I was just listening to "Highway Star" by Deep Purple. Somehow, it seems to me to be one of those songs that demands to be listened while driving around.

What are some song that are good to play while just cruising around with no particular destination in particular?

Don't forget King of the Road. It's thematically appropriate.

Thanks for those sludge recommendations.

I think that it really depends on the time of day. The music has to match the mood. I find that in the daylight hours, older rock, blues type stuff makes you feel cool while your driving. Yesterday I found Bob Seger on the radio, and it was great. At night though, my tastes change. An album I frequently take on the road is So Far So Good...So What!, by Megadeth. I don't know why, it just seems to fit.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ri6fs5X-398

Accept - This one's for you
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrlUbSHHlf4

From the band Grave Digger: Lionheart; Excalibur; The Reaper; Son of Evil; Pendragon

Ministry - No W

Iron Maiden - Aces High; Back In The Village; The Number of the Beast; Hallowed Be Thy Name; Flight of Icarus; Running Free; Killers; Afraid to Shoot Strangers; Flash Of The Blade; Deja Vu

If you want I'll add some death metal or stuff but I think that you wouldn't enjoy this genre.

Seconding Kyuss I'd only add the song 100 degrees. Feels like a cruising song for sure.

Pretty much seconding all of that. Can't go wrong with Kyuss, Orange Goblin, and Red Fang. The Sword aint so bad, either (though admitting so seems to cause one to lose one's credibility among some metal fans). :)

I've got a slightly different request now.

Lately I've decided to make a car mix that I can take with me on those long aimless drives with friends. Without a CD, I tend to be a chronic radio flipper. The problem is, I don't have most of the songs I want, so I'm hunting for good music to put on it. I want a variety of stuff that won't get monotonous and start sounding the same.

Currently, I have mostly classic rock, some of the stuff like Kyuss that was recommended to me here, "Hook in the Mouth" by Megadeth, one rap song (Welcome to the Terrordome by Public Enemy), and one country song (All My Exes Live in Texas by George Strait) on my list.

I don't want anything too extreme, although some of the others tend to like alternative stuff.

So maybe put some softer songs in too? I just want something that will flow well.

Maybe the themes from "502" "Anarchy in the U.K." and "Set the World Afire" give that idea, I agree with you there. The blast beats don't hurt it either... :D

I know Kyuss has already been mentioned, but this song by them is perfect:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8VmoqBz9Vg
"hear a purrin motor
and she's a burnin' fuel
push it over baby
oh makin' love (un)to you

power booster, I'm talkin' to god and more
crank it up and above my head
smell my shit eatin grin on the skids of my world
six hundred sixty six miles per hour"

QOTSA's "Songs for the Deaf" is my ultimate cruising album. My dad would often play it when we were driving when I was younger. Great stuff.

Sorry, posting links is really annoying and difficult on a Kindle, but all of these can be heard on youtube:

Iggy/The Stooges - Shake Appeal
Ramones - Chainsaw
New York Dolls - Jet Boy
Marc and the Mambas - Empty Eyes (particularly good for buying coke and/or hookers)
Foetus - Ramrod
Saint Vitus - Saint Vitus
Crucifixion - Green Eyes

Plus loads more I will surely remember an hour from now...

Josh Homme was the guitar player in Kyuss, and after they split he started QOTSA. I believe the drummer on the last Kyuss album played on the first QOTSA album, as well.

I can't tell you how many fucking times I've listened to this song in my car, and I've yet to get tired of it. I actually don't even like that album much, but when it comes to cruising, it's perfect. Similar to Kyuss, I also listen to Black Pyramid a lot (however, I actually love that band): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95h9BISMTuc

Also, why isn't there much thrash on this thread? Most thrash is pretty appropriate for driving imo.

I mentioned in a previous post that for a while, when I went driving at night, I brought Megadeth's SFSGSW album. Any thrash you guys feel is appropriate would be appreciated.

Those Kyuss songs are good. Does anyone have any other songs that sound like that?

Amorphis - Tuonela album has to be one of my all time favourites out of albums that are on the archives (especially Morning Star from that album). Psychedelic prog rock is usually the best. Kingston Wall has a few brilliant cruising songs on their first and second albums.

Most thrash metal sounds good to me while driving because of the fast tempo and the particular sound of the guitars. My most listened thrash album while driving would be Exodus - Bonded by Blood: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=92562&p=2188886#p2188886

Also, most speed metal works well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZRdHF-oGi4
