I describe it as a symphonic bang, it's obviously an orchestral element and I describe the bang as very firm and sudden with some sort of metallic sound to it. Here's an example: http://youtu.be/B9cDIA5rD-g?t=6m6s. It plays about 3 times. Does anyone know what it's called?

Yeah, it would be classified as a "hit" for sure but that can encompass so many sounds. That's the idea anyway. As for instruments, I think it's just some really cheap synthetic strings with some reverb. It's not exactly metallic but I see where you would get that.

I thought you were talking about the metallic drum sound I had asked about a year or two back. Nightwish has utilized it their last couple of albums, and it was also present on the Lord Of The Rings soundtrack (such as when the camera was panning through Isengard after Saruman's betrayal). Same orchestra group, I know. (London Philharmonic)

he's right, it is an orchestral stab.

there are lots of different stabs you'll have heard in pop/dance/hip-hop music.
