I'm looking for some very loud and melancholic/atmospheric/ambient/depressive black metal with high-pitched vocals. I'd like to put emphasis on loud. A band like ColdWorld don't fit the bill; Austere, Imperium Dekadenz and Woods of Desolation do. It doesn't have to be loud from start to finish, and some quiet parts is just a plus. I obviously don't want any "heavy" or "brutal" bands like Marduk.

Please post sample links.

Best/favorite suggestions:
Gris
Evilfeast
Totalselfhatred

What I mean by "loud":

Because I don't know the technical terms for what I am referring to, and nothing about music production in general, it's somewhat difficult to explain, but I assume it is related to production/mixing. I'd say the new Anaal Nathrakh album is "loud"; Austere's vocals are "loud". Maybe it's simply a lot of treble, and especially loud high pitched vocals. (The links are pointing directly at examples)

I also experience Imperium Dekadenz as very loud, they have sort of the same trebling noise and also a very energetic high-pitched vocalist.

I think Agrypnie are what you're looking for. Proggy black metal with a heavy atmospheric leaning and a good sense of melody, relatively similar to Imperium Dekadenz Also, check out Mgła's latest.

Anyway, I think Gris may fit your bill.

Haven't had time to listen to more than a few seconds yet, but my first impression is that at least Gris and Agrypnie is within the range that I want.

Gris seems closest to the ideal of what I'm looking for. I don't have any objections about the sound.

Agrypnie sounds very similar to Imperium Dekadenz. I've only heard snippets of that Agrypnie song, and I definitely like it, but it might be a bit too progressive for the ideal of what I'm looking for now.

I also like Mgla, but it lacks some of the "loudness" that I'm looking for, including some high-pitched vocals.

On my phone now so can't listen to the bands you mentioned, but my gut feeling is saying Evilfeast:

I think I know what you mean by 'loud,' would October Falls fit the bill? Totalselfhatred and Falls of Rauros spring to mind as well.

Another band that I thought of, that is also within the range I'm looking for is An Autumn For Crippled Children. The vocalist is loud, high-pitched and engaged, but the band's overall sound might be a bit simplistic at times.

Evilfeast is a good suggestion. I checked out a couple songs and they varied a little. My first impression was that the vocalist was a little "unengaged", and the overall sound fairly relaxed, but I checked out another song that I liked much more. So they definitely fit. These guys, and Gris are so far the only spot on bands, while Totalselfhatred fits maybe 90%. I accept varieties (as there is quite a big difference between them and Austere), but Gris and Evilfeast meet all criteria (both mentioned and in my mind).

Even though I haven't really specified it I prefer the more intense bands.

October Falls does not fit. Totalselfhatred does, even though I'm somewhat familiar with them already, and they are a bit slow. I think Falls of Rauros lacks some of the edge that for example Gris has, and only fits to some extent.

Gris and Woods of Desolation have a sort of wall of loud treble. Austere has a very loud high-pitched vocalist, while the Anaal Nathrakh example was overall very loud. I also experience Imperium Dekadenz as very loud, they have sort of the same trebling noise and also a very energetic high-pitched vocalist.

By "loud", you mean a clear and audiable production, right?
Anyway, I'm very fond of this genre, so see if there's some in here that you like. There's a few that are depressive black metal, and a few ambient black metal, but they should still fit the criteria:

You'll want to check out Walknut. Atmospheric black metal with a very thick, intense sound.

Sorry if it's fairly obvious, but maybe Drudkh's Estrangement? Production wise it's fairly clear, yet atmospheric. The vocals are very prominent as well as high pitched and there are some quieter parts scattered throughout the album.

While on the topic of Ukrainian BM, there's also Ulvegr. More abrasive than Drudkh, but again, fairly "loud" production quality. However, while the vocals aren't as high pitched, they're still very prominent.

Well, it sounds to me like possibly my all time favorite black metal band Abigor from Austria might be what you are looking for.

Their album "Verwustung Invoke the Dark Age" is my all time favorite black metal album.

VERY atmospheric, very heavy, ritualistic and pagan, high pitched shrieking despairing vocals, a bit ambient, very cold, very beautiful music.

Check them out.

I think Weakling's "Dead as Dreams" fits the "loud" description. The vocals and instruments are high pitched and wall of noise-ish, and the music is aggressive, at times depessive, and generally loud as f*ck

If you are looking for very loud (but somewhat atmospheric black metal) check out Samael - Above. http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Sa ... ove/222381

I don't know if this is to obvious or not but Forgotten Woods? I happened to be playing them right now.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVz5t-lamlA

Marblebog is another good one from Hungary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIVWDpwnIjI

Also Sortsind one of my favorite depressive black metal bands, pretty maniacal at times: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5nHPD2pO_M

Drowning the Light might be obvious too but the vocals are pretty anguished and high pitched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LX_SBw8sE8

Let me know what you think.
