I have gone 7 pages back into the forums and have not found a topic relating directly to vocals in general, so here goes.

I have recently posted in the thrash, heavy and prog threads about trying to find bands with paticular kind of vocals, the reason I have started this stand alone thread is hoping to get some outside opinions, eg, someone who is not into prog may not go into the prog thread but knows of some really good bands to suggest. So this thread is directed to vocals on particular. Even though I am very guitar orientated, vocals seem to be the make and break. I like varied styles including traditional heavy metal, thrash, prog, instumental and a little bit of core. But in all the bands in those genres that i like the vocalist tends to be the deciding factor. I'd like to thank all the users that have commented on my post in other threads but this is to hopefully reach a larger audience.

So here is my request for suggestions, I'm looking for vocals that are natural/clean sounding singing as appossed to growling/screaming, i can cope with a bit of screaming/growling but id like it to be something like 75 % singing and 25% other. I also prefer a deeper voice as opposed to your Iron Maiden/power metal vocals.

Favourite vocals: Black album onwards James Hetfield ( really like the vocals on garage onc disc 1)
Avenged sevenfold ( the singing side of waking the fallen onwards, things like verses of MIA)
Trivium ( shogun the song clean vocals, into hell we march)

Vocals like that???

Am looking forward to any suggestions.

honestly, I don't want to refresh my memory on dreadful 'core' stuff*, so I'm just going to work off the 'deeper clean vocal' idea...

first two make me think of Metallica, not that I'm a fan, probably just that it's as close to ordinary Heavy Metal as I venture.
Spectral - The Sound of a 1000 Swords
Einherjer - The Ballad of the Swords
Ivan Tzarevich - Fly, Soul…
Butterfly Temple - Smert'
Rimmersgard - Loneliness My Friend
Vintersorg - Astral and Arcane
Chur - Zagovir
Heidevolk - Een Geldersch Lied
Folkodia - The Malevolent
Nomans Land - In the Skin of a Bear
Svarga - Na Moem Beregu
Excelsis - The Warrior
and you'd already know this one, but what the hell...
Dark Tranquillity - Auctioned

*I just made the mistake of listening to that Sevenfold album, since I had it on hand.
I guess you were looking for something more girl rock oriented...
Anthrax - Safe Home
Alterbridge - Broken Wings

Thanks for the suggestions mate, also thanks for your opinion on music taste even though i didnt ask for it.
The music can be as heavy as you like, I'm just after vocals similar to what i described.

i think the vocals on ruinside's debut full length are pretty close to what you're after (the demos and ep's have different vocalists that don't fit your description as well)

first two tracks of that embedded player: http://ruinside.com/?p=music#
(proggy/melodic thrash)

Go listen to folk metal
Or progressive rock
Or Ghost Brigade
Or anything not considered extreme metal

The guy isn't exactly loved around these parts, but you might wanna try Warrel Dane's solo album, Praises to the War Machine, which consists of simple and catchy modern groove metal. Dane himself has a very dark, booming voice, and even though his delivery is pretty varied, just clean, deep bellows are the general rule for him. You might also want to try his main band, Nevermore.

You'd probably enjoy Amorphis, Folky Melodic Death metal with just the balance of deep singing and growls you're looking for:

Except the stuff you're referring to is not melodic death metal :P But that's what I would've suggested as well, especially Eclipse and Skyforger
