Not sure why you specified April 1st. That whole captcha thing is completely real.

I know it has to be a joke. Reminds me of when they threw down "Korn" in the archives and everyone lost their minds.

Since HellBlazer already coded it, what do you think of taking the more readable logos and using that to replace the security question for registration? It'd be enough to stop bots, with Black/Become/Manilla/Putridity/Warning, and I don't think any real people would fail it.

Wouldn't bots simply be able to reverse image search the logos?

Then again the current question is way easier to automate.

I work with pattern recognition. If you really want to make sure bots won't pass, add some jitter to the pics and rotate them at random angles. Blocking the pics will also help preventing people from searhing it on google, so only real true metalheads will be allowed to enter.
Also, to prevent brute force (it not cost effective, but false metalheads might try all the 100000² combinations so they can enter the site), you should limit the number of tries too. I think one chance is enough for a true metalhead.

True metalheads can read logos and shit. I want to believe.

That was great, I tried to decipher the logos I got, I think I was close on one of them. When I came back to the site when I got to work one of my logos was the old Immortal which I actually recognized :)

Wonder if you'll retain this snarky attitude once the feature goes live.

These are legit bands that you need to know though. Manilla Warning's Awaken The Crystal Specter Guardian Within the Gates Logic is a classic.

All I know is I saw the captcha box come up and INSTANTLY thought, "Yep, April Fool's Day joke." I knew Immortal right away but drew a total blank on the other. Then the other two logos came up and I thought, "Screw it. I'll leave it empty." I got the, "Only a human can screw up so badly," line and thus endeth April Fool's Day. Well, then again, another forum I'm on is still calling itself the Pretty In Pink Forums.

"Revenge" was the logo I had trouble with. It took me a couple tries to get that one right. Clever idea for a logo though. Is the band any good, I wonder?

Hmmm...If I pay the sixty six bucks a month that means I can go add Slipknot and Mudvayne right? (not that I would, mind you!)

I immediately knew that the indecipherable captcha thing was an April Fool's joke, I mean, MA's been driving users mad on April Fool's Day for years. Remember when they had their homepage look like the government seized their domain? Wow. That was before I got an account!

I kinda miss the little logo puzzles. Made me feel better after I couldn't solve the newspaper's sudoku.

I liked it. I think it should be permanent. I got mine on the second try (Pagan Altar wizard symbol + Morrigan). The first one was some insanely unreadable brutal death or black metal logo, but I did get Revenge on that one.

I'm kinda sad I missed out on the April Fools shenanigans. I didn't see any of the captcha stuff.
Did anyone take a screen shot (more importantly, why the hell do I care)?

EDIT: Ha... never mind. I see someone else already requested a screen cap... I guess that makes me feel better for asking.

This year's joke actually got me for a little bit because it seemed plausible. Not real-life/common sense plausible, but certainly internet-plausible. Most stuff in the world seems to be moving in the direction hinted at by the fake post.

Also, I got the logos pretty easily. If you ever did want to keep bots/posers out, that would be a good way to do it.

Yeah, lots of bots lately especially on the forums. Might be worth looking into.

It was my suggestion at the eleventh hour to give up the gambit on the captcha at some point during the day to throw people off; basically admitting that it was the April Fools prank and the membership feature wasn't.

I think the idea is really cool, but I don't think it would really "keep the posers out". In fact, it'd probably keep a lot of people who love metal out. Like, let's say there's a person who really likes NWOBHM stuff, and has been a fan of stuff like Judas Priest all their life. One day, they tried out black metal, one day they tried out death, but they didn't really like it, so they stuck with what they liked. They learn about this awesome site that serves as a massive database for metal, and they wants to make an account to meet new people. However, they can't make an account because they can't read a jumbled mass of lines which has been purposely designed to be illegible, for aesthetic effects. So, someone who has been a lifelong fan of metal (albeit one with little diversity in their tastes) has been locked out of a community of people who they can most likely relate to. Point being, not everyone who can't read a black/death logo is a "poser"; I can guarantee that if you were to create a logo using just a random word, and show it to a crowd of metal fans, a lot of them wouldn't be able to read it. I've actually tried it out before, although the sample size wasn't really large. I mean, hell, I still can't even make some out (Looking at you, Korgonthurus).

Fuck those people. I say the site should require proof of ownership of at least one Vlad Tepes original demo tape (no bootlegs!) to authenticate membership.

Revenge are good but i don't think they are uniformly liked. Anyway one of my favorites in the bestial black/ war metal substyle.
