Blugh, it'd help to actually learn Cyrillic someday. :durr:

Noted this as well. If it helps, the mojibake equivalent of "ё" is "¸" (I don't know what's the equivalent for the capital "ё", but it's never used as the first letter, apart from swearwords).

Excellent summary. Perhaps you can post it in here too if you wish.

Since now!

I was thinking more of "used in metal bandnames/album titles/song names" but I'd admit I totally forgot these, thanks for pointing out.
*immediately looks for Ёлочный Ёж on the MA*

Here's a band richly in need of corrections. :D

Don't worry, I've dug up the actual character maps for the character sets. :D Should be able to nut out a more reliable encoder (as opposed to the current map I'm using, which was just based on somebody else's list of Mojibake corrections. )

Plenty of mojibake here to fix, if anybody wants to have a crack at it. :)

Japanese-flavoured 'bake, BTW.

Most of S.O.B.'s lyrics are mucked up, same goes for a lot of japanese bands. I'll see what I can do about cleaning it up over the next few days.

Used online translation to get the general idea of what it says.

I remember there was a site called Siamese metal, focusing on Thai metal scenes and doing review of metal music worldwide. Sadly though, it was already closed. The internet archive wayback machine does not have the pages for Thai bands from this site...

I don't understand Thai at all. Does anyone know of a Thai veteran user?

Just out of interest, anybody ever tried running an unsuccessful Thai mojibake repair through Google Translate? :D

Shit's hilarious.

Okay, I've repaired the titles of คลั่ง ("Rave"), but I think the original MA tracklist was wrong... And the copy of the album I downloaded has differing track durations, so... I've removed 'em from the MA tracklist until somebody can find an unambiguous, official tracklist.

The track data I've added there was taken from the band's official site (which mentions nothing of a re-release whatsoever)

BTW, I've left the "lyrics" in there because they need cleaning up too... aaaand so far, Google hasn't turned up anything.

No results found for "THE POLLUTION DEPEND ON YOU". Results for THE POLLUTION DEPEND ON YOU (without quotes):

Somebody might need to contact the guy who originally added the album and ask for lyrics, because it might've been an original transcription. :(

Okay, gotta scoot, guys. But before I go, I found this for Blue Planet's album:

It's got the track titles written on it, but I don't know two shits worth of Thai... aaaand there's too many letters on this keyboard that look the same. :(

Good luck! :D

Original Cyrillic names for Russian bands:
Now in MA database Russian and post-Soviet bands names presented as English translations or transcriptions (and sometimes with grammar mistakes), but also exist exceptions such as "Алик Грановский", for example. "Алик Грановский" that's absolutely correct name of this project, and other Russian/post-Soviet bands also deserves correct original Cyrillic names. English translations/transcriptions can be inserted as alternate spelling. Those, who own the rights to rename bands, can do this important work, others can do reports (but it's required to enter in report original Cyrillic name).

Your thoughts about it?

The issue might be tricky. Say, if I want to browse the list of bands from Russia, and I see a lot of names in Cyrillic, I would not be able recognize the bands easily (I do know how to convert Cyrillics to Latins, but many do not) even if the band is famous in its romanized name. If we furthermore give bands Chinese names or Japanese names, most of the western users will be totally lost.

Anyway, I do like the idea. I suggest that we make a tab for romanized names to appear on both the band pages and the band lists (whether a search list or a list of bands from a particular country). So on the band page of Алик Грановский, there should a romanized name tab "Alik Granovsky".

For Chinese bands, I entered their original name both in the "alternate spelling" and the additional notes. So for example, on Zuriaake's page, you can read "The band name in Chinese is 葬尸湖. "

As far as I'm concerned, bands should always have their original name as their name, and then a romanized / transliterated version in both the additional notes and alternate spelling.

Just post here whenever you come across a band whose name needs to be changed.

sofeshue: Unless the band has released an English version of the album, translations of the album's name and song should only be shown in the additional notes.

What if a band has two official names in different languages? Say, 施教日 is also officially known as Ritual Day. In this case, should we have "施教日" or "Ritual Day" or "施教日 (Ritual Day)"?

OK. But there are lots of albums / tracks whose titles have "official" English translations that also appear on the cover / back cover, although the songs are sung in the native language. Should these translations stay in the tracklist?

Since this is a English website, we can use the English name as their name; the one in Chinese can be added to the alternate spelling field and the while thing should be explained in the additional notes.

In this case you can leave the translations in the tracklist.

For those correcting wrongly accented names for Czech artists, MusicMight.com (or "RockDetector.com", or whatever other bloody domain names they use) has a pretty decent database. :)

http://www.musicmight.com/artist/czech+ ... gue/orient

I'm going through and correcting artist names using this list, here... There's also links to other bands (some MA, some not) that the previous line-ups didn't include. :)

Just stumbled across a nifty little tool that might help with repairing Mojibake(s). :)

http://illegalargumentexception.blogspot.com/2009/09/java-character-inspector-application.html

And for anybody wondering, the characters "" are the mangled remains of ""... which indicates the original letter was lost in the first place. =)

You can change it to:

Самоубийство Грешников Ада
Парадигма
Линия Жизни (Life Line)
Счастье Для Всех

And I've changed song titles.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ruined/99317

This page is fucked up. A lot of wrong and suspicious info. I have tried my best to fix it. The famous album "The Haunted House" is just a US re-release of 2002 album "흉가". (http://weareinternetfriends.blogspot.co ... /2002.html) The 2004 album 길닦음 is valid (see http://weareinternetfriends.blogspot.co ... -2004.html). Apart from these albums and the 2011 album, all other releases are highly suspicious because they are never mentioned in a Korean site (even I searched the band name in Korean.) The cover arts of "Junk", "Ðê倾 +" (deformed, failed to recover by all means), "Songs for Darkspirits", "泅×Ø" are do not resemble common cover arts. The last track of "Songs for Darkspirits" is written in German, since the band use Korean mostly and a little english, I assume the german title be nearly impossible.

Due to the obscurity of the band, even the Korean database maniadb.com is not reliable. We do need a Korean speaker to look at this page.
