For those uninitiated, NBN stands for National Broadband Network, which is being slowly rolled out across Australia . At the moment, Australian Broadband is at its maximum, 12MB per second by cable, or 24MB per second by ADSL. The NBN alledges speeds of up to 50MBS. This new broadband network network has been a hotly contested issue throughout the political campaign. Out of interest, how does this proposed internet speed compare with speeds overseas?

i should have explained it, thanks for explaining for me

from the sounds of things it will be much more difficult for Abbott to get anything done because of how much power the independents have(one who recently has been filmed having a kangaroo "droppings" fight) really explains politics in Australia but its hard to stomach he is our prime minister it may not be easy for him to do anything which is great, just like the past few years

I didn't vote for Tony Abbott, but he's here, so all we can do is hope he does a good job. :)

I love how we voted in an unemployed guy who has never even been to Canberra to the senate, purely because the Motorsport Enthusiast's Party was a fun looking name.

Apparently he only attracted 0.22% of the primary vote and got in through party preference deals. I don't know about most people, but that system of senate election looks pretty flawed.

The best part is the Australian Sports Party winning a senate seat in WA with only 1,908 primary votes.

Preferences can be funny things!

We have always needed a Bogan Party. Think of the adverts: "If you've ever left your baby on a tram, we understand! Vote Bogan!"

Talk of Bill Shorten becoming the next ALP leader is growing. This is the man who was the architect behind the ousting of Kevin Rudd in 2010, and the man who then knifed Julia Gillard to return Rudd to power this year.

Since I lived in Maribyrnong for a few years a while back, I hated Shorten before he was publicly known as a douchenozzle. :p

I am actually pretty shocked how certain it is that Rudd's out of the job, I mean, did they really expect him to reverse a deficit that massive in what, two months?

Not siding with that asshat, but Poland's status as a first world country is somewhat questionable, as it is often for ex-soviet countries. That's not the thread's subject though.

Everyone wants things done quickly.

Related thought: does anyone expect Abbott to make it through a full term? Rudd and Gillard never did.

I think he will. Liberal's have certainly done unity a hundred times better than labour have the last few years. Long as he does ok in the polls.. you'd expect him to get one full term in at least

Two terms minimum with the possibility of a hand off with 12 months to run into the 2019 election. Five years in the sun for Abbott and a third term for the Coalition by avoiding the leadership rancour that plagued the Libs in 06/07 with Howard and Costello.

I just want to make an observation about the generally young blokes on here and their overwhelming affinity with the left and silly comments like the Coalition being the devil (actually Satan??) on social issues... Yes I was stirring the other night but it was late... and a Friday... but it's not my intent to be condescending now... It's perfectly natural for youth in general to have a more progressive (horrible term) outlook and a stronger belief in social issues, saving the planet from CAGW and donating to the latest polar bear non-extinction fund but I'll tell you something... Somewhere in the vicinity of 40 odd percent of you under 35 years of age who identify with the left now, won't in the second half of your lives. Now if that statement refers to you, then you probably think it's patently ridiculous and I'm still being a condescending dickhead, but it's not and I'm not. It has been consistently shown since we've been doing this whole votey democracy thingy that, in general, the youth will vote with the left and older generations identify with the right. As you get older, have more responsibility, a family and are quite possibly leveraged up to your eyeballs to have a nice house and yard for your girl and kids then you start to realise that just maybe the polar bears are doing okay and you'd much prefer to see your hard earned going towards better roads and policing rather than a heroin injecting room for those poor folk who have nothing better to do with their lives and will never make a contribution to society. (this is a deliberately arseholey analogy, btw)

Now maybe that sounds like I'm the devil when it comes to social issues and I'm a cold hearted neo-con but, like I said, a lot more of you are going to think the same way in twenty years than what you realise. I'm sorry but it's a fact.

And remember, "If you're not a socialist at 20 you haven't got a heart. If you're still a socialist at 40 you haven't got a brain".

Peace, all.

hey buddy, you're as bad as all the other dudes that play the "old but wise" card on the forum. Almost as irritating as the 13 year olds.

And remember, "Just because you put a saying in quotes, doesn't make it fact". Asshat.

Oh UtUmNo1, you sure know how to give me a headache.

First that thing that conservatives know how to fix the economy by definition, I hope my post about how in 90% of the time when they are elected in any country of the world it just doesn't happen made you think about that a bit. Not trying to sway you, you are entitled to your position, but presenting something as universal truth when 90% of the time it turns out to be horseshit, well, that just doesn't work.

Anyway, about your latest post... Where to start? Let me just say this: What you say might be one hundred percent true and accurate in Australia, I live on the other side of the planet, so compared to me, you're the expert. But you don't stop at presenting your point as the truth in Australia, you present it as universally true in any democracy on the planet, and that just reeks of a complete lack of fact-checking.

Okay, your first point is that when you're past your mid-30s and settle down with job and family, you want a government that takes care of your needs as a working man and a husband and father, and you say that in any democracy on the planet it's the conservatives that do that. Again, that may be true in Australia, but in most other countries I've observed, including my own, that is far from the truth. In fact, here in Germany and in many other European countries it is the center-left parties that fight for job security and all you need to take care of your family. Conservatives? They take care of big business getting richer laying off anyone they can and paying no taxes. Great, the common man sure profits from that. Nah, in Germany, if you want to settle down as a working man, husband and father you vote social-democrat, because they are the party that takes care of such needs.

Your second point is that the left is what young people vote, and that conservatives are what the grown-ups vote. Again, that may be true in Australia, but of course you don't stop at saying "Here in Australia it's like this", no, you again present this as the universal truth in every democracy on the planet, and again, you don't know what you are talking about. Yes, extremist left-wing parties such as the marxist-leninist party or the communist party only attract very young voters over here, but look at the voter base of the major center-left parties in Europe, such as the social democrats in Germany, or hell, even the socialists. I assure you, the vast majority of their voters are well above 35. The cut-off point between center-left and center-right over here is not age, it's urban vs rural. Age has nothing to do with it.

Like I said, not trying to sway you in your position, and like I said, what you wrote may be perfectly true for Australia, but don't pretend that it applies to every democratic country on the planet without doing any fact-checking first. Basically, don't post nonsense about the rest of the planet when you are unable to look past your country's borders. Thank you.

CDU/CSU and AfD, to name two relevant for the election in September centre-right German parties, in their electoral campaigns cater, in my opinion, to the petite bourgeoisie's fears of progressing social disintegration -- e. g., excess of immigrant population, loss of significance of the bürgerliche Kleinfamilie, threats to economic prosperity --, without actually taking adequate action against their sources; Volker Bouffier's (CDU, current minister-president of the federal state of Hesse) electoral campaign for the Hessian Landtag elections in September, for example, is centered, as far as I can see, almost exclusively around the assertion of "voting CDU guarantees safety and well-being for all of you elderly folks!" -- it's a hotchpotch of superannuation of the population and collapsing, if not already obsolete, social conducts of life to which there are, from the standpoint of the segments of society concerned, no apparent alternatives (see governmental actions of CDU/CSU like, e. g., Betreuungsgeld which are, essentially, actions of self-deceit about the increasing difficulties to maintain the burgeois family model of a wage labourer father and a homemaker mother). German civil society currently stands, in my opinion, at the peak (?) of a crisis of political and social emancipation, a democratic crisis, if you will, which will continue if established and popular centre-right politics (of suppression of the public sphere) are continued. In the present, these cannot provide a social imaginary of integrative power that would correspond with the future global developments of Western society anymore.

Now, having done with this tract, I hope for a change of government and will vote accordingly, but I cannot shake off worries about an ongoing of the Merkel government.

The CDU doesn't have ANY campaign this election. There are occasional hints at speaking for or against something, but in essence their entire campaign is based on the popularity of Angela Merkel, which is why they don't even have any slogans or anything on their campaign signs, just Merkel's face plastered on each and every one of them.

As I said earlier, the SPD isn't much better. I don't know who the fuck manages their election campaign but it has been pitiful so far. They have run out of things to say years to say and base their entire campaign on "yeah, we'll somehow be better than the CDU. We don't know how, but vote for us, we'll be better."

AfD - don't get me started. What a fucking disgrace.

---------------------------------------------------------

Unrelated to the post above, I'd like to add that I didn't mean for other countries that had/have September elections, such as Norway recently or Austria a week after Germany to be left out in this thread. Norwegians, Austrians, feel free to post your feelings about your own elections.

I still have trouble comprehending this. That woman has no profile. Her profile is that she levitates above politics, unmoved by the petty ongoings around her. She could be replaced by a soulless robot that simply produces empty, distracting phrases in accordance with party policy and nobody would notice. In that regard their poster campaign is pretty honest.

Their campaign is marginally less vague and suggestive than that of the CDU, but they are basically advertising to fix problems they created themselves with Agenda 2010 and other such cruel pranks.

So she did the only sane (and completely brilliant) thing, and moved to Canada. I mean, Harper's not the best thing ever, but he's not fucking Abbott.

Also, Motorsport, at least Harper never flat-out blocked gay marriage. What with it being legal here, and all..

The good thing about Tony Abbott being Prime Minister is how everyone I know wants him to be wedgied with those farkin red speedos and then be forced to eat them while cranking, meanwhile him crying "Man of Steel*, where art Thou, hast thy forgotten thy dumbo eared son!" over a red shit smeared mouthful of lycra or whatever that crap is.

* Not a reference to Tony's knickers. George W Bush actually nicknamed our last Liberal Prime Minister (which means Conservative, because we live in the southern hemisphere and are backwards) the Man of Steel.

Save us Batman.

Actually Batman founded Melbourne, Oh fark this, I'm out.

Yeah, Abbott is scrapping all climate change factions in government, I think, and abolishing the carbon tax (or so he claims). Not sure if this is the right move, and maybe he doesn't believe in climate change, but he's certainly not fucking around for the time being.

It just strikes me as kind of ridiculous. The thing about science is that it's true regardless whether you believe it or not, and if man made climate change were a hoax, that insight could be provided by science as well. But scrapping the comission that's supposed to collect this very expertise simply comes across like sticking your fingers in your ears and shouting "lalalalala".

Kind of what I expect from a devout Christian. It makes sense from a party point of view too I guess, as scrapping that commission means more money pouring into the treasury coffers.

Because expert commissions are known to eat tons of money :nono:

Election day. Don't forget to vote fellow Krauts! And remember, for organisatory reasons all voters of right-rextremist parties (NPD, FDP etc.) are officially asked to visit the polls next Sunday instead of this one! http://www.der-postillon.com/2013/09/bu ... teilt.html

the commission, despite what a lot of those articles say, wasn't really doing a hell of a lot. Fairly big blow up over something very minor.

Carbon tax (and for that matter the mining tax), meanwhile, is the sort of thing that eastern staters support because it means they can take even more money out of the west. No one in WA actually supports it- "a government that robs peter to pay paul can always depend on the support of Paul". Was really poorly thought out. Punitive, really.

Speaking of science, the new government doesn't have a Minister for Science making it the first government in 80 years to not have a portfolio for science and scientific research. That was scrapped along with the mental health and tertiary education, among other portfolios.

You know what we have now? A minister for sport, a minister for border protection, and a minister for ANZAC Day. This is like the bogan parliament.

its scary how there is no minister for mental health considering how much of a problem that is becoming over here and worldwide, getting rid of science is expected though

Percentages right now:
FDP: 4.7
AfD: 4.9
Let's fucking hope they both stay under 5 percent and thereby out of the parliament. Because
SPD: 26
Linke: 8.3
Grüne: 8.1
Which means that a left coalition could beat the
CDU: 42
with only 0.4 percent advantage. Hooooly shit.
I need something to calm me the fuck down.

Edit: Now it's a fucking tie.
Edit2: CDU is 0.9% in the lead now. :( At least the FDP lost 0.1%.

Noooooooooooooo, latest news indicate the CDU/CSU might be able to form a government without a coalition partner. :(

Actually their lead just shrunk to 0.5 percent. Anything could happen.
Here's a live-updated monitor: http://wahl.tagesschau.de/wahlen/2013-0 ... ndex.shtml

Edit: Red-Red-Green is in the lead again with 0.2%. They can beat the CDU with at least one seat, or am I missing something here?
I hope Red-Green does the fucking responsible thing now.

(Here Steinbrück says the CDU pretty much won and implies the SPD would rather form a coalition with the CDU than with Red-Green)

:fuck: This party is a fucking disgrace!

Edit: Now there's a 0.6% majority for Red-Red-Green if only the SPD would get their heads out of their goddamn asses.

Everyone who voted for the SPD, prepare to see your party become the lapdog of the CDU. It already happened over here in the Netherlands. The VVD (our CDU) won the latest elections, and formed a coalition with the PVDA (our SPD) Now everyone who voted for the PVDA is pissed because the PVDA is pretty much throwing away all their ideals under the guise of compromise.

Yeah, they already sold out on their ideals back when Schröder was chancellor, but now would be their chance to at least make a step back in the right direction.
Btw, R/R/G's lead has grown to 0.8/4 seats now.

And the media is all like "almost absolute majority for Merkel's party". And yet there are still 27% non-voters. Absolute majority my ass.
