Hey guys

So, I've been listening to Hamferd a lot over the past few weeks, and I've come to admire the mix of growls and quasi-operatic vocals. It almost sounds like someone mixed Scald and My Dying Bride in the same melting pot! I really like that mix, and as such I was wondering if more bands do this kind of thing? From Lasse Pyykko growls to folksy epic doom pipes? Anything remotely similar?!

^Doom metal bands tend to have one or the other, and nothing is really coming to mind of a band that does both often enough to show you. But, the good news is that you introduced me to this awesome band. :-D

Precisely! Which is why I'm enjoying Hamferd so much, and at the same time having so much trouble in finding something remotely similar.

androdion, check out Kuolemanlaakso. The cleans aren't really operatic, but it's a good mix of two styles.

So, Kuolemanlaakso then.

I've listened to most of Tulijoutsen on Bandcamp, and to be honest it just couldn't get into it. It has a very different style than Hamferd, a bit more plodding and repetitive, and Mikko isn't exactly my first pick for "best vocalist eva", whereas Jón Aldará can at least audition for the part. Sarcasm aside though, I can't see many (or any) similarities between both bands.

How about this... Are there any death/doom bands with a Nordic folk edge out there?

: / I guess they are more in the Celtic Frost side of things. I like them, though.

They've got this weird vibe going on, at points quasi-psychedelic, that is really unusual. It's not bad, it just isn't what I was expecting. ;)

I don't dislike Mikko per se though, I do have his albums with Barren Earth, but I think he's pretty much run-of-the-mill when it comes to his vocal performance. You know, Hamferd has this epic flair that I fail to hear in most death/doom bands, and that's more of what I'm searching for. Picky mofo am I not?!

Back to the drawing board. If I find something else, I'll let you know. Something about those Faroese bands, though, hard to match.

Do you like Void of Silence? Their music doesn't seem very nordic I guess, but they have epic vocals (dude from Primordial) and occasionally harsh vocals mixed together. They're more similar to funeral doom and atmospheric music than Hamferd, but maybe it's something.

The atmosphere isn't entirely dissimilar from Hamferd's, at points, but the bulk of the songs does tend to go into different places. The dynamics are different (i.e. slower, more plodding, less riffy) and to be honest Alan's voice doesn't seduce me. There's a not so subtle Dead Can Dance influence in the band's sound I suppose, which is nice and all but also doesn't do much for me.

Anyway, it was a fair shot. Thanks! ;)

This Temple of Void album has been in regular rotation for me. Really solid death/doom that should please Runemagick fans especially. Huge, vaguely Bolt Throwerian death metally grooves with some vaguely psychedelic touches in the leads, really catchy riffs and melodies, monstrous vocals and songwriting and an overall sound that seems to be that of a well-seasoned veteran band rather than a debut.

Draconian's "Arcane Rain Fell" is one of the better gothic/doom metal albums in my opinion. The album opens with the sounds of rain and thunder followed by the opening guitar chords. The songwriting is top-shelf on this album, writing long songs that flow without filler is no problem for these artists. Vocals are clean male/female and perfect death metal style angry growls. The production is clean and all the instruments, especially the base make themselves known. Harmony is the fundamental principle on display here, all the instruments fit together so well and nothing overpowers anything else.

Be forewarned, this is an emotionally crushing album. Crushing in the way that only doom metal can crush you.

Get doomed...

Disembowelment isn't even funeral doom. They are labeled as doom/death here and I can't really dispute that. But I perceive them as real slow death metal. They don't have the depressive atmosphere of funeral doom. They always had a rotten and ugly atmosphere like death metal.

"A Burial at Ornans" is vaguely funeral doom-ish and "Cerulian etc." even more so, but all in all they're a death/doom band to me.

That's a good one, though the two full-lengths they made after that are even better IMO. Those are two of my favorite albums ever.

Kudos on the Paramæcium. :) Have you listened to Within The Ancient Forest? I think most folks tend to agree that Within... is their masterpiece. A Time To Mourn is very solid too, though I could never get into Echoes From The Ground that much.

Be it aggressive death/doom or melodic acoustic stuff, My Silent Wake is a band that can do no wrong. For anyone who isn't familiar with them, I highly recommend them!

This is probably pushing my luck, but I am looking for some more bands like Acid Witch and Hooded Menace. A band like Asphyx is great and all, but I like the cheese factor mixed in with groovy parts and melodic parts that those two share minus the more straightforward death metal. Both bands know how to give a good hook and a strong aesthetic.
Thanks!

Luckily there aren't many bands like that. Runemagick consists entirely of cheese factor and nothing else, but I figure you know them already.

I figure Rigor Sardonicous is the only band there is that sounds like goregrind doom? Noktorn's project doesn't count.

Really want more of that kind of sound.

I just started getting into funeral doom and I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for funeral doom that is heavily influenced by black metal. Something similar to "it took the night to believe" by Sunn 0))) (even though that's drone) would be nice. Thank you

The first few seconds of that track..Immense. That warped black-ish riff.

Try some torture doom like Wormphlegm perhaps? Always thought there was a healthy dose of black metal in those bands.

And then of course there is the legendary Mordor from Switzerland. Likely not the type of black metal influence you are looking for, but such an amazingly unique sound.

Off the top of my head, there're a few bands that qualify:

Funeralium, Reliquary, Trees, Black Bile... and Yhdarl.

That's what got me into slower metal in the first place. Its amazing what Sunn 0)) can do with just guitars on some songs!

I listened to a few of those they were all good recommendations. My favorites were Funeralium and Yhdarl. I listened to the Ave Maria full length by Yhdarl and I really liked the ambient parts in it. It went pretty well with the metal and I could hear a lot of black metal influence in the guitar and even, during some parts, the vocals.

I listened to a demo by Wormphlegm and they are exactly what I was hoping to find. Mordor was different but still interesting and I will look into them more. I listened to some of the Csejthe demo. Do you recommend any particular work by them?

I own the full length Gudforladt by Nortt and I enjoy it but I would prefer longer song lengths. I will give the other recommendations a listen.

Christianmangle, also try the Norwegian Hjarnidaudi for something you might find similar to that Sunn O))) track. It's funeral/drone/doom by a black metal guy.

Maybe too obvious but have you ever listened to Elysian Blaze? By far the most powerful black metal/funeral doom hybrid I've heard.

I am looking for some bands/albums which has a similar feel as in Meshuggah's Behind the Sun. Or Demiurge. There's a lot of doom/drone elements going on in these songs and almost the entirety of the album Koloss. I am trying to find out bands which have a similar kind of feel. No, I am not looking for "djent" shit, that's the tone. I am looking at similar doom chord selection as used by Meshuggah. Hope I was able to explain it properly.

Some examples of these Meshuggah songs with the doom feel:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1nGplcVZTQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xD-KJSjIxw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lklU89L8sXs

(And almost the whole Koloss album)
