Looking for some gritty, violent, rap. Even though I'm a metal dude, I've always been into Geto Boys, C-Murder, Mr Criminal, Pastor Toy... and even goofier "horror core" like Brain Trauma. But that's all very old stuff. Being that this kind of music is basically the death metal of the hip hop scene, I thought maybe some of you are still aware of newer stuff in this same vein?

Preferably dead pan stuff, if it's too comedic or tongue in cheek is loses it's oomph. Darker the better. Muchos gracias.

For some classic, dark horrorcore, check out Jus Allah.
For some "evil" (more pseudo-evil than anything) and slightly unsettling hip-hop, check out Tyler, the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt.
And for the vacuum where Tyler and Earl were too scared to go, check out Dälek and Death Grips.

Not exactly sure if you are looking for the really dark and cold stuff. If so check out Lord Infamous. The lyrics tend to be very dark and violent about drug addictions, murders, suicides and such. He raps hard and cold with a good flow. He was involved with the 3-six mafia for a long time but the label kicked him out because he had too many run ins with the law.

Yes, all of these, for sure; some of my favs here. Haven't heard of Jus Allah or Earl, will check... I really dig that Jus Allah track.

I don't listen to him much at all, but maybe Necro. It's the themes that are dark, not necessarily the music always.

Good picks, been plowing through them on Spotify all day. I think Dalek is my favorite so far. Would dig being able to get instrumental versions of the songs - not that I dislike the rapping, it's just that I think the music stands really well on it's own - but that's probably a tall order.

Mobb Deep's the Infamous isn't only one of the best rap albums, but it's also quite dark. Not silly or gimmicky, but just pretty raw.

Brotha lynch hung's "season of the siccness" is what you want. His follow up album "loaded" is also what you want, but different (darker) beat wise. Also sicx (Brotha lynch hung's half brother) album "if these walls could talk" if you like "loaded" (it's basically loaded part 2). Be warned tho that sicx is in prison for child molestation charges so that may be a deal breaker for you. Still, loaded and if these walls could talk are some of the darkest rap albums ever made if that's your thing

I definitely +1 both the Mobb Deep and GZA albums mentioned. I'm also a big Dalek fan, I think I own almost all of their stuff. All great too.

Some others you may like:

Grave Diggaz: 6 feet deep

Redman: dare iz a darkside; muddy waters

Method Man: tical

Spice 1: anything from the early to mid 90s...not really a favorite of mine but you'd probably dig him

Esham: again, not really my thing but one of the first to do horror oriented rap in the early 90s

Boot Camp Clik stuff like Smif 'n Wessun, Black Moon, Heltah Skeltah, etc. would probably up your alley as well.

Btw, a lot of 90s East Coast hip-hop has a somewhat noir feel to it at times, BUT that might not be quite what you're looking for.

Definitely death grips. I've never really intently listened to their stuff. I have listened to the money store like 3 or 4 times though. Enough to say it's very enjoyable, and adds an element of rap I don't usually hear, ACTUAL MUSIC (I kid, I kid, no really tho). I think death grips is kind of gangster. I don't know...

I remember there being this band called necro that was really dark.

Um, no. It's about death and like, satan or something. I dunno. It's been like a year since I listened to them. Click on this sentence for the song sample. I don't really think it's very good, but it's dark, like the OP wants.

Yeah man, Necro is totally a baaaaand. I don't like rap, in any context, but it's kind of cool to know there's stuff out there that isn't so streamlined.

Necro is really bad. His brother on the other hand, Ill Bill, isn't too bad. Necro is to rap as slipknot is to metal, dark themed, gimmicky, and awful. Only people who listen to Necro also like ICP or don't listen to rap.

well, in his defense, he was referring to the dreadful mistake era where he combined crappy metal with his lispy raps.

if he had only heard Necro's earlier/better work, it would've been obvious that there wasn't a whole band of producers (guitarists, drummers, etc.) contributing under the name.

yea, much better songs, but pretty much middle-of-the-road hip-hop ('omg, street life is tough', 'I'm dumb and believe conspiracies', etc.)

Someone earlier mentioned Spice 1, but gave a pretty broad rec. The song "Born to Die" has a pretty eerie beat and is pretty dark and violent in its lyrics. It's nothing supernatural in the horrorcore vein, just a pretty violent account of shootings and such. I dont listen to a ton of gangsta rap, but this is up there with my favorites http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvFzDZb8ttE
