One of my most favorite fine artists of all time. I got into him about a year ago, when my art teacher was teaching me about expressionism and impressionism. Anyone have a favorite piece? His art, to me, is very... metallic. For such a religious man, his art was so full of dark and violent imagery.

He's my second favourite artist right after Pieter Brueghel the Elder.

I love how his style is so ahead of it's time. A lot of it doesn't even look like paintings, more like collages. He's very good at giving his art a very realistic feel. His highlighting and shadows are out of this worldly good.

Do you like Pieter Brueghel the Elder? They have a very similar style and both come from the same place

I do like Peter's art, though I notice his art is less about Hell on Earth and more about life and people. Hell, Peter was heavily influenced by Bosch.

What does Impressionism and Expressionism have to do with Bosch?

My art teacher told me Bosch was part of the Expressionist movement.

impressionism and expressionism are far from Bosch and Brueghel. While those two artists have a strong dependence on detail and concrete figures, colors and limits, those two stiles try to be as far away from "defined" as possible when it comes to colors, lines and figures. I honestly don't see what Impresionism and expresionism have to do with Bosch and Brueghel.

Time to get a new teacher?

I don't know much about him, but I do know the progressive death metal band with the same name, and they are extremely cool.

I was about to mention them myself.

I think his works are interestion, but I'm not that fascinated by them. They're good, but that's about all to me.

Besides HR Giger and a few select others, he is by far my favorite artist... we have a huge reprint of one of his works in my basement.

I like Giger's work, but I have a lot of trouble finding images on the net. His site has a few but I was hoping for more.

It seems clear to me that his use of such imagery was an attempt by him to make something so shocking to the common person that it would convert them to god.

His art is deffinitely surreal at times, but I feel that it lacks any deep emotional connection to the subjects unless they are of a sublime, deeply religious nature.

That was one of the most insane WTF's I've had in a while. And prog metal... I hope they heavy up the high-register synth keys ala Children of Bodom.

I liked his perspective. He had a huge sense of spacing and filling the painted world. Not to mention that he had a grandiose sense of grotesquery, too! Goya and him were spearheads.

I'll tell ya, in Expressionism, painters worth checking are Emil Nolde, Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff (my favorite!), Max Pechstein, Macke, Kandinsky, Kirchner, Heckel and Franz Marc. Don't tell me about Munch, don't like his style at all.

Yep, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Very good, but as I was saying, Schmidt-Rottluff all over the place.

Bosch rules. You can see a little bit of 'Garden' in the guy's head on 'Coma of Souls,' which I always thought looked funny.

I don't think he said exactly "Bosch is expressionism". We were in the middle of discussing stuff like Monet and Van Gogh, and I told him about how I liked art from metal albums, and he brought up Bosch. I might've just miss understood him. :\
