfortunately not.

Well I watched Windigo (A Slender Man Movie) tonight.

Oh my fucking god.

It's the worst movie I have ever seen in my life. It's about a group of teenagers making the worst documentary ever getting hunted by Slender Man, and it's 93 minutes of absolutely horrendous EVERYTHING. I am amazed at how bad that was. It sucked every dick that could possibly be sucked. For the first hour and eight minutes, exactly THREE things of importance happen. Slender Man's origin story (which is insanely confusing), a chick getting lured into the woods by Slender Man, and a dude getting attacked by Slender Man. That's fucking IT. Everything else is them keeping the camera rolling between takes, multiple failed takes of interviews, way too much b-roll of the trees, and the occasional Marble Hornets moment of camera and audio distortion when Slender Man's in the vicinity of the main characters. The acting sucks, there are a bunch of scenes that do absolutely NOTHING for the plot, and the climax and ending is the most confusing and painful to watch 15 minutes I've ever seen in a movie.

Also, the end credits song is FUCKING TERRIBLE.

That shoot out is intense and firmly etched my brain, I like how the music cuts out at that point and you just hear the reverberation of the gunshots.

As good as the creature designs were, I was way more fascinated with the appearance of David Cronenberg in an acting role, that and his sock puppet mask was legendary.

For her friends to not pull out so I wouldn't have to go to keep her company. I was expecting nothing, thus I didn't actually review it at all.

Trespass (1992) - 2/5

Don't believe the 'underrated action gem' praise, this is not Judgement Night fun but a lesson in bad acting 101. Two fire fighters, Bill Paxton and William Sadler, uncover a treasure map from a suicidal priest that tells of a place in St. Louis which hides gold. They narrow it down to an abandoned building and go exploring, but little do they know of the gangsters doing a hit on the roof. You can guess what happens next and it's truly face-palm worthy to the highest degree, tv-movie editing and dialogue so shoddy you'll hit repeat just to be sure, melodramatic breakdown speeches that try to inject a sense of importance to a bunch of emotionally unintelligent children and none of the characters are likeable so it's all very dream-like and unsuspenseful. I gave it a two because it was so bad that it mildy amused me and had me laughing.

The Oblong Box
Watched this old horror movie from 1969 last night which had an 18 / R rating back in day but is utterly tame. Average movie of an Edgar Allan Poe story which is mainly watchable for the acting of Vincent Price & Christopher Lee. 6/10

Last night I viewed Witchfinder General with the mastermind Vincent Price and was greatly disappointed.
The occasional one-liners were entertaining but I can say the same of little else in that film. At least the sensuous voice of Mr. Price helped to lull me to sleep.
